^4 N^ohle Kxample.—Amidst the folliea and ^
sanguinary excesses of the Republicans of the
French Revolution, it is impossible not to admire
the energetic measures adopted against the fer-
eign enemy. Europe had combined on the side
of royalty. France was menaced on every side
j by their well trained armies, under leaders of re-
I putation and experience. Her own people were
iivided, her ports blockaded—yet the prepara
tions on the part of the French were such as no
age or country had ever before witnessed. The
capital, and every city in the empire, became at
once an arsenal and a workshop for the armies.
The Assignats compensated for the want of the
precious metals, circulated in the name of the na
tion. They exhausted the treasuries of mauy ot
^ the crowned heads of Europe. All Frenchmen,
Hoaden, .John Manning Jr.,! by solemn decree, were declared to be at the ser-
! vice of the country, until the invaders were driv-
‘ eu from the soil of F"ranee. The young men
i marched to meet the foe—the old men forged
! arms and provided* provi.sions—the women fabri-
' cated tents and clothes, and attond«ii the hospit
als—the children made lint to dress the wounds
of the patriots. At tho very moment that the
idea of a nation’s rising “eu masse” was ridiculed
throughout Europe, the Convention, under the
direction of Carnot, had created eleven distin«t
armies. Now for the result of this unexampled
energy and patriotism.
The British historian of the time informs us
that in seventeen months the I’rench armies
gained twenty-seven general battles, had been
victorious in one hundred and twenty-seven ac
tions, and had taken one hundred and sixteen
strong cities and fortified places. These succes
ses were obtained over the best disciplined armies
in Flurope, elated with their past triumphs over
warlike enemies, and commanded by generals of
great experience and most dazzling reputation,
while the armies jof the Republic consisted of
officers and soldiers, few of whom had seen ser
vice, and commanded by generals hitherto without
renown.
Not content with driving every enemy from
her soil, the population of the conquered coun
tries which France acquired from her enemies,
was estimated to amount to thirteen millions of
souls. This period of F'rench history affords us
an instructive example. They contended for an
absurd abstraction—we for a vital reality. Their
watchword liberty, fraternity, equality—ours lib
erty, regulated by law. They fought and con
quered a world in arms, for glory—a single na
tion threatens us with subjugation, and our homes
and household gods with plunder and pollution.
Let us emulate the heroism of the French.
Richmond Whig.
Will you icalk in, Mr. Flyf—The Y ankee Gen
eral, Buell, is reported to have issued a procla
mation to the people of Tennessee, premising
them all manner of good and gracious things, if
they will lay down their arms and submit to be
slaves. He does not *use the.se precise words—
but talks about allegiance and loyal subjects, &e.*
forgiveness for the past and respect for th« fu
ture. But the language is intelligible enough.
Only remain tjuiet until we Y'ankees can get the
fetters upon you—that’s all we ask.
Such proffers of grace and bounty are the bit-
tei est and most humiliating insults that can be
offered to a free people. That there may be some,
who, from timidity or sordidness, may accept tlie
degrading proffer, is likely enough; but no man
who appreciates the precious blessing of free
dom, and is worthy of it, will for a moment listen
to the vile suggestion. Let it everywhere be met
with war, stern, relentless, interminable war.
Flxtermination is a thousand times ^)referable to
such degradation. ,But if we meet them with
becoming spirit, we shall visit the extermination
upon them.—Richmond Whig.
What sculpture is to a block of marble, educa
tion is to a human soul. The philosopher, the
saint, and the hero; the wise, the good, or the
great o'an, very often lie hid in the plebeian; which
a proper education might have disinterred and
brought to light.—Spectator.
