To the Sheriffs of the se?eral Coaatiei of
North Carolina:
IT is’deemed not only desirable but an imperative du
ty, that early measures be taken to accumulate a
supply of winter clothing for the North Carolina troops
now in the field. Tiie scarcity of material for sale in
the State, and the uncertainty of procuring supplies
from abroad, force us to rely on our domestic resources
It is thought that every family can spare one or more
Blankets' without personal inconvenience, or a pair of
NN oolen Socks, and it is believed th-.it for such a pur
pose a call would fee responded to with alacrity.
It has therefore been concluded that an appeal for
this purpose be made to the great body of the people,
and with that view I have to request the Sheriffs of the
several Counties to act as agents of the State, to solicit
a contribution of this kind.
To this end they are requested to circulate this no
tice, and employ agents in every distriet of their county,
to further the matter.
All contributions of this kind may be boxed and for
warded to the nearest Railrrtad-Depot, and due inforiua-
tion thereof sent to the Governor.
The Sheriffs are further requested to furnieh to the
Governor a list of the donors.
The transportation of these donations will be at the
expense of the State—and the bill for such service
should be duly forwarded for payment.
HENRY T. CLARK, Governor of N. C.
Ln cheerful compliance with the several requests con
tained in the above Circular of His Excellency Governor
Clark, the undersigned. Sheriff of Cumberland, has
made provision within the several Districts of the Coun
ty for the reception of contributions for the provision
and comfort of our gallant soldiers.
As it is our pride to know that the good old county
of Cumberland has sent forth her best and bravest sons
to the baitle-field, so will it be to us gratifying to feel
that we have ministered to their necessities and cheer
fully contributed' to their wants It i therefore un
necessary to make any appeal to the charities of a peo

THE ERUPTION OF VESUVIUS,
j Naples, Dec. 10..*-sFrom Naples little is seen
I excepting tltose grand columns of smoke which,
rise gigantically into £H« air, and wViich, accord-
1 ing to as clo.se a measurement as could be made,
j were calculated—that from the* lower mouths at
; 10,000 feet, and that from, the upper crater at
. 3,000 feet in height. Our streets are tree from
■ the dust of the mountain, and though for some
time after the sun rose it appeared to be in a state
i of eclipse, yet to witness all the wonders of the
1 spectacle it is necessary to^leave the capital and
visit the site of the disaster.
From the confines of the city to Torre del Greco
one passes between two lines of a curious popula
tion who have turned out to see the crowds who
flock Sown to Torre del Greco The wind blows
! off the mountain due North and South, so that,
' until you get just under the column, you are not
exposed to the shower of dust which falls thickly
and constantly, almost blinding one and certainly
not conducing to easy respiration. Ou arriving
. at the devoted little town, which numbers, by-the-
! by, 22,000 souls, I found the place, except at the
, station, almost deserted. Every house was aban-
I doned, and, as proving how rapid was^the flight,
: melons and other articles still hung suspended
; outside the windows. At.the station there was
a vast crowd of persons, some of the last lingering
j inhabitants, with Jbeds and other articles of furni-
■ ture, anxious to be, off.
i The first thing which strikes the eye is the
' blackened appearance tsf every object, the fine dust,
which had fallen in heavy shtJwers, lying four and a
' half inches in depth in the streets and on the
■ tops of the houses. Some of these were cracked
lohorizontally across the flat roofs, and others per-
: pendicularly, but it is not until you turn ofl^ to the
: left, 51 little beyond the station, that the full point,
i as'cending the mountain, a number of houses are
I pas^sed which have been “most materially injured,
: from 400 to 500 in all, and rendered to a certain
j extent unsafe. At one house in particular, a
handsome building too, the proprietor, who kad
I returned for some articles w^hich he had left be-
I hind, was breaking the windows to get in, en
trance by the doorway being impossible.
! On the 8th instant, at about a quarter past 11,
i A. M., a great trembling of the ground was felt
j at Torre 'del Greco, which continued at intervals
• of from live to ten minutes. The po'pulation were
: in great alarm,^ expecting an earthquake. At
I Re.''i this treniuIou«> motion was felt, though not
■ >iO stronL'Iy, about mid-day. Towards 3 o’clock in
the afternoon a large opening was mad"e in the
•ground above Torre del Greco, and a half a mile
•lower than the crater of 1774, and the first cone
was formed underneath the house of Francesco
Cruel. This house was thrown into the air, as
were four others, in a Meseria close by. The
lava has arrived, on the morning of the 9th, at
about a ((uarter of an hour’s walk above the Mon
astery of the Cappucini, which has been destroy
ed; and is a half a mile.in breadth. All the
houses in Torre have fissures in them, and the
populution have fled to Naples. At the time that

I tain was tranquil, but about 2 o’clock in the
moriiing the grand crater at the summit burst
out with a tremendous noise, throwing stones and
. ashes to a great height. Every effort of this kind
is accoinpanicd by a sound as of thunder. One
of.the-guides, called Genuarino Sannino, while
j iittemptiiig to get a piece of the red hot lava in
which.’to jiut a coin, was killed on the spot by
, a stone which fell upon his head.
I The road .'and the streets by'which you ap
proach the principal point of interest, are, in ma-
, try pi.ices. opetied; indeed, in liiany places there
are indioatidns of the crru«t of the earth giving
! w;iy to the subtejrarjean fires. The principal of
tltese cotres is an ellipse, and both at first sent out
a lody of lava, which threatened Torre del Greco
with rapid'destruction. The opening of the main
crater, at '2 A. M., of.'Monday diminished the
violence of the lower stream, and, possibly, saved
the town.
Last night the view which pre.sented itself
from my wi:idows was very grand; the black col-

of Roman-eandles, played about the crater. This
tnorning the volumes of smoke are rising and
rolling cne over another in grand involutions,
while the eastern sun* behind them gives hues
whii-.li it is difficult to describe. Beyond the pall

I think much property wiH be destroyed,
though not many lives, as all have escaped.
What is ruin, however, to many, is prosperity to
others, and there are many here who aro calcu
