The London 2'imes’ Correspondent on the Re treat.—The Washington correspondent of the New York Commercial writes: Last Sunday aiternoon, from the direction of Centreville, there came rushing onward a con fused mass of transportation and artillery wagons, ambulances, Congressmen, carriages, horsemen, pedestrians, &c., all in headlong flight, on the way to Washington on “important business.” Among these a solitary horseman, English as to his aspect, and fat and ruddy as to his appearance, galloped up with great rapidity, and demanded in stammering tones a passage through the line. His stammering utterance was more contused ow ing to the doubt in his own mind whether he was at the mercy of a Union ora Secession Regiment. The Colonel refused to allow him to pass, but fi nally yielded, on his asserting that he was a ci vilian, and that he had a pass from General Scott. The pass showed that he was Wm. 11. Russell, LL. 1)., and the pussy Englishman gave new meaning to the fateful day of ^‘•Bull’s' Run. Feats of Jiiijht from the Battle Field.—The Boston Traveler has the following: It is stated that a number of members of Con gress, who were spectators of the tight on Sunday, accomplished some extraordinary feats ot tall running when it became apparent that the tide of battle had turned. We learn from him that this well known British firm designs estab lishing an agency in New Orleans, for the import ation ot goods, wares and merchandize of every character, direct from Europe, with the view of 1 supplying all orders from Southern merchants. I Every movement of this kind—the natural se- ! quence of Lincoln’s blockade—will add to the i growth of Southern cities in just such proportion i as it detracts from the industrial prosperity of I those in the North.—Memphis Appeal, ilth. A Good ISale.—The Schr. Herndon was sold by J. Myers & Son, the builders and owners, to parties from Virginia for 87,5UU cash. She was ; purchased, we learn, by or tor English subjects and for a direct trade with England. I The Herndon, we are informed, is 4 years old, ; 144 tons, Custom-House measurement, and has I made 43 trips in 39 months. Messrs. Myers & Son are preparing to build at ; their yard a brig for the European trade. This I will give employment to a number of mechanics, and put another vessel on the line to the ports whence in the future must come the merchandise ; we buy abroad. The enterprise of these gentle- : men is worthy of all praise. We heartily wish ' them success.— Washinyton {^N. C.) Dispatch. A Woman's Offurintj.—The following little presentation was found on the fly leaf of a Bible, “Let this book, my dear husband, be the com panion ot your loneliness. When thoughts of the dear old homo, and the sad faces, that will brighten only at the coming of the absent loved one, till thy heart and dim thine eyes, turn to this book for consolation; when the “pale horse aud his rider” are gathering victims on every hand, pray mightily to the Lord of hosts, and his angels shall encamp around about thee. Be pure, be good, and may God have thee in his care and keeping. Lula. Onions—Curious Phenomenon.—“How is it that you raise so large and nice onions?” 1 aaked of an Iowa lanuer as 1 was sitting at the table with him, and observed some on his table. ‘•Well,’’ said he, we sprout the seed in boiling water, and then plant it early anj in good ground,” “Sprout the seed in bouing waterl” 1 ex claimed, inquiringiy. “What do you mean by that/ Won t boiling water kill the seedr’ “Not at all,’' he replied, “but it will sprout them in one minute’s time.” “It will! It looks incredible,” 1 replied with surprise. “Well, you try it,” he replied, grinningly, “when the time comes to plant, ana you'll find it just as I tell you,” And sure enough, when spring came, and my neighbour was about planting his onion seed, and being present, 1 said: ‘‘Jewell, la.st winter there was a man told me in Iowa, that to pour boiling water on black onion seed would sprout them in one minute. Suppose you try it.” “V ery well,” said he. And takiiig the teakettle boiling from the stove, he poured the water thus boiling on the seed which he hid in a saucer. Looking at it for a moment, he exciaiiiied, “.My conscience! you have been told rightly—only look there!” 1 looked, and behold the little sprouts were shooting out of the opened endsol the .-eed! lie did not retain the water on tiie seed above three seconds, and in less than one half minute after it was poured off the sprouts were projecting from the seeds. My Iowa friend assured me that this process would advance the growth of the onion I'roiu two to tilree weeks bejiond the ordinary method of planting wit.hout sprouting.
