THE ZOUAVES OF THE REVOLUTION, T)i thf Kditurs of tlie Eceumy l^uat: At this tiiiic it nuiy be interesting t\> jotir numerous readers to know that there wen- Zouaves in the War ol‘ Independence, 'i'he vx- tr;iet of a letter, written by a youn; .soldier in tlie Connecticut army to his parents, which follows, .states the fact: ‘‘Dear l*arents: Our company urrivnl lure last night very late, hungry ami tired, ’i’ruinijig is a good deal harder than old Squire Fell tells of. If he’d marched lourteeu mtlcs a day i»»r three days and carried his piog, befeides lather’s old French war fusee, I calculate he’d not been so encouraging to us boys. 1 don t find tiiult, mind: I only wish to let you know that we^lire not on a May party. ,. “At Milford tavern wo were joined ^ two companic.s of soldiers from New Ilavan and-a company of ‘queer fellows,’ as Jake c^ls tli^m, from the Southern colonies. Tiiey are r:lIoill«o, and are commanded by Colonel Cresap. Tlit'y don’-t use any beds, as we do, but sleep right-'on the ground, all in a row, like Indians do. tful their antics in militar}' exercise are of the cu- riousest kind. They load and lire their rifles lyin; flat on their bellies. After that they tangh* themselves all up in a knot, and look just like a porcupine, with their guns sticking out all over them. But, the wondermost part of their actions is their hittiug a mark. Any one jof [them can hit a small potato at forty rods di.stanee. You never saw anything like it. When we get to camp I will write more about these riflemen, who woald amuse the girls if they could see them cut their antics.” The rest of the letter is of a private nature, ajid uninteresting to the public. The company described in this letter Ts also alluded to in Moore’s Diary of the Revolution, a* follows: “August 7, 1775.—On Friday evening last arrived at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on their way to the American camp, Captain Cresap’g company ot riflemen consisting of one hundred and thirty ac tive, brave young fellows, many of whom have been ^ the late expedition under Lord Dunmore against the Indians. They bear in their bodies visibh- marks of their prowess, and show scars and Wdunds which would do honor to Homer's Iliad. 'I'hey show you, to use the poet’s words— “ ‘Where the gor'd battle t)led at every vein!’ “One of the warriors in ]»articular shows the cicatrices of four bullet holes through his body, 'rhese men have been bretl in the woods to hard ships and dangers irom their infancy. Th« v ap pear as if they were entirely nnaequainted withanl had never felt the ptassion of fear. Witli their rifles in their hands, they assume a kind of om nipotence over their enemies. One cannot much wonder at this when we mention a tact which can be fully aUested by several of the reput:4'le per sons who were eye-witnesses of it. Two brothers in the company took a piece of board five inches broad and seven inches long, with a bit of white paper about the size ot a dollar nailed in the ceri- tre, and while one of them supported this board perpendicularly between his knees, the other, at a distance of upwards of sixty yards, and without anyTiind ot rest, shot eight bullets through it succes sively and spared a brother's thigh. Another ot the company held a barrel .stave perpcfndicularly in his hands, with one edge close to his side, while one of his comrades, at the same distance,, and in the manner before mentioned, shot several bullets tl.rough it without any apprehension of danger on either side. The spectators, appearing to be amazed at these feats, were told that there were upwards of fifty persons in the same company who could do the same thing; that there was not one who could not plug nineteen bullets outot twenty, as they termed it, within an inch ot the head of a tenpeany nail. In short, to evince the confi dence they possessed in their dexterity with these kinds of arms, some of them proposed to stand with apples on their heads, while others, at the same distance, undertook to shoot them oft; but the people who saw the other experiments declined to be witnes-ses of this. “At night a great fire was kindled around a pole planted in the Court-house square, where the company, with the captain at their head, all naked to the waist, and painted like savages, ex cept the captain, who was in an Indian shirt, in dulged a va.st concourse of people with a perfect exhibition of awar-dance, and all the mwiuKuvres ot Indians, holding council, going to war, circum venting their enemies by defiles, ambuscades, at tacking, scalping, and so-forth. It is said by those who are judgt'S that no representation could pos sibly come nearer the original.. The capt^iin's ex pertness and agility, in particular, in tlieso ex periments, astonished every beholder. This morn ing they will set out on their march for Cambridge.” hujUiU ^vLilUi/ jFivc liundrtd i'tars A^o.— in loiil, ilugh 8pt;iiccr, head ofoncof tiie groat laiuilies, for some politcal tuisbeiiavior was ex pelled troul the realm, and his property conli.sca- led. Two Legislators were recently conversing upion the subject ot voting, when one ot tliein iiKjuired, ‘•Well, now, but what is a man to do wlicti he don’t know anything about a matter.''’* ell,’ replied the oilier, “I have got two rules :ibout that I When anythin..; comes up, I keei>s my eyes open and votes os mebooy else does wnotii i Re lieve to be honest, or else ivote against it. 1 t’c-• lieve, as a gener.i thing, the safest way irf'tj vote against everything.”
