tween subjects of the powers at war, and the re-
I mis.sion of funds in money or bills to tlie enemy’s
I country, are equally unlawful. Buying from an
j enemy, or selling to an enemy, ia a contract, and
{ unlawful. Any trading whatever, whether in
goods, or stocks, or bonds, or notes, between the
citizens of belligerents, is forbidden bj the laws

acknowledged the demoralizing effects which woald
result from the admission of individual intercourse
I between the states at war. The whole nation is
embarked in one common bottom, perhaps strag
gling for its existence, and must be rceonciled to
one common fate. Every individual of the one
nation must acknowledge every individual of the
other nation as his own enemy^ because he is the

{ “A’o Irish Need Apply.”—Such is the frequent
I advertisement in New York. No wonder that
i the poor destitute lj^K>rers from the old country
look with contempt at the inglorious return to
I Gotham of the crack regiment ot that city—the
i bloody Seventh, the natives—sons codfish
! aristocracy! The foreigners—Irish, Scotch, Ger
man—are left to incur the perils of invasion—to
encounter the heats of summer, the risk of fever
and black vomit—hot shot and cold steel! The
Post cries out to these:
“Go on, brave fellows; cut us these Southern
throats.” And the same paper, in dulcet tones,
exclaims:
“Return to us, beloved Seventh, our sons and
brothers of Fifth Avenue, and other fine places;
we need you here, to support the police and keep
the d—d Dutch and Irish down.'’ Every sylla
ble of this has been substantially said by these
beautiful doublevoiced instruments of Abolition!
“No Irish need apply!"—Chas. Mercury.
Massachusetts Volunteers.—A Boston corres
pondent of a New York paper says: “1 tell you,
Massachusetts will send men who ‘will fight till
from their bones the flesh is hacked.’ They will
wade through blood and slaughter in support of
the Stars and Stripes.”
It was a Massachusetts General who led the
Federal troops in the battle at Bethel Church.
He waded “through blood and slaughter" to get
out of the range ot Southern bullets, and we opine
that the valiant Butler of Massachusetts would
have been equally precipitate in his retreat. The
New York Day Book thus pungenlly answers the
following bit of braggadocia:
In the war of 18 i:^, and in the Mexican ^ar,
Massachusetts boasted that she furnished no
_ mitiiVifT' I troops—said it was “unbecoming

Suiuyyled Meat Sent hack.—Lo-
June 17.—A large quantity of meat smug^
from Madison, Ind., has l>een returned. The
movement compelling the return was headed by
the Southera iiight:^ men, oft the ground that
the Northern men having established the block
ade, they should not dii^honestiy secure a benefit
by infnitgement. Any idea of local selfishness
is removed t>y the face that there is no bacon
here with wnich it could compete.
i^otton in India.—A most important fact,
elicited by Parliamentary investigations, of the
culture of cotton in inUia, is, that cotton there
can only be cultivated ouce in three years, ad-
vaiitugeuuisly, ou tlie same land. Another great
objeciiou IS, the .want of adequate means ot trans
port to the seaboard.
Arkansas Heroine.—The Pocahontas (Ark.)
Advertiser, of the 31st ult., has the following:
Miss Williams, the daughter ot Isaac Williams, ^
living in Black River Swamp, about seven mileS j
from this piacc, heard the report of the approach
of troops to this place on Sunday evening. Her
fatner was not at home, but she immediately
caught a horse and wa^i soon olf in search of him.
She found him at a neighbor’s and told him to
hurry home and get his gun and come here and
help drive back the enemy. She then returned
home, got down her father’s rifle, moulded his
lead all into bullets, took the gun, powder and
bullets, and hid them under the house, and again
got ou the horse and rode to several houses and
spread the alarm, returning home in time to give
the old man his gun and ammunition, and start
ed him, with a crowd of ten men whom she had
collected, tor the scene of action. All of this she
did in less than two hours.

A I*atriotic Lady.—Mrs. Dr. J. C. C. Black-
buru, of Pike county, has sent to Governor Brown
her tine gold watch, with a request that he sell it
and apply the proceeds to the support of our gal
lant troops in the field. Mrs. Blackburn ex
presses her determination to wear no more jewelry
while the war lasts. While such a spirit exists
among the women of Georgia, the men will never
be conquered in the field.—Mil. Federal Union.
Send your little child to bed happy. What
ever cares oppress, give it a warm, goodnight
kiss, as it goes to it« pillow. The memory ot
this, in the stormy years which fate may have in
store tor the little one, will be like Bethlehem’s
star to the bewildered shepherds: “My father—
my mother loved me!” Lips parched with the
world’s fever will become dewy again at this
thrill of youthful memories. Kiss your little
child before it goes to sleep.
