Grand Review of tlie Army by the president. —Fairfax C. Generals Walker, Longatreet, Cocke, and Jones were out with their brigades; also, Major Walton^s battalion of Wash ington Artillery. The day was beautiful, and the troops were in high spirits. It was a magnificent aflfair, and occupied three hours and a half. . The President left for Manassas at 5 o’clock this evening, en route for Richmond. UPPOSING that there are those having capital they would like to invest in pulling into s]>eedy opera tion divers classes of manufacture which must now be established in the South. 1 would take this method to inform any such, that 1 have a never failing W.VTER- Pt)WER. (with plenty of rejoin.) at the Merchant Mills in the centre of Fayetteville. N. C., capable of running any machinery of light order, and would be pleased to have the same profitably employed. Vandalism.—A correspondent of the Utica (N. Y.) Herald, belonging to the N. Y. 26th Regiment, writes as follows from Camp V'ernon, Va:— “There is usually no lack of provisions. When a volunteer gets into a field of green corn, or into an apple or peach orchard, and pitches up a pen ny to see who owns the fruit, he generally wins. Cows find new dairymen, and pigs suflf^er martyr dom on bayonets. It is a sad sight to see the con dition of some houses on the “neutral ground” between the two armies, where scouts of both parties commit their depredations. I went, for instance, last Saturday, to the splendid residence ot Col. Kemper, situated just in view of Mt. Ver non, and on the skirts of the valley which con stitutes the immense and beautiful farm of George Washington. The family had been obliged to go South, leaving the house in charge of the ser vants. It has been common plunder ever since. Magnificent bureaus, tables, stands, clocks, &c., are broken or carried off. The pickets cut off as much of the tine carpets as they think they need for their tents, and carry them home ad libitum. A certain Northern Surgeon took a valuable piano and sent it home, which, as I did not get a chance at it myself, I considered rather a “small piece of businesa.” It was sad, on the whole, to reflect that the residence of a oncc affectionate and happy family should be thus polluted, the heirlooms carried off by a thoughtless soldiery, and the papers, pictures, souvenirs, and even love letters, subjected to the curious and imper tinent in.spection of hostile strangers." Paid Jones.—“It is only adventurers that per form gieat actions, and not the sovereigns ot large Empires.” So says Montesquieu, and the expe rience of the world proves the truth ot the maxim. Commodore Paul Jonea was an adventurer, but he did more for the naval glory of the young American republic than did the government itself. His little vessels bearing but tew guns, man ned by few men, but directed by a lion heart and an imperial will, carried terror and destruction into the British channel, and threatened even Al bion’s haughty King with a visit. Are there no such men now? Is the race of the sea Hone extinct’!* Cannot something be done to show our ability and power upon the ocean as well as on the land? \JH. lOl a XAUU UWi.1 J:iO. w.-. y . Enormous Expense oj the Lincoln Government — Tke Loan a Faihire.—We give as matter of news and information to our readers, what we learn from the Northern press—that the daily ex penditures of the Lincoln Government are now two millions of dollars. Just think ot that—two millions per day! While the Lincoln Government b expending two millions per day to pay horse and mule con tractors, shoe, bread, clothing, and all kinds of army outfit contractors, the Government loan is going a begging in the great cities, among the monied institutions of the North. Their papers announce that one city took a tew hundred thou sand, and an individual or two took a thousand or so. Why, that wouldn’t buy enough beans for one day’s rations. S' R. Last year we noticed that a patent had been taken out at the North for tanning leather by the use ot dog fennel or wild cammomile. \Ve wish some of our planters would try the substitute for oak bark, and give us the result. It is highly important at the present time to stir up the home made leather question. Dry the dog fennel, and then boil it thorough ly in a I'lrge kettle, and reduce the bulk of the decoction by boiling it until it has suitable strength. If this material will do, this country can furnish leather enough for home use with but little trou ble.—Planters (//«.) The Herald states that a few days before two families, pretending to hail from North Carolina, reached Cincinnati in a destitute condition. gave a touching account of the manner in which they had been treated by the secessionists of the Old North State. They so wrought upon the feelings of the people of “Porkopolis” that a large suni of money was collected and given to them, and they went on their way rejoicing. Shortly after two families from Tennessee appeared, the members of which had barely escaped with their lives, and thev too procured considerable money from the soft-hearted Cincinnatians. It turned out, how- ever that the two families from North Carolina," and the two families from Tennessee were composed of the same individuals, and that the unsuspect ing and credulous Buckeyes had been “taken iu and done for” by some sharpers who were not even residents of any of the Confederate States. They may console themselves with this reflection, however, that the statements made by these bogus Southerners were a.s true as the majority of stores they have heard from the lips of refugees from the Sunny South.—(^Ala.) Advertistr. A Gootl Way to find out the (jirl*. A man came to Philadelphia some years ago exhibiting six boys and six girls, but all of them were dress ed in girl’s clothes. They were all so much like girls in appearance that he made money betting that no one could tell t’other from which. An Irishman went out and returned with a dozen ap ples. Throwing one to each of the children, he observed that some caught them in their hands; these, he said, were boys. Others held their aprons; these, he stdd, were giris, Pat hit right.
