[Ip to the stated are taken from the Regi:iter of th:it institution, compiled in t>iat year A short oxplanation will enable the reader to under- .■^tand the atatemer.tfl. Each cadet after graduating is entitled to the rank of 2d Lieutenant, his commiasion bearing date according t') his proficiency in his studies, in drill, See. The discipline and standard of scholar ship are very high, as may be inferred from the fact that, on an average, about two-thirda of the cadets who enter the Academy are dropped in the four years’ course, from ill health, bad con duct, laziness or inability to keep pace with their more able classmates, leaving about one-third only to finish their couwe and attain the rank of 2d Lieutenant in the regular army. A graduate attaining high distinction iu his cla.ss, must pos- ■^ess not only fine mental endowments, but physi cal dexterity and vigor, and habits of punctuality. The numbers in ‘he .subjoined compilation denote the respective class rank—No. 1 being highest, No. 2 next, and so on; the first five being regard ed as peculiarly distinguished, while those having lower numbers must be highly acooaiplished oflSners —much more thoroughly educated than are usu ally the graduates of other Colleges. The class rank was adopted in 1818. It id interesting to notice in what ua«es has perfc>rmdd the prom- itfcs of youth.” CLASti OP 1815.
