NUMBER 3 is a new and revised edition of the North
Carolina Reader, first published in 1851. Numbers
1 and 2 just issued, complete the series, which i>, as u
whole, cheaper than any other scries of Readers in the
United States, and as complete.
The Editor (Prof. Hubbard) in his Preface to Num
ber 1 deems it proper to allule to a few of tlie peculiar
advantages aimed at by the Suj)erinu-ndeiit of I'oinraon
Schools while making efforts to liave thiis work com
pleted. These are, >
1. The encouragement of a foh'itj nf j mdfnce, and
the enlistment of popular aeniiniont in beh:ilf of the State
and its institutions. It was not thougUt iinportaut, how
ever, to have more than one number of the Hea'ler of
merely a local interest.
2. To remedy the eril everyichtr romplamed of in com
mon schoolt, of a perpetual rhanye in n 'i in J.s; an expen
sive habit, and one which injures tlie Schools by pre
venting the children from being -classified. A series ■>f
home Readers, it was supposed, would bt. certaijily used,
and this great evil thus avoided.
3. Economy, the popular system of Readers be'ing too
long and being made so often merely tr. add to the profits
of authors and publishers.
This series is to consist of fewer numbers than those
generally used, and it is believed that t aesc nuiiibirs e."
sufficient, while if the sy.stem were universally used in
the State, the sum saved* to parents an.l children would
amount to several thousand dollars urinnnlly.
4. To put in the hand' of chihS -tn ,-q t' read cori-
pofitions sufrriently familiar bu> «■ vj n-~ -r - jp
