VV Messrs. CHURCH & DUPONT, No. 409 Broad

est medicines of the aje, and is rapidly driving out of
the market all the quaoh nfjtrums of modern times. Its
efficacy is so great, and its superiority so justly acknow
ledged, that it is fouml difficult to supply t-lie immense
and increasing demand for the article. Dr. Eaton’s
celebrated 'Infantile Cordial,’ is a medicine prepared by
a regular physician of eminence in liis profession, and
one who has devoted liis life to the peculiar phases of
Infantile diseases. It is no humbug, but a medicine

Kdvcard Everett at Boston on tht -ith nf July.
—A Boston correspondent give.s the fbllowinj'
brief sketch of Mr. Everett’s Oration at Music
Hall, Boston, on the 4th of July. .)ur corres-•
pondeiit says,—“Edward H^verett haj .-poken hun
dreds if times here, but he was, projiably, never
received with sq much enthusiasm, tfte jircat as
sembly rising up and tjivini' hitu cheer u{»on
cheer.”
Mr. Everett began by speakinjr of tht- day at'id
of John Adams’ remarkable prediction in refer
ence to its obi-ervance, which had been fulrtlled ‘
to the letter. lie then quoted some j^etiteiiuc.--
from the speech ol Mr. Gray in the British
House of Commons on the llith ot Ajirii last, in
which he argued that the elective fr:mchise should
not be extended in Great Britain, since, in this
country, where it is so universal, the iJcpiihlic is
rapidly on the decline, politically, socially and mor
ally. It was the great purpose ot Mr. i'lverett to
repel the grave charge of Mr. Gray, and to show
the wonderful progress of the l.’nitel State* du
ring the last sixty years, in which time Mr firay
contended that we have iieen declining. Mr. K.
remarked, if there has been this decline, it retltjci.s
upon the English people, lor we are nio.stly of
Engli.sh origion. But there is no truth in the
a.s8ertions of the Englishman, or if there is any
truth in them, it has been greatly exaggi-rated.
J^lr. J]. proceeded to show our material progro.^s
in the last sixty years. The popuiatioi^ of the
colonies in the revolution was 2,000,000. 'fhe
next census will show that we have o2,000,(»i0.
We have added 20 States to the original tliirteen
colonies. The rise and progress oi such cities as
Cincinnati, St. Louis, Chicago, has not been eijualed
by that ot any other in the world. Our own Ful
ton discovered the power of steam, and on the very
waters where that proud British ship now is mcor-
ed through the influence of the same ]K.\ver.
The orator passed to consider our social [)rogress.
We have authors, scholars, poets, jurists, kxici'-
graphens, geologists, chemists and scictitilic im-n
generally, that take rank with the be.st in the
world. Our schools and semin»rie.s are not ex
celled, except, perhaps, by those in Germany.
We have painters and sculptors whose work
of art would adorn the best galleries of Kuropo.
Many of the public journals of I'^urope are print
ed upon American presses. The wheat flelds
of Europe are reaped by American machine*.
American books are found in all the con.iiderable
libraries of Europe.
Mr. Everett next considered our progress in
benevolent contributions and in religion. He freely
admitted that we often have scents of violence in
American cities, in the backwoods and upon fhe
frontier settlements. So there are mobs in Great
Britain, there are scenes of civil war and anarchy
that are only repressed by Parliament often carry
ing through some favorite act of reform. The
conclusion of the whole matter is, that our nation
has the clctuentH of as much st:ibility and pi og
ress as any in the world.
Horrible iStatt of AJfairs ou the Frontitr.—A
correspondent of the Galveston (Texas; News,
writing from Weathertield, Texas, on the Oth,
says: I have just returned from Belknap and
Jacksboro’. Young county may be considereil in
a desperate condition. Anarchy almost daily ex
hibits its unhappy rule there. Four men were
killed in that vicinity during Court week: Collins,
Bivins, Adams, and Cornett. The case grew out
of the reserve Indian question, and the ‘‘(f. L.
M.y letter, as 1 understand. Cornett, w!io killed
Neighbors, and whose wife was cajitured bv the
Indians and carried away, was charged with an
assault on Dennis Murphy, with intent to kill. A
writ was issued and placed in the hands of an
officer, and in attempting to arrest him, Cornett
was shot by the officer’s posse, as he resisted the
execution of the writ. The other men were killed
by persoiis unknown. It is said that some of the
Rangers in Col. Johnson’s command were eng.aged
in the killing of Bivins, Adains, and Collins.
One Anderson was killed by the sheriff and
posse of Young county a short time before court.
His brothers and friends armed, and sought a
chance at the sheriff up to court holding, when
the sheriff resigned his office. It is .said that
j there is not another man in the county who w‘ll
j accept the office.
i Mr. Newhouse was wounded not long since by
j the Indians—a party of twelve—and died in a
I few days afterwards. A Mexican was with him
j at the time of the attack, who was killed upon
{ the spot.
j The “Jiuhtiff Pugstrm.”—M. lietzius, we hear,
. died in the full pursuit of science. On his dying
; bed he made his observations on the progressinf'
dissolution of his own body. “This struggle ol
! death is hard,” he said to those about him; “but
it is of the highest intere.st to note this wrestle
between life and death; now tlie legs aro dead,
j now the muscles of the bowels cea.se their func-
, tion; the last struggle must be heavy, but for all
I that it is highly interesting.” 'These were his
: last words.—Lomion Alhenituin.

We seldom import anything from Irelaml but
■ bulls. Vet the I)ublin Bench has just given us
a les.son in the way of preventing dnel.s that i.s
eminently worthy of imitation. Two dandies were
brought before a magistrate charged with intent
to fight a duel. The justice had very serious
doubts as to the really pugnacious iuclii.ation
of either ot the professed belligerent'?; so he dis
missed them upon a promise “not to cnrry the
matter further;” but added, “Gentlemen, 1 let
you off this time; but, upon my conscience, if
you're brought again before me. I’m blest if I
don’t bind you both dowu to fight.” The adop-
‘ tion of such a punishment in Washington, as that
hint«d at by the Hibernian judge, would make
i “affairs of honor” in Congress more rare even than
honor itself.
