Counsellor at Law.
In three large volumes.
With COWEN & HILL’S Notes, and with additional
Notes and References to the English and American '
cases to the present time, including those added to the :
last edition by J. Marsden Van Colt.
The unequalled work of Mr. Phillips on *the Law of
Evidence has long been acknowledged. |
This edition has undergone a thorough revision by ^
.Mr. Edwards, and has received an immense amount of '
labor, and is now as nearly perfect as can be made.
The American labor and talent bestowed upon the ]
work are not less than that derived from the English {
source. The immortal notes of Messrs. Coven At Hill, j
together with those of Mr. Van Coil, have been care- j
fully preserved; and instead of being put in a volume by
themselves, as formerly, they are now placed below the
text—a disposition of them which will very much faci
litate reference. The entire note and text are arranged
in three compjict volumes, with a table of cases, aud an
extremely full index to each. Mr. Edwards has care-
full}- noted any distinctions that tray exist between the
English and American law, and has added all the late
American decisions.

Supreme Court Reports*
The Publishers, conceiving that their New Editions,
with Judge Battle’s Notes, of some of the volumes
of Reports which had gone out of print, have not sufii-
oiently attracted the attention of the Profession, have
been happy to receive the following voluntary tribute
to their merits, from a distinguished Lawyer:
Raleigh. July 27, 1850.
Mbssrs. E. J. Halk & Son:—Gentlemen:—I confess,
I did not have an opportunity, until a week or two
since, to examine your re-publication of the first V ol.
)f Dev. & Bat. Eq. Rep., and also tLe first V^ol. of the
same Reporters’ of the Law decisions of the Supreme
Court. It is no compliment, either to you or Judg*
BattU, to say, as an humble member of the profossioa
I thank you for this most valuable addition to the Ju
dicial treasure of the State. To the inoiubsrb of the
legal profession the Notes of Judge B. are of greal
value, and I do most sincerely hope you will receive
from the profession generally that enoouragenn»nt and
patronage which you deserve.
I am, gentleman, yours,
most truly and resp’f’lly,
H. W. MILLER.
The Publishers have now in press, about two-thirds
printed, the 2d Vol. of Devereux & Battle’s Equity,
with Judge Battle's valuable Notes, and with many
typographical errors corrected. Orders solicited.

«;AS FITTIl^GS ANDnXTURES.~
The subscribers will be prepared by the middle of
August, to supply every description of Buildings.—
Dwellings, Stores, Factories. &c.—with all the neces
sary FIXTURES, for the introduction of GAS.
As we are constantly engaged in the business of build
ing Gas Works in this and other States, we of course
can afford to bring on a large stock and sell on more
reasonable terms than others. Our stock will include
Chandeliers. Pendents, Brackets, Glass, &c.
As we have leased the works for five years, it will be
to the advantage of those requiring such fixtures to get
them of us, since upon us will fall the care of them,
keeping them in repair, &c. For this purpose it is
both our interest and pleasure to emply none but the
best Gas Fitters.
In our absence for a few weeks, all who wish to have
the Pif>es introduced into their buildings, will please
leave their names with Mr. W. N. Tillinghast, who will
give all necessary information on the subject. It is
desirable to know as early as possible, so that the Fix
tures may be introduced at the same time with the con
struction of the works, aud thus all saay light up simul
taneously.

VI UMBER 3 is a new aud revised edition of the North
Carolina Reader, first published in 1851. Numbeis
1 and 2 just issued, complete the series, which is, as a i
whole, cheaper than any other series of Readers in the i
United States, and as complete. |
The Editor (Prof. Hubbard) in his Preface to Num
ber I deems it proper to allude to a few of the peculiar i
advantages aimed at by the Superintendent of Common
Schools while making efforts to have this work com- ^
pleted. These are,
1. The encouragement of a feeling of sel f-drpendtnce, and |
the enlistuient *if popular sentiment iu behalf of the Stale ;
and its institutions. It was not thought important, how- j
ever, to have more than one number of the Reader of
merely a local interest.
2. To remedy the evil everywhere complained of in com
mon xchoola, of a perpetual change in text bookt; an expen
sive habit, and one which injures the School.s by pre
venting the children from being cl.issified. .V series of
home Readers, it was supposed, would be certainly used,
and this great evil thus avoided.
8. Kconmny, the popular system of Renders being too
long and being made so often merely to add to the profits
of authors and publishers.
This series is to consist of fewer numbers than those
generally used, and it is believed that these numbers are
sufficient, while if the system were universally used id
the State, the sum saved to parents and children wouln
amount to several thousand dollars annually. |
4. To put in the hands of children learning to read com- i
poiition* suffieientli/ familiar hut not of the character called 1
ehilditk compontions, containing, in lessons easy enough I
for all ages, correct specimens of style, interesting in j
matter, and inculcating proper morals, and religious in- ‘
struction. i
The prices are, for No. 1, 25 cents; No. 2. 37i cents |
and No. 3, 75 cents. A liberal deduction from these
pricea to Merobants aud School Teachers.

JPtt*e Insuranccm
WE refer our readers to the annual statement of lh«»
iEina Insurance Company, of Hartford. This suc
cessful institution was incorporated bj’ the Legislature of
Connecticut in 1819, with a perpetual charter. It«
capital is §500,000, and its accumulations exceed ?800.-
000 more, making its entire assets over Sl.HfH),00.>. in
vested as detailed iu the statement referred to. These
results indicate that during the period of nearly forty
years s’nce its organization, (without a single change of
its chief officer,) its business has been conducted with
judgment and prudence. It has been thus far success
ful in an eminent degree, discharging, as we are in
formed, all its obligations by the payment of about ten
million dollar! for losses, without asking a day’s delay iu
any instance. It has had but little litigation, notwith
standing the immense number of transactions made. In
order to attain as much certainty as possible in such a
business as insurance, it has been the practice of the
Company, for several years, at greal labor, carefully to
classify and arrange their risks into about fifty distinct
classes, so as to ascertain the amount insured on each
class, the amount of premiums received thereon, and the
amount of losses upon each. This classification, extend
ing over a long period, and covering property to a very
large amount, furnishes reliable data, and presents a
sound, substantial basis of actual experience, upon which
to conduct its business. Insurance is not a matter of
lack or chance, as many suppose; its hazards are asccr-
tainable, and its principles capable of being reduced tn
a system, the practical working and results of which are
as certain as that ol' any other business. The .£ina
Company, by adhering rigidly to its system, aud placing
its business upon a healthy basis, has obtained the con
fidence of the community lo an extent surpassed by no
other Company in the U. States, and has increased it**
business and its income from year to year with a steady
growth. One great source of its security is tin- wide
distribution of its risks—a policy which it pursues wiin
g»-eat strictness—limiting the amount to be covereil in
each locality. By this course it has pa.«sed, with com
parative impunity, through some of the most sweeping
and desliuctive fires, which have swallowed up oilier
Cumpanies less cautious in their business. It is a >y.-i!eui
like this, based upon experience, which gives stabiiisy
and soundness to a company, and to the assured cmi-
fidence and securitj’.—Baltimore J'atriot.
