J. DEVEREUX, A. Q. M. October 4, 18tjl. (j.3-tit Amateur Scouting.—The Army correspondent of the Charleston Mercury, writing from Fairfax 0. H., relates the following; Early on the morning of the 15th of Sept., while the dew was still glittering on the grass, we took up the trail for Munson’s Hill. We met our Pnthtinder on the road, made arrangements for the succeeding day’s tramp, and having nothing ’better to do, by way of a preparatory exercise, went down to our pickets to try conclusions, at laug taw, with a Yankee vis-a-vis. We found our friends sitting quietly in their rifle pits, which are strung along the base of a hill, running par»l- lel with the line, sufficiently high to conceal them from their antagonists. Far on the right stood a large three storied barn, where a few sharp shooters were lying perdue, and by the rattle which was going on at that point, we knew at once that the real fun lay there. So we crept down cautiously towards it, the Minnie balls, meanwhile, humming overhead like a swarm of bees, and running the gauntlet through an inter vening strip of open pasture land, reached our wooden castle in safety. I’assing through the stone basement we climb ed up into Loft No. 1, on a rickety ladder, and found ourselves caged with two men armed with Minnie muskets, in a room strewn with hay, honey-combed with shot holes, and piled up at the front with loose fence rails. Judging the latter to be the defensive works of the fort, I sat down behind a pile of them, ducked my head, and asked one of the riflemen to show me the enemy. He pointed through a large auger hole, that looked like Saturn belted with his moons— it was so ringed by mu.«ket balls—to a skirt of woods some distance ofl^, and replied: “There they are, sir.” After a long, careful scrutiny of the spot, I objected that they were not there. “Yea they arej you fire at ’em and you’ll find out; they never show their heads ’till we draw on ’em, and tlien you have got to take your chance.” “How far off is it?” About four hundred yards or a little less.” So we put up our back sights for four hundred yards, took places at our different port-holes, and “made ready.” Taking careful aim at a clump of dead brush which was said to be a man trap, I pulled trigger attd the smoke had not lifted before back came a Tolley from twenty guns. One of the balls pass ed through both sides of the barn, not two feet from my head, scattering the splinters in every direction. Our party replied, aiming at the spots whence the puffs of smoke came, and thus we kept it up for a while, but with what damage, if any, to the enemy, no one can tell. .^1 Japanese Hotel.—A chair was brought for me to sit in European style; and the Japanese landlady, a middle-aged, black-toothed personage, of comely looks and polite manners, made her ap pearance. Her husband soon r*joined our party, and both combined their endeavours to ascertain our wants and meet our requirements. She was soon followed by three young waiting damsels, wearing their natural sets of glittering teeth, with their native ruddy complexion enhanced by a little artificial addition of pearl dust and rouge, and their lips stained with a dark purple crimson. These young waiting girls are always selected as the most beautiful and prepossessing of tlieir sex, and conducted themselves with simple, artless modesty. In all parts these public houses are served by the most handsome girls; and I was in formed that tliey are a well-conducted class, and that the Japanese law rigidly protected them while filling such a capacity in these houses of retirement. On this occasion the landlady and her native damsels overburdened me with their attentions, placing my chair in the most conveni ent spot, re-arranging my traveling coverlets, wiping shoes, placing a cushion on my seat, and anticipating every want. Cakes, soup, rice, and sweetmeats were brought in "Succession. One laughing, bright-eyed damsel approached me kneel ing, with a cup of tea in her hand; another held some sugar, kneeling on the opposite side; while a third, from her lowly posture on the ground, held to my lips a boiled egg, already broken and pealed, with the spoon containing the inviting mor.sel, dulj’ sea.«oned with salt. With garrulous vivacit)’ they anticipated every look, and when my wants were supplied, they remained close to my side, and vieing in their endeavours to be the first to bring me their native dainties. They afterwards examined my dress; and every portion of my equipments formed the subject of exciting comment and humourous wonder. European shoes, stockings, woolen cloth and umbrella were eager ly examined, and afforded matter for renewed curiosity and mirth. Forly Years’ I'aiiiiliar liCtfers of Jas. A-sv Sa'jnmite—Portable Fqod for Scouts.—The old historians and travellers, and Indian fighters, tell us of an admirable and easily portable food, which the Red men carried with them in their poudhes on their hunting and war parties. It was a combination of Indian meal and brown su gar, three parts of the former to one of the latter, browned together over the fire. This food, in small quantities, not only sufficed to arrest hun ger but to allay thirst. This is the famous aa- (jamite of the Red men. A few pounds in one 8 haversack would occupy little space, and would serve for several days. Let our boys, here and there, try the preparation in camp, and learn the uses of the article before going on a^march. Their friends might prepare a supply of it in the citieS) and forward to the camp; and if upon experiment, it shall prove palatable, it may be prepared in any quantities. In the siege of Charleston, in 1780, the people lived wholly on rice and sugar for some weeks. Savitiy Bacon.—A correspondent of the ! Huntsville (Ala.) J. DEVEREUX, A. Q. M. October 4, IStil, 63-6t PROILAMATION By His Excellency, Henry T. Clark, (iovernor of the State of North Carolina. Raleigh, Oct. -^rd. 1861 In pursuance of the power given me by the 19th sec tion of the Constitution, and by and with the advice of the Council of State, I do lierebv prohibit the exporta tion beyond the limits of this State, of all bacon, pork, beef, leather, men’s shoes, woolen g.oods, jeans lind«eys and blankets-except ‘he orders of the proper officers of the Confederate Governmen;, or of the State ^^fh!T™der of the Hth ult. is hereby i evoked. The Adjutant General is directed to employ all necessary means to carry into full effect this order. Done at the city of Raleigh, this 3rd day of October, 4 D., laoi. HENRY' T. CLARK, Governor Ex-ofBcio. Oct. 5, 1861. 4t iVIetliodi!«t Hymns and Discip- lines, a new lupply, asiorted siies and quaTities March to the saving of bacon. The gist of the matter is contained in the following extract; If our planters would refer to quotations, they will observe that molasses can be had in New Or leans at 25 cents per gallon, and rice iii Charles ton at 3 cents per pound. If they will change their mode of allowance, and give pounds of moat, 2 pounds of rice, 1 quart of molasses, and I peck of meal, they will consume home pro- d’lctions, rice and molasses, to the partial exclu sion of foreign uteat. Estimating the number of full hands at 1,500,000, you will see that this plan, which gives pounds of meat, instead of 4 pounds per week, will diminish the consump tion of bacon 2,250,000 pounds a week in the Confederacy, and the negroes would be much more heiJthy.
