I From the .Memphis Avalanche.
! TO THE TRUSTED DEFENDERS OF ISLAND 10,
I “Ail Desperaudum!” Li.stenI Two thousand
years ago three hundred Spartans, with their
: brave king, Leonidas, stood in a narrow pass—
I the pasp of Thermopyle! To their right, ocean;
j on the left, mountain; behind them lay their
I homes, their firesides, the graves of their ances-
I tors, and the temple of their Gods. They looked
j out upon ten thousand flashing spear heads, upon
j the glitter of ten thousauu swords, grasped in ten
j thou.sand brawny right arms—the right arms ot
I ten thousand Immortals—the pride of the Per
sian army
Three hundred pale faoe^, three hundred knit
brows, three hundred pAirs of flashing eyes in that
narrow pasi A cry of Homel Greece! Liberty'
and the ten thousand were upon them They
j stood firm, firm as the rock behind them, and. the
j Persians recoil from the shock, as the waves from
I the granite ledge at the base of the mountaii^
The crashing of splintered spears, as the tempe.st
I howling through a dead forest; the din and clat
ter of sword stroke on bemlet, as the ringing of
ten thousand anvils; the shrieks of wounded men
as their comrades trample them down in the mad
rushing backward, and the three hundred are fit
their work. Leonidas has fallen! Nd desperan-
dum, brave Greeks! And through the live long
day they battle around that corse, each arm a host.
Revenge and a noble death, the prize—they gain
ed both. That night the vultures of Mount
.illtna gloated over ten thousand cold, upturned
Persian faces.
The three hundred have perished gloriously;
the Immortals have proved mortal; terror is
stricken to the heart of the tyrant; Greece is
saved. Ail dttperaudum!
With love, with faith, with prayer.

“Sun," of the 2d says: “The State Road ha*

I Reported Capture of a Yankee Kevctpaper
I Man.—The Baltimore American, of March 26th,
1 has the following; “Mr. Buxton, of the New York
! Times, was captured yesterday by the rebels, and
I taken to Richmond."
j Burn$id*.—The Savannah News intimates that
I Gen. Burnside, who seems disposed to ravage
I our coast and if possible to advance into the State,
I ia a native of North Carolina. We think this is
! a mistake. It is not a North Carolina name, and
I we have never heard of the intimation from any
j other source.—Ral. Standard.
