Oct. 2, 1861. Obituabt Noticcs.—We have heretofore given notice, repeatedly, that wo charge for obituary notices of un reasonable length, and for resolutions of respect; bu- eause that kind of reading, we have much occasion to know, is not often more agreeable to readers than to editors of papers. Ai it generally happens, however, that after charging and paying postage ou tue acoauut for warded, we never get paid, we now give notice that we will insert nothing of the sort hereafter utjless aoconi- panied by the cash. (Always excepting in the cane ot deceased volunteers, wheti we require no pay. i Bear in mind, therefore, that we will insert, obituary tmiices and resolutions, not exceeding 70 words, gratis. For all over 70 words, one cent a word, which luust be paid be fore the notice will be put in type. From the Charleston Courier. We revive it now, iu pleiaed recollection of his infinite humor and facetious- nes-s, while entertaining an equally lively reraem- brauce of his ion" continued, bold, eloquent and i efficient representation of the Palmetto State, and : championship of the South, in the Senate of the once great and glorious, but now dismembered ' and humiliated Uniteu States. The amusing occurrence was in this wise; ! Judge Butler was dinini'; at the White House, ! with a large party ot ladies and gentlemen. While L. J. .Merritt. (.’iierokee—A. T. Davidson. Chowan — R. This unexpected explana tion of the funny incident only the more set ••laughter shaking both his sides”, and swelled : the uproar, until the very roof rang with the j merry peal. After order and silence had been restored, the Judge humorously confessed the j awkwardness of his predicament, and explained ; that, in a fit of absence, after performing his ! toilet, he had unconsciously, along with his hand- I kerchief, thrust one of -Mr. Hunter’s stockings I intf) his pocket; and added, “for Heaven’s sake, j don’t tell that woman, Mrs. C**y, of it.” I The prohibition was, ol course, disregarded, and j Mrs. was soon put in possession of the sto- I ry.
