THE BATTLE OF LEESBURG. A correspondent of the Richmond Dnpfttoh relfttM the followings— All battles and combats have their interesting incidents and hairbreadth escapes. I know of several in this. One incident I must relate be fore I close, leaving the hairbreadth escapes for another communication. When the contest bccame general, and in the thickest of the fight, might be seen an elderly gentleman, not at all connected with the army, with no impulse, or motive, other than the same that warms the heart, and nerves the arm of all true Southern men in the glorious cause ot our second independence, riding in the rear of the line, encouraging the men to conquer, or nobly die on the soil of their “sunny South.” I have heard it suggested by the soldiers engaged, that George Calvert, of Fauquier county, Va., should have the. commission of a General, for his bravery I and happy influence on that occasion. The old ; gentleman would halloo at the top of his voice, I w’here “leaden rain and iron hail” fell thick and ! last around him, to the men: “Boys, if you fall, i God s>rant you may have a seat around the throne I of the (lod of Battles—fight on, and the victory ' is ours in time and in eternity—fortune favors I the brave—God will save the brave—fear not, no ' harm shall come near you—not the smell of' fire I shall be upon your garments— j ‘In the God of Battles trust.’ I You are in a glorious cause—fight on, my brave j boys', fight on! and may the Lord have mercy up on you, and bring you off victorious.” I will here venture an opinion, and belief, that ! these, with other pious ejaculations uttered by j that good, pious whole-souled Southern gentle- : man, whose locks have been whitened by the j frosts of three score years and ten, without di»- I paragement, did as much, if not more, to en- I courage the men on the battle-field of Leesburg ' j to deeds of heroism, and to urge them on from j “conquering to conquest,” than did the General , in command with all his military skill and ability. 1 Such noble proofs and exhibitions of aelf-iaori- i ficing heroism should be recorded, and with plea- j sure I chronicle the same. I H7ui^ is said at the Street Comiri.—^The ! street corners of Richmond are plentiful of war ! rumors. They are, in fact, the war “intelligence” I offices for the loafing news-mongers and credu lous public of hangers-on in Richmond. No j story is too extraordinary to obtain credence at I the street corners, where the war is eloquently ; descanted upon by little knots of people, with a ■ wonderfully egotistical soldier or some h^- Jrunken old pundit detailing hia information with “hems” and an important drag of speech, I forming the central figure of attention. The street corners are in constant communication with all partB of the seat of war, have momentary tel- 300 lo bbls. No. 1 CotTee Sugar. * • n • ‘ * A few bbls. extra N. C. When the oracle opens his budget I it is with the preface that the information comes j from “one of the Cabinet,” or “a high officer of i the Government,” or the plural authority of “pas- sengers bj' the Central train. So the wonderful } story is disclosed, its retailer generally impressing I it on his hearers by an important costiveness in .rel' House m thi'^ City at 7 o’clock. Such are the revelations of the oracles of the street corners. They always stop short of particulars. They are often under obligations to some confidential informant to say jtwt so much and no more. They are impatient ot interroga tions, and hugely pleased at being the centre of momentary attraction on the part of quidnuncs and fools, and credulous gentlemen in search of the “latest information” that will serve for them to carry home to excite their female fnends and alarm the family. Seriously, this idle and often cowardly circu lation of alarming and sensational intelligence is a nuishnce on our streets. Its reproduction in the papers adds infinitely to its mischief. • Richmond Examiner. We The Tone of Bullets.—A soldier, writing from one of the caiiipj on the Potomac, thus alludes to the peculiar music made by bullets passing through the air: It is a very good place to exercise the mind, with the enemy’s picket rattling close at hand. A musical ear can study the different tones of the bullets as they skim through the air. I caught the pitch of a large sized Minnie yester day—it was a swell from E flat to I*, and as it passed into the distance and lost it-s velocity, re ceded to D—a very pretty change. One of the most startling sounds is that produced by the Hotchkiss shell. It comes like the shriek of a demon, and the bravest old soldiers feel like ducking when they hear it. It is no more de structive than .some other missiles, but there b a great deal in mere sound to work upon men’s fears. , The tremendous scream is caused by a ragged edge of light; the phenomena can sometimes be seen, as you stand directly behind a gun, of the and will manufacture in Richmond, .as good | clinging of the air tO the ball.
