THE CONSECiUE.'^Cti TO NEW YCJRK
We have been furnished, says the Baltimore
South, with the following extract from a letter re
cently received in this city trom a gentleman
formerly of the South, now residing in New \ork,
in whose accuracy and veracity implicit reliance
Hiay be placed it will be read with profound
interest;
New’ York, May 10, 1801.—Business of every
kiudis completely prostrated here, except that con
nected with > nuy supplies.
-\ierchauts of every class are daily suspending,
assigning, A:c.
Uuiiditas of stores are vacant. As I came to
I my olhce thi.'? iiiorintig, 1 counted in vuc block,
seven stores for rent, of a cL^s.-» u.,uaity rented for
§i'J,OOU to eJU,UUU each 'J'wo hundred iml-
lOMSof dollars worth ot cotton, nee. &c., pro-
. ducts oi me South, aiiuually paying a eouitnisaion
to .New iuiiL, lu some way, LesMes employing
; Norchernshipping ciiieily, and tlieii .;-2UU,(JU0,00U
of suppiic.'i ui return, being now suddenly cut off
' iruiu Aew iork, tnusl bring Uerangeineiil, ruin,
and Uistiess to every aepartnieut of business,
whether counected uireetiy with Southern trade
or not.
i And whatever the belief of the people in this
latitude may be to the cuntrury, the South will,
: trom year to year, do less business with the Nortli,
; even if there ^liould be an amicable settlement ol
1 the present troubles. She is learning her own
I strength, by the present trial—and awakened now,
I she will use that strengtii to export lier own pro-
I ducLs from her own ports; to draw her own bills
j ot exchange; and to import her own goods—ex-
I cept such as she can manufacture for her.self.
j The longer the General Government continues
: the blockade of Southern ports, the better the ul
timate ressult tor tlie 6oul1i.
; in the practice of rigid economy for two or
! three years, and Jurrtd in that time to manufac-
! ture tneir own articles of necessary clothing, farni-
! ing implements at.d uiacliineiy, the Southern
! people will accjuire the skill and habits—which,
! upheld by the determined chivairic spirit of both
j sexes, will make them entirely inuepeiident ot the
I -North. No explanation that can be made by
Conservative New York ) no professions of
sympathy ol >iorthern people lor the South—no
glossing over of their late abandonment of the
Siouth as shown in their hypocritical rally around
“the Stars and stripes'’ “to defend the capitol"
and “repossess the public property,” none of these
will .satisfy the Soutli, that the infentioK of the
Government Was not to attempt coercion of the
seceded States and liberation ol the slaves therein.
The antecedents of the members of the cabinet
—even those of Lincoln himself—the course ot
their leading republican newspapers, and ol their
prominent politicians, jushj^ the belief of the
Southern people, that the wliole movement ot the
tiovernniLiit is neither more nor less than a
‘■stupendous John Jirown raid,” and the sole in
centive of New York, a reckless grasping for the
recovery of a trade whereon has been based their
j>ust prosperity, and which has so rapidly eluded
their ciuich that it was gone—and as the sequel
will show—irrecoverably gone—before their or
dinarily acute conmierciul optics had become fa-
miliaiized with tlie bignals ot its departure. The
di^.-ioiution of the L nion is to be deplored—it
may be, the mode of its dissidution was not the
j best—yet mistaken as may fiave been the South
in fier selection ot tliib mode, the Lincoln admin-
i.->traiion has so managed nutters as to produce
: u;iaiterable alicnuiion of icelltig and the least
j possible injury to the material interests of the
• oouih.
j i tiere never can be a political re-union—the
1 South Will be entubiislitid .Mioner or later in a se
parate confederacy—it nuy be at the end of a
j bloody war—at tne wil; of the FeUeral Govern-
■ meiit. 'i he North has everything t*j (jam and
