Having had several yeirs experience in the business, I flatter myself that I can make your stay at ihe EAGLE, both pleasant and agreeable. W. H.ARDIE. Oct. 16. ♦10-If From the Charleston Mercury. Mr. Lditor:—The enclosed verses, by one of our Ladies, were shown to me by a friend; and deeming them worthy of publication, with the permission of the fair authoress, I send them to you. They are supposed to be, the dying lament and aspiration of an imprisoned Privateersman. Tf our women can feel and write thus,—what should be the action of our men? THE PRIVATEERSMAN’S FAREW-LLl ''Adieu, belle France, adieu! Te quitter c'est mourir!" [Mary Stuart’s Farewell to Fbancb.] Farewell, my Carolina’s sun, whose glittering golden beams. Thro’ ray sad prison walls, fall round me in my fev’rish dreams. Never again my fading eyes shall brighten in thy gleams! Farewelll Farewelll But ever from my hateful dungeon, drea^iy, dark and dim. With cruel fetters clanking cold, upon each free born limb, Upward, outward, hameward, floats my fearless farewell hymn. Farewell, dear Carolina’s sun and sky! For me to leave ye, was—to diel My fond heart wanders chainless, on thy well known sunny shore. Where the long rolling billow beat?, with ceaseless plain tive roar. There, save in fancy, my worn feet shall wander neter- more! Farewel'! Farewell! .My spirit mocks these bars; and lika my Ocean’s faith ful shells, Tho’ far from our loved waves, still, still, their murmur swells Ourhearts within! I hear the chimes of oldSt. Michael’s bells, Ring my farewell to Carolina’s sky— Oh home! lo leave thee was—to die! Oh home! Oh friends! ’Twas hard at tirst upon this fearful brink Of Death’s dark sea, to stand alone, unfriended, and not shrink. Oh hard! of loved and loving ones, to tremble as I think! Farewell! Farewelll But with my strength, the bitterness of all this Death has past. And with the fading light of life, the longing grief has past— Faded away. Peacefully and hopefully, I bid my last Farewell to Carolina’s sunny sky. Dear ones! to leave ye was—to die! My brother! I’ll not sadly say my fate you must forget! 1 know thy buruing heart, and in my cruel murd’rer’s debt Thou'lt not remain; nor fruitness long, shall be thy stern regret! Farewell! Farewell! But in thy wrathful woe, remember who to man did say. To wronger as :o wronged—“V’^engeance is mine—1 will repay”— So, calm like mine, shall be thy last adieu, thy dying day! Farewell to thee, and Carolina’s sky. Brother, to leave thee was—to die! For thee, my Country, victory and glory crown thy fate Near to eternity, I see thine end predestinate. Grand is *hy future, vain is thy foeman’s furious hate! Farewell! Farewell! For thee I lived, for thee I fought, for thee I die. And if my death advances thy great cause, let not a sigh Be breathed for me! Oh friends! more sweet is immor tality. More bright than Carolina’s sun and sky. For country, ’tis not hard to die! Fast comes the night! The glorious sunlight of my dream comes back. Now weary world, no longer stretched in pain upon thy rack. My soul fleets upward on the bright’ning sanbeam’s heav’nly track. Farewelll Farewell! All pain and cruelty aud wrong, now vanish in the past. My ship leaps o’er the seal My pennon flutters from her mast. Kiss me, sweet breeze! The Jloosiers and t/te Down-Easters.—The Chicago Tribune, calling tor a draft in order to bring out the Yankees of the East, says: Is it not a burning shame that New York, New England, Pennsylvania aud New Jersey, with the aid of the Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, In diana and Minnesota men now on the Potomac, can not defend the Capiul and through it their own chief cities, without stripping our army of the West of troops in a crisis like this? We tell the laggards of the Atlantic seaboard that it is time tor them to t>estir themselves. They have now got from us of the Northwest 30,000, to say nothing ot the Indiana and Ohio men under Gen. Rosencranz doing good service in Western Virginia. Vet the hard fighting is to be in the valley ol the 31issi.ssippi. The West will demahd, not tor the purpose of compelling her sons to their duty, but for secu ring to the army of the East the services of cow ardly or unpatriotic New England, New York and Penn.sylvania, that the work oi drafting be at once begun, fiut in this heavy draft ^ade upon us in the face of imminent danger, there is this consolation: With our brave boys in the van of McClellan's army, there will be no more such pitiable exhibitions as we saw at Great Bethel and Bull Run. They will teach your Fire Zouave? and such like cattle the art ot war. But it for nothing else, let the East be subjected to draft for men to carry our men’s luggage and to serve as cooks in camp. .1 Good .Joke on Fremont.—A gentleman who had returned to Arkansas from a visit to St. Louis, coiiimunicates to an Arkansas paper a good joke on (Heneral I'remont, who, it seems, got up, mount ed and eiui})ped a body of troops as a special body "uard; their horses wore superior, and their arms and appoiiitnieiits ol' the tinest description. He w:is proud of it. It was to be his pet. But one day this line b(»dy went out to perform sundry evolutions at about two miles from the city, and they never came back. They were last heard of in J-.neral Hardee’s camp, where they accident ally found their way. If any one wants to see Fremont mad, it is only necessary to mention body guard in his .presence. ►« HA, Hau SI. 10,000 wholesale or retail. YDS. PRINTS, unusually low, either by e or retail. 50 Doz. The sweet potato is pre pared for parching by being cut into small cubes somewhat less in size than ordinary dice, and ex posed a few hours in the sun or air to dry. The yam potatoe is recommended as the best variety for this use.
