Ex-President Tyler in some remarks upon his connection with Henry Clay in this body, at the recent Clay festival at Richmond, (Va.) brought out some remarks from Mr. Jamea Brooks, of New York, in the course of which Mr. Brooks thus sketched, oflF-hand, the Senate of the 22d Congress, in which Mr. Tyler was an active mem ber: * * * The suggestive remarks of the Ex- President of the United States, (Mr. Tyler), have carried me back to the second great era of Mr. Clay’s life, when I, but a youth and all unknown to him, (Mr. Tyler), was a looker on in the scenes he has been describing, and in which he act ed well his part. Because I was a youth, the more vivid is my memory, and the more clearly can I recall all the men and the history of the 22d Congress. Never, perhaps, did there as semble in one hall a more intellectual body of men than then graced the Senate chamber of the United States; and among them all, Clay shone foremost and brightest in the radiant host. (Ap plause.) Andrew Jackson, of iron will, was Pres ident; the brilliant meteor of South Carolina was Vice President. There was John Hoime.s, ol Maine, sharp, witty and keen—an owl by night to espy out lacts, and a Cossack by day to spear with them the enemy. There was Sprague, his colleague, but in everything his contrast—elo quent, elegant, scholar, too, as well as an orator. 'J'here was Isaac Hill, of New Hampshire, the onee renowned and well feared editor, writer, gueirillero, scn'ptor, as well as actor rerum. There was the classic Robbins, of Rhode Island, who had Pinder and JEschylus at his fingers’ ends and .Juvenal and Per.ius, and to whom Delphos and Parnassus and the golden sands of Pactolus were as well known a.s Narragan.sett or Pautuck- et. (Laughter.) There was Prentiss, of Ver mont, Judge, Jurist, Juristconsult, at home with Coke on Littleton, and more at home with Fcarne on Contingent Remainders. (Laughter.) There was Foote, of Connecticut, if not himself immor tal, embalmed for immortality in the great de bates of Webster, Hayne and Benton, on “Foote’s resolutions.” (Applause.) There was Marcy, of New York, Governor, Secretary—a man not of books, but by his genius above books—who prtAa- bly never read Vattel,Grotius, Puffendorf, orBur- lemaqui, but who knew all about them by in tuition. (Applause and laughter.) There was Dickerson, of New Jersey, strong for a protective tariff, but stronger yetfor Andrew Jackson; (laugh ter;) and there was his colleague, Frelinghuysen, whose name is not mellifluous, but whose periods flowed in mellifluous eloquenceand in soothing sen tences, and of whom we made music, nevertheless, in our political songs of Clay and Frelinghuysen. (Laughter.) There was Dallas, of Pennsylvania, af terwards Vice President, now minister to England; he, too, was strong on the tariff, and strong for An drew Jackson—strong too for the Bank, but stronger yet for Andrew Jackson; who had the strange luck to be against his 'party ia almost every principle, and yet to win its high- e.st honors and positions. (Renewed laughter.) There was Clayton of Delaware, the Secretary, Negotiator, Diplomat, (the Clayton and Bulwer Treaty,) who would read novels all night and skir mish in debate with Zouave-like agility all the ensuing day. There was Samuel Smith of Mary land, the soldier, the merchant, the stattsmai!, in a very enlarged sensj of the word. 1 remem ber well Mr Clay quoting poetry upon him. though without my special leave or the ^ Barbour) doubted written ptnnl^?*on of D. I’here was King, of Alabama—eie- irant, highminded, accomplished, also—who, though not old, became the father of the Senate, from his long continuous service there. There was Poindexter, of .Mississippi—“Old Poins,” as he was called—both keen and cutting, too— clear sighted and clear headed, with a great razor like logic that cuts everybody without seeming to try to do it: (Laughter.) Ohio sent her Ewing —Tennes.see, that Cato, Hugh L. White, a very Homan in look and act; and Grundy—Felix Grun dy, a leading member in the Democratic firm of 1812, which the t'ederalists nick-named as the firm of John Holmes, Felix Grundy and the Devil. Jackson against his native State, South Carolina. Webster ranged himself on the side of Gen. .Jackson. The light ninglike eloquence of Hayne flashed against, and struck upon the Websterian shield; but all in vain. The giants themselves of the Senate Cham ber—Clay and Webster—next came into hot col lision upon the subject of a gradual reducii>n of the Tariff of 18'2H; Clay for, Webster against it. The debate was unreported; but it was-- one of the I most brilliant struggles of those giant minds, j These were indeed troublous times. South C’aro- ' lina had mu-^tereJin Charleston, all bristling ;n j arms, and Gen. .Jackson had sent Gen. Scott *ith , Col. Bulkhead and others to meet war with war. But amid and over all this storm, there locked out one serene spirit that hushed and calmed the
