^pUE Plantation on Cape Fear River, known as the
1 Col. Aslie place. Tliese lands are without doubt the
most valuable on the Cilice Fear. They are located nine
miles above Fayetteville, on the East side of the Cap«
Fear, contain 702 acres, most admirably adapted to the
cultivation of cotton, corn, oats and wheat. Men of
acknowledged judgment say it will average 80 lo 50
bushels of corn to the acre; about 200 acres are cleared,
and it will produce 100 bales of cotton, besides provi

NON-EXISTENCE OF FROST
Some months since, says the Asheville Advo
cate, a young friend in conversation with us gav®
his reasons for the existence of a belt of land on
Tryon Mountain free of frost—of which so much
has been said. They are the best we have ever
heard, and at our request he has written them out;
“While in Polk county last Fall, I was inform
ed by several persons of the existence of a belt of
land upon the Tryon and White Oak Mountains
which is rarely visited by frost. If any explana
tion has ever been given of this phenomenon I
am not aware of it. The following one was sug
gested to my mind after an examination of the
I locality.
I “Tryon and W^hite Oak are names given to
: that portion of the Saluda Chain included be-
i tween Howard’s Gap and Thompson’s Gap—a
; distance of about five miles. The mountain here
is the dividing ridge between Green and Paco-
j let Rivers, and from its superior height over-
; looks all the surrounding country. Green River
I lies at its base upon the Northern side, and Pa-
colet occupies the valley upon the southern side;
. the mountain bearing a North-easterly direction,
i The belt of no frost is on the South side. Its
' exact limits were not pointed out to me, but it is
several hundred feet lower than the crest of the
do., Gingham do., Lace Points, Shawls and
Mantillas in profusion, Ribbons, Hosiery
and Gloves, Spool Cotton, Hats and Caps,
Boots and Shoes.
All of which will be offered very low. Call and ex
amine; no charge for looking. J. K. KY^LE.

1 J T Cl 1- _..i nearly the whole length of the mountain; main-
, taining about the same elevation.
' “Points of land considerably elevated above the
general level of a country, receive less dew and
consequently less frost, for the reason that the air
around them contains less moisture than that in
the plain below; is more exposed to winds, which,
; mixing the different strata together, prevent the
reduction of temperature necessary for the for-
, mation of dew; and because when undisturbed by
winds, it sinks down before reaching the dew
point, to take the place of the air which has be-
; come lighter from condensation of its moisture. A
very gentle breeze is favorable to the deposit of
dew.
■ “Tryon Mt., from its isolated position, might for
i these reasons be loft without dew upon all its
sides from the top as far down as the lower limit
of the Belt. But while the Pacolet Valley is
very broad and contains much clearcd land, the
Green River Valley is narrow, less cultivated,
less exposed to the sun, and bounded on the
North by the Blue Ridge. The difference in
condition of the two valleys determines a current
of cold air from Green River to Pacolet across
the top of Tryon; which mingles with, and brings

top which otherwise would have deposited their
moisture lower down. The North side of the
mountain, facing the direction from which the
current conies is entirely covered with dew. The
current on reaching the south side sinks down,
bringing to the dewpoint the strata it mingles
with. But before reaching the line at which,
under other circumstances the deposit or dew
would have commenced, these strata, rendered
lighter by their loss of moisture than the air im
mediately below them, move off over the Pacolet
valley. Thus a na row strip is left without any
dew, and if the night be sufficiently cold the
morning presents to view a whole country whiten
ed with frost save this dark bolt along the moun

E refer our readers to the advertisement of
Messrs. CHURCH & DUPONT, No. 400 Broad
way. New York. The ‘Blood Food,’ is one of the great
est medicines of the age, and is rapidly driving out of
the market all the quack nostrums of modern times. Its
eflicacy is so great, and its superiority so justly acknow
ledged, that it is found difficult to supply the immense
and increasing demand for the article. Dr. Eaton's
celebrated ‘Infantile Cordial,’ is a medicine prepared by
a regular physician of eminence in his profe-^sion. and
one who lias devoted his life to the peculiar phases of
Infantile diseases. It is no humbug, but a medicine
which commends itself to those only who can appreciate
it.”—Ap'ilachichla, Flor. Times.
