CARTER & SONS Phenomenon at Sea.—Capt. Robert A, S. HAVE put up and permanently located the best BOOT , Pittman, of the ship Jas. Guthrie, has 8ent th© and SHOE MANUFACTORY' in N. C., to which following interesting extract giving the particu lars of an immense water-spout which he saw on his outward passage. His journal says: “September 1, 1859, lat. 40 31, long. 59 34 W., at 2 P. M., took strong breeze from the south east, which put us under double-reefed top sails, with the mercurial column at 30-1; at 5 P M. it ran down to 26,5; the wind increasing, close reefed, and furled all light sails and courses. Ob served in the southwest a dark, cumbrous looking cloud, which approached the ship with amazing rapidity, while the wind continued to increase, veering to the opposite quarter. When the cloud was within about three miles of the ship the wind suddenly fell to a dead calm, aud the phenomenon I presented a terrific appearance. The cloud now j assumed the form of an inverted coue, and gradu- 1 ally descended towards the sea, which alsQ formed ! itself into a lofty peak, until the two points met, ■ completing a water-.spout of gigantic dimensions. ] Around the mountain of water a whirlwind ini- I mediately commenced, tearing and scattering the ^ sea in every direction, detaching and carrying in j its course large masses of clouds. The appearance I was like a vast horizontal wheel, turning around j this mountain of water, with the spout for its centre, with an amazing velocity; and, as the sky near the horizon w:is perfectly clear, the revolutions of this wonderful wind and water wheel were distinctly visible, making its revolutions com plete in twenty-si.^ seconds, and with a regularity and precision that were truly astonishing. This continued for about twenty minute.^!, during which time the connexion of the clouds with the sea was several times broken off, without reducing the altitude of the sea mountain, but immediately be came reunited, until finally it terminated with a spla.sh, agitating the ship and passing over her, ending in torrents of rain. Very soon the sky became beautifully clear, the wind set in fresh from the southwest, and all nature, as well as myself, seemed rejoiced at the destruction of so formidable a machine." BoBnels! Finally one of ’em sez, “Don’t make fun of the unfortunate; he’s hardly got over bein’ blowed up yet. Let’s make a puss for him.” Then they all throwed in and made up five dollars. As the spokesman handed me tlie change, he axed me— “ W har did you find yourself after the explosion?” “In a fiatboat,” sez 1. “How far from the Franklin?” sez he. “Why I never seen her, but as nigh as I can guess, it must have been from what they tell me, nigh on to three hundred and seventy-five miles!’' You oughter see that gang scatter." Elajyement Extraordinary—A Father Outwit- ti'd bi/ his iHon.—The Wheeling Intelligencer is responsible for the following; We noticed a few mornings ago, the elope ment of a young couple from Baruesville, Ohio, who came here from the Metcalf House, and went to West Alexander in a hurry, and got mar ried. It seems that the father of the young man, who lives near Barnesville, had been courting his present daughter-in-law for some time, and recently engaged himself to her. Having great confidence in the judgment of his son, he con cluded to send him down in the country where the young lady resided, to take a look at her be fore the solemnization of the marriage contract. The son went down, and returning, announced liimself a.s highly pleased with the young woman, I Itut counseled a short delay, lie wanted time to ! learn more ot his “mother-in-law,” and continued j to visit her, aj)parently for that purpose. The I old man’s surprise, when he found that his sou i had eloped with the girl, and victimized his (the j son’s) confiding parent may be imagined. j The last will of a queer old miser who has just 1 died is much talked of at \ ienna. He cut oft all j his nearest relatives, and made a very distant one, ' an extremely handsome young girl, sole heiress i of his considerable property. So far there is no- ! thing extraordinary; but there is a condition add- ; ed to it. The testator wa.s a hunchback, and ! had a club foot, which defects probably had ob- i structed many attempts of liis to marry. He has made it, therefore, u condition sine qua non, that the heiress is to get ths property only when she ! marries a man shaped as he was. She is, besides, I to live in a convent three months in each year to ! j)ray for his sotfl. The hcirs-at-law have attacked this will, on the plea that when it was made the testator must have been mad. Made heretofore, Plow.s.
