• refer our readers to the annual statement of
f ? tlie .Kina Insurance Company, of Hartford,
i will be found in another column. This success-
■,i institution was incorporated by the Legislature of
, !,neciicut in It'D.*, with a perpetual charter. Its
itit.il is *5lM),000, and its accumulations exceed
v.i iiii: more, making its entire assets ever ^>300,-
. ’ivf.-itod as detailed in the statement referred to
7 'e re.>iults indicate that during the period of nearly
riv yeiu-s since its or^aniiation, (without a single
of its chief officer,) its business has been cou-
!e 1 with judgment and prudence. It has been
' l'.\r successful in an eminent degree, discharging,
»i‘ :ire informed, all its obligations by the payment
• ;»t> lut tfn million dollart for losses, without asking a
• ^ delay in any instance. It has had but little lit-
;h:i;'U, notwithstanding the immense number of trans-
.'• >'ns made. In order to attain as much certainty as
>sible in such a business as insurance, it has been
r practice of the Company, for several years, at
;re:it labor, carefully to classify and arrange their
-Ks into about fifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain
■ne ;imount insured on each class, the amount of pre-
._:ums received thereon, and the amount of losses up-
’! each. This classitication, extending over a long
; id.and covering property to a very large amount,fur-
'be.' reliable data, and presents a sound, substantial
. s it actual experience, upon which to conduct its
uriness. Insurance is not a matter of luck or chance,
s; many suppose; its hazards are ascertainable, and
;; principles capable of being reduced to a system, the
■iMctical working and results of which are as certain
tiiiit of any other business. The jEtna Company,
hv a ihering rigidly to its system, and placing its busi-
ae> uprn a healthy basis, has obtained the contidence
’ the community to an extent surpassed by no other
' aipany in the U. States, and has increased its buai-
t,e-' nnd its income from year to year with a steady
;r iwth One great source of its security is the wide
; itri'nutiou of its risks—a pelicy which it pursues
« '!i great strictness—limiting the amount to be cov-
>*reJ in each locality. By this course it has passed,
« i; comparative impunity, through some of the most
'weepiiig and destructive fires, which have swallowed up
lucr i;,.nipanie8 less cautious in their business. It is
i -ystem like this, based upon experience, which gives
■^;^.lity and soundness to a company, and to the as-
>arf 1 contidence and security.—Baltimort Patriot.
