THE MEW^ EDITiOAS
OF THE
Supreme Court Reportis*
The Publishers, conceiving that their New Editions,
with Judge Battle's Notes, of some of the volumes
of Reports which had gone out of print, have not sufii-
«iently attracted the attention of the Profession, have
been liappy to receive the following voluntary tribute
to their merits, from a distinguished Lawyer: —
Ralkiuh, July 27, 1859.
Messrs. E. J. Halk & Sox:—Gkstlk.men:—I confess.
I did not have an opportunity, until a week or two
siuce, to examine your re-publication of the first \ ol.
}f Dev. & Bat. Eq. Rep., aud also the first Vol. of tlie
same Reporters’ of the Law decisions of the Supreme
Court. It is no compliment, either to you or Judye
Battle, to say, as an humble member of the profession.
I thank you for this most valuable addition to the Ju
dicial treasure of the State. To the members of the
legal profession the Notes of Judge B. are of great
value, and 1 do most sincerely hope you will receive
from the profession generally that euuouragement and
patronage which you deserve.
I am, gentlemen, yours,
most truly and respTlly,
H. W. MILLER.
The Publishers have now in press, about two-thirds
printed, the 2d Vol. of Devereui & Battle's Equity,

FOIKTH AMEKICAN EDITION,
BY ISAAC EDWARDS,
Counsellor at Law.
In three large volumes.
With COWEN & HILL’S Notes, and with additional
Notes and References to the English and .Vuierican
cases to the present time, including those added to the
last edition by J. -Marsden Van Cott.
The unequalled work of Mr. Phillips on the Law of
Evidence has long been acknowledged.
This edition has undergone a thorough revision by
Mr. Edwards, and has received an immense amount of
labor, and is now as nearly perfect as can be made.
Tlie American labor and talent bestowed upon the
work are not less than that derived from the English
source. The immortal notes of Messrs. Cowen & Hill,
together with those of Mr. Van Cott, have been care
fully preserved; aud instead of being put in a volume by
themselves, as formerly, they are now placed below tiie I
text—a disposition of them which will very much faci- ;
litate reference. The entire note and text are arranged ,
iu three conijuict volumes, with a table of cases, and an '
extremely full iudex to each. Mr. Edwards has care- I
fully noted any distinctions tiiat ir.ty exist between the |
English and American law, and has added all the late
American decisions.
Several copies of tliis valuable work j ist received aud

V] UMBER 3 is a new aud revised edition of the North
Carolina Reader, first published in I80I. Numbers
1 and 2 just issued, complete tJie series, which i.s, us a
whole, cheaper than any other .series of Readers in the
United States, and as complete.
Tiie Editor (Prof. Hubbard) in his Preface to Num
ber 1 deems it proper to alliule to a few of the peculiar
advantages aimed at by the Superintendent of Common
Schools while making efforts to have this work com
pleted. These are,
1. The encuuniyement of a feeling of self-dependence, and
the enlistment of popular sentiment in behalf of the State
and its institutions. It was not thottght important, how
ever, to have more than one number of tiie Reader of
merely a local interest.
2. To remedy the evil everywhere comphtinrd rf in com
mon tchools, of a perpetual chanye in text bookx; an expen
sive habit, and one which injures the Sctiools by pre
venting the children from being classified. .V series of
home Readers, it was su[iposed, would be certainly used,
and this great evil thus avoided.
8. Econumy, the popular system of Headers being too
long and being made so often merely to add to the profits
of authors and publishers.
This series is to consist of fewer numt>ers than those
generally used, and it is believed that these numbers are
sufficient, while if the systeni were universally used id
the State, the sum saved to parents aud children woi In
amount to several thousand dollars annually.
4. To put in the handf of children learning to read com-
pofitionn atiffieiently familiar hut not of the character called
childish compositions, containing, in lessons easy enough
for all ages, correct specimens ot style, interesting in
matter, and inculcating proper morals, and religious in
struction.
The prices are, for No. 1, 25 cents; No. 2, 37J cents
and No. 3, 76 cents. A liberal deduction from these
prices to Merohants and School Teachers.

F^re Insurance.
WE refer our readers to the annual statement of tli«
.£tna Insurance Company, of Hartford. This suc
cessful institution was incorporated by the Legislature of
Connecticut in 1819, with a perpetual charter. It®
capital is $50U,000, and its accumulations exceed jSH' iO.-
000 more, making its entire assets over §1,:?OU,UOU, in
vested as detailed in the statement referred to. These
results indicate that during the period of nearly forty
years since its organization, (without a single change of
its chief officer,) its business has been conducted with
judgiuent and prudence. It has been thus far success
ful in an eminent degree, discharging, as we are in
formed, all its obligations by the payment of about tt-n
million dollars for losses, without asking a day's delay in
any instance. It has had but little litigation, notwith
standing the immense number of transactions made. In
order to attain as much certainty as possible in such a
business as insurance, it has been the practice of the
Company, for several years, at great labor, carefully to
classify and arrange their risks into about fifty distinct
classes, so as to ascertain the amount insured ou each
class, the amount of premiums received thereon, and the
amount of losses upon each. This classification, extend
ing over a long period, and covering property to a very
large amount, furnishes reliable data, and presents a
sound, substantial basis of actual experience, upim which
to conduct its business. Insurance is not a matter of
luck or chance, as many suppose; its hazards are ascer
tainable, and its principles capable of being reduced to
a system, the practical working and results of whioh are
as certain as that of any otner business. The .ttaa
Company, by adhering rigidly to its system, and placing
its business upon a healthy basis, has obtained the coii
fidence of the community to an extent surpassei by 110
other Company iu the U. Slates, and has increased its
business and its income from year to year with a steady
growth. One great source of its security is tlic wide
distribution of its risks—a policy which it pursues with
great strictness—limiting tiie amount to be cuvered in
each locality. By this cour.se it ham passed, with om-
parative impunity, tlirough some of the most sweeping
and destructive tires, which have swallowed up otiier
companies less cautious in their liusiness. It is a .system
like this, based upon experience, which gives stabiliiy
and soundness to a company, and to the assured con
fidence and security.—Baltimore Patriot.
