WEST POTXT SOLPTRRS. The following particulars of the hwtory prom- iuent officers of the Confederate *nd Ijnitfd States, graduate' ‘be Academy at West Point, are believed to be reliable, to 1850 the facts stated are taken from the Register of that institution, compiled in that yeai'. A short explanation will enable the reader to_,undor- stand the statement*. • Kaoi cadet after graduating is entitled to the rsuk of 2d Lieutenant, his commission bearing date according to bis proficiency in his studies, in drill, &c. The discipline and standard of scbolar- ehip are very high, as may be inferred from the fact that, an average, about two-thirds of tha cadets who enter the Academy are dropped in the four years’ course, from ill health, bad con duct, laziness or inability to keep pace with tbeir more able classmates, leaving about one-third only to finish their course and attain the rank of 2d Lieutenant in the regular army. A graduate attaining high distinction in his cla,ss, must po.-^- otfss not only fine mental endowments, but pby.si- cal dexterity and vigor, and habits of punctuality. The numbers in the subjoined compilation denote the respective class rank—Xo. 1 boing highest, No. 2 next, aiul so on; the first five being regard ed as peculiarly distingui.'liod, whilt: those having lowernumbers must be highly accomplished officers —much more tliorou/hly educated than are usu ally the graduates of other CollegeH. The class rank was adopted in 1^1^. It is interesting to notice in what cases ‘‘age has performed the prom ises of youth.” or 1^1.').
