VALUABLE FAR>IL\(; LAND TOR SALE.
The Plantation on Cape Fear River, known as the
Col. Ashe place. These lauds are without doubt the
most valuable on the Cape Fear. They are located nine
miles above Fayetteville, on the East aide of the Cape
Fear, contain 702 acres, most admirably adapted to the
cultivation of cotton, corn, oats and wheat. Men of
acknowledged judgment say it will average SO to 50
bushels of corn to the acre; about 200 acres are cleared,
and it will produce 100 bales of cotton, besides provi
sions for the force.
The uncleared land cannot be surp-assed any where,
and will yield 50 to 80 bushels of corn to the acre, and
as much Cotton as any in this country; situated within
9 miles of the best market in the State, with Steamboat
navigation to either Fayetteville or Wilmington; with
richness of soil seldom equalled—never surpassed, makes
the most VALUABLE and DESIRABLE FARM in the
State.
In connection with the abova, 1 offer 208 acres of
L.\ND on West side of Cape Fear, known as the “White
Lands,” just opposite the above. I will sell the above
lauds on the most favorable terms; a bargain may be
had. If not disposed of sooner, tht«y will be sold at
AUCTION, at the Market House in Fayetteville, on
May 8tl». 1800. As to quality of Land, I refer to Col.
Waddill, Messrs. John Waddill, A. \. McKethan, David
Murphy and Thomas S. Lutterloh.

The Proceu of Raising Entire Blocks oj
Buildings.—Probably the greatest mechanical
feat on record is the raising ot an entire block of
buildings, weighing 35,000 tons, and presenting
a front of 320 feet, which has nearly or quite
been aecomplished at Chicago. The Chicago pa
pers say the proccss of raising is by the screw,
six thousand of which, three inches in diameter,
and of ^Hhree-eighths thread,” six hundred work
men have been employed, each man in charge of
from eight to ten screws. A complete system of
signals was kept in operation, and by these the
workmen pa.ssed, each through his series, giving
each screw one-quarter turn, then returning to
repeat the same. Five days labor saw the im
mense weight rise through foui feet and eight
inches to where it now stands, on temporary sup
ports, rapidly being replaced by permanent foun
dations.
The block compriees thirteen first-class stores
and a large double marble structure, the Marine
Bank building. Its subdivisions are a five-story
marble front block of three stores, a four-story
block of three stores, a second four-story block of
three stores, and a five-story block of four stores,
at the corner of Clark street—these all present
ing an unbroken front, in the heart of our city,
and filled with occupants. It presents some of
the best retail establishments in the city, and
some of the heaviest stocks of d’’ugs, dry goods,
&c. Its upper stories are full of offices, and con
tain millinery rooms, printing establishments,
binderies, &c.; and yet, so admirably has the work
been conducted, the ceaseless daily tide of pedes
trians has not been impeded, but rather increased,
from the novelty of the sitiht; and the merchantjj
and others even speak of an improved trade,
though they will welcome the completion of the
work none the less. The block has been raised
four feet eight inches, the required height, in five
days, ending with Friday last, and the masons are
now busy putting in the permanent supports. I he
entire work will occupy about four weeks. The
total cost of this stupendous work is only $17,000.
Japanese Society and Government.—Though
the Japanese are unblushingly Hcentiou.s, they have
redeeming characteristics that elevate them high
in the scale of civilized beings. An extraordinary
degree of amiability marks their intercourse be
tween one another. They are truly courteous
and kind to strangers and to one another. We
never heard them scold one another; never saw
them fight. Their countenances seemed strangers
to frowns; and good-humored smiles constantly
irradiated them. They hold the relationship of
marriage in the highest estimation. And it is
said by those who have had an opportunity to
search the records, that infidelity on the part of
married women is a crime unknown among them.
Wives and daughters enjoy the liberty of sharing
with their husbands, fathers, and brothers all their
innocent recreations, and are not ignominiously
housed as are the women of most Eastern nations.
The science of Government must be better
understood by them than by other nations, since
it succeeds to a charm in preserving perfect order
and harmony. Though a despotism, it is law
that is the despot, and to its mandates the Em
perors themselves are as amenable as the lowest
orders.—Japan Letter.
Population of Rome.—A census of the popu
lation of Rome has just been completed, from
which it appears that the total of the inhabitants
is 180,357—a figure at which this petrified or
stereotyped city has remained for the last two
hundred and fifty years, without any symptom of
that progressive development which has enlarged,
enriched, and enlightened every other European
capital. In the muster-roll there are 34 bishops,
1,331 secular priests, 2,404 monks, 1,872 friars,
2,700 nuns, and 850 seminary students. Last year
the figure was 179,952, but the slight increase is
made up by counting this year 854 “heretics,
Turks, infidels, ^nd Jews,” who are permitted
to live outside the Ghetto, and were never in
cluded before in the census. There is no mention
of what the Ghetto it^ielf holds, but it is supposed
to lodge about five thousand children of Israel.

A Dear Whistle.—On Saturday morning, Lucian
Landrum’s little son had a cent given to him, and,
straightway he went to Wm. Mantel’s store, on
Duval street, and purchased a tin whistle. The
toy proved too weak for the little fellow’s lungs,
and soon ceased to “discourse music.” It was
taken back to Mantel with the request to give a
better one in exchange for it. He declined to do
so, and when Mr. L’s servant, who accompanied
the boy, persisted in the demand for an exchange,
M. directed her to go to the infernal regions.
The negro told this to her mistress, and Mrs. L.
called upon Mantel to demand an explanation of
the insult. He denied having sent an insulting
message to Mrs. L. and requested her to leave
his ptore. She did so, and complained lo her
husband, who arming himself with a bowie knife,
went to M’s store, and charged him with having
thrown his boy into the street, and insulted his
wife. Mantel denied the charge, and requested
Landrum to leave. He refused to go, and Mantel
thereupon essayed to put him out. A scufHe
ensued, in the coursc of which J.iandrum drew
his knife, and Mantel in trying to protect hi:n-
self, by grasping the blade or otherwise, received
a gash across the fingers of his left hand, lisn-
drum was finally expelled, somewhat worsted
himself, and walked off. Mantel obtained a pro-
ce.ss against Landrum, and the case was investi
gated before the Mayor, yesterday. Col. August
appeared as counsel for the accused. Landrutn
was sent on to be tried for felony, but, under the
peculiar circumstances of the case, was admitted
to bail. He will find that his son’s penny whistle
will cost him a sweet penny. What a great fire

A Darrel Full.—A deacon residing in Ash
tabula county, who was acting in the capacity of
colporteur, called in a shop in Windsor, where
they had dry goods, hardware, notions and some
times a little whiskey to sell. The man who owned
the store wa.‘» absent, and his wife officiated as clerk.
The deacon passed the time ot day, talking about
. religion, and finally a.fked if they had the one
I thing needful (meaning the Bible.) The lady’s
answer ^a.s; “No, we are just out; but my husband
is going to Cleveland next week, and will get a
barrel.”
The latest Irish bull we read of is the case of
an Irish gentleman who, in order to raise the wind
whereby to relieve him.'^elf from pecuniary embar
rassment, got his life insured for a large amount
I and then drowned himself.
