Can We Arm our Men.—The Charleston Mer cury replies: Yes, with weapons of some sort. A bullet sent from a shot gun will kill a yank^e, a pike will let out his soul if he has any. But we will not be left to shot guns and pikes alone. The last of the Gladiator’s cargo reached a Confederate port yesterday. You know her cargo was broken into portions at Nassau and imported into the country by the enterprise of Southern merchants in small vessels. In this way the entire cargo has at last reached us in safety. The Demand for Negroes.—Notwithstanding the operations of the yankees, the people of the South seem to have great confidence in the “institution,” and the demand is as good as ever. A few weeks ago, we advertised two negroes for sale for a gentleman in this county, and those wishing to purchase were directed to inquire at this office. VV'e suppose the gentle man who advertised the negroes could have sold* a hundred by this time if he had them for sale. Charlotte Democrat. Nauyhtg.—Adjutant General Wayne in a let ter recently written to a lady, in answer to an inquiry made by her about copper and brass (for gun metal) concludes by saying: “1 meulion this, that we may not have our wives stripped to no purpose.'’ An official announcement of the fact was uncalled for.— i.ommonicealth. The Commonwealth perpetrates the foregoing. Our neighbor must have forgotten, we presume, when he penned the naughty paragraph, what gave rise to the celebrated “Order of the Garter” in England, and the motto of that order. ‘‘Hout soil yui maly pense"—Anylice—“Evil be^o him .that evil thinks.” But we wish no evil to our neighbor, and only notice the paragraph to set* Gen. Wayne right, it seems, from a copy of a letter, which appears in the Savannah “Nows” of Tuesday last, that the gallant general wrote: “I mention this that we may not have our ruojs stripped to uo purpose.” The word ‘■‘■roufs” was un fortunately printed '■'■v:ices’' With this explana tion, we trust thatall the good wives of the country will be satisfied, and pardon that printer’s blunder who mistook the covering of a house for those, without whom the house itself would be lonely, dreary and cold.—Atlanta Intelllytncer.
