The Editor of the Progress left home last night on a short business trip to New York, and will be absent ten days to two weeks. It is the first ces sation that he has had from the drudgery of his position since ha returned last August and it is to be hoped he will enjoy it. During his absence tec that is the Reporter, foreman and others per manently connected with the office will conduct the paper, and should it improve in interest to us and not to him will belong the glory. He told us to say just what we pleased about politics, and we shall; but wo shall hoist nobody's name, for we don't admire that no more than he does. Challenges and invitations to spend the evening out, intended for the editor, will be received and honored by us during his absence. - From certain memoranda which we caught a glimpse of in his note book, before he left, we think the public may look out for enlargements and other improvements in our Daily and Week ly about the 1st of September possibly before. Libellous Charge. A portion of the press and some of our State politicians have been recently seized with won derful forebodings as to the soundness of our peo ple on slavery even some of them affect to be lieve that the irrepressible conflict" is already, raging in North Carolina and that additional pro motion is required and further guarantees must be made to stimulate the patriotism of a portion of our people. especially the poor men ! These as sertions and charges are as absurd as they are gratuitous -and false, and are an insult to those for whom intended. If we have traitors or abolition ists in North Carolina they are those whose eter nal, demagogueical cry is, " Tin the friend of the jioor man." The poor man wants no friend the law is his friend, the Constitution is his protector, and the liberty which he helps to defend is his armor and shield. lie. one of the poor men, scorn any man or set of men iu this free and enlighten ed country who would thus attempt to insult our intelligence. The pour man's friend, forsooth; the politician or office-seeker who goes to the peo ple with such fulsome, insulting professions de serves to be kicked out of decent company : and the greatest degradation that poor men can bring upon themselves is to suffer the presence or hear the nonsensical verbiage of such political mounte- , banks. j Some of these intense lovers of the poor people j and brave defenders of the rights of the States ! , , 1 1 t ii ' oven nftect to believe that such men as John I.ell i - . . . .. C . C .l. C".,.. .1. I ! and Stephen A. I ao-o-ue who expects to achieve a short lived fame liv his contemptible abuse ot such lionored names will sink himself to an infamy which will put him "beyond the notice of all decent men. We care not what a man's politics may be, if he has ever shown himself true to the Constitution and the Union he is entitled to and shall receive defense at our hands, we care not how weak such defense may be, and he whoso prejudice causes him to denounce and abuse all who differ from him, po litically, is not only unfit to have the management of a public journal but he is unfit to live. Charity is more needed in politics than. perhaps, anything else, and yet politicians of all people are the least disposed to exercise it Especially is charity necessary at this time among those who profess to revere the Union and express a deter mination to defend the Constitution, for lamenta ble as it may sound, there is not a single national organization in this time of trial to which the pa triot can cling not a party to inspire the hopes of the lover of his country all is confusion con founded, and we have only to wait and watch. But by all means let us, here at the South, be charitable, and not denounce those "who are as sound and as pure as ourselves because they do not belong to our party. In for the Fight. The Scotland Neck Netcs, published somewhere in Halifax county, and started a few months ago as a neutral sheet, comes out now for Bell, Everett, Pool and Mr. Ad Va lorem. He closes his declaration thus : These, we hope, are reasons sufficient for the course we intend to pursue, and sink or swim, survive or perish, we intend to battle manfully, and to the best of our ability, until we can an nounce to the world that Bell and Everett, are President and Vicce President of these United States, and that John Pool is Governor of North Carolina. Fourth of July iu Ncwbcrn. The celebration of the Anniversary of our Nation al Independence was conducted with great credit, to both citizens and military, and in a manner satisfac tory to the large and intelligent audience who at tended upon the ceremonies of the occasion. The Programing as published in our paper for the last week, was earned out with precission with the exception of some slight variatons as to time. The Military, notwithstanding the oppressive heat of the' day, turned out in numbers sufficiently large, and entered into the discharge of their various du ties ra a spirit that clearly convinced us that heroic chiveiry i3 stilialif e among" us, and that should our eoil be invaded and the indepenence of our citizens put in jeopardy Newbern can furnish the men who will strike terror and consternation into the camps of the'enemy as did our fathers ia the memorable day's of 1776. The Neuse Cavelry Company were out on Wed nesday for the first' time since their organization. This is a beautiful company, well uniformed and fseemed to be well drilled for the short time they have been practicing, and ia an accession to our town and county, of which our peopie bhould be justly proud. Thia company with the Infantry and Hiflemcn form a mill tarry force, not only crnamcn- j tal to our town but creditable to the State, and to doubt, would be invincable before an invading foe. The reading of the National and Mecklenburg Declarations of Independence by Messrs Bryan and Lewis was well done, and the Orations of Messrs. Cole and Wilson would have done credit to heads of double their years. The one, taking a cursory view of the past history of the world, contrasting in the most glaring colors our own happy government with the monarchical and despotic governments covery of this country by Columbus, end the establishment of this government by Washington, and the band of noble spirits that assisted him, to the overuling hand of an alwi.se and benefficient Providence ; the other exhibiting untiring reseach into the early his tory of the colony, showing conclusively that our own beloved State was the" very first to throw off the British yoke, and will be the very last to take it on again. The youthful orators were greeted by an array of beauty that we have never seen surpassed, if equaled; and it was as difficult to tell which address was the best, as to determine which of the speakers was the most popular with the ladies, if we judge from the crowd in attendance, for every seat, nook and corner of the Theatre was filled with anxious listeners on both occasions. : The whole performance closed by a grand dis play of fire-woiks at night on the Fair Orounas, at which, from the immense concourse of people, the entire population of our town must have been pres- j ent. Long will our people, particularly the little j boys and girls, remember with pleasing emotions the night of the lth of July, 18G0. j Theatre The Parkers. Our play goers need scarcely be reminded that the Parker Family will appear again at our Theatre this (Friday) evening. We know that our people will welcome them back, and we bespeak for them brilliant houses for the few nights which they in tend to appear. LIGHT HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS. Tn the Light Ilouse Appropriation Act, as of ficially published, we find the following in re lation to lights, bouys, &c, on the coast of North Carolina : For re-establishing the Beacon Island Light house and constructing in conuectiou therewith a beacon light to form a range for running the Ocracoke inlet, five thousand dollars. For a beacon lignt at a suitable point at or near Cape Hatters Inlet, five thousand dollars. For a new light house at the mouth of Cape Fear river, in lieu of the present structure, forty j thousand dollars For buoying Beaufort Harbor and Bogue Sound, one thousand dollars. For the erection of a light house at the mouth of North river (Albemarle Sound) ten thousand dollars. AFFAIRS IN NEW YORK. Nkw YltK, July 3. The Asia to-morow takes out .$500,000. Clia.s. " Not many 'ears since," says Frazer's Magizine, " certain miners working far underground, came upon the body of a poor fellow who had perished in the suffocating pit forty years before. Some chemical agent to which the body had been subjected an agent prepared in the laboratory of nature had effec tual' arrested the progress of decay. They brought it to the surface, and for a while, till it crumbled away through exposure to the atmos phere, it lay there, the image of a fine, sturdy young man. No convulsion had passed over the face in death the features were tranqnill ; the hair was black as jet. No one recognized the face a generation had grown up since the day on which the miner went down his shaft for the last time. But a tottering old woman who had hurried from her cot on hearing the news, came up and she knew again the face vyeich through 1 all these years she had never quite forgot. The poor miner was to have been her husband the day after that on which lie died. They vere rough people, of eourse, who were looking on a liberal education and refined feeling are not deemed essential to the man, whose work it is to get up coals, or even tin ; but there were no dry eyes there when the grey-headed old pilgrim cast herself upon the youthful corpse, and poured out to its deaf ear many words of endearment unused for forty years. It was a touching contrast the one so old the other so young. They had both been young these long years ago. But time had gone on with the living aud stood still with the dead. Obituary of a Newspaper. The publica tion of one of the oldest newspapers printed in English language is about to be discontinued. It is announced that the interest in the London MorningChroniclo was published some time since by the proprietor of the Morning Post. The Chronicle will be issued, until the 1st of August; after that date it will cease to appear. This intel ligence will not surprise any one who is acquaint ed with the extraordinary progress made by the cheap press in Great Britain within the last few years. One could wish, however, that the Morn ing Chionicle had not been tho first victim of this aggressive spirit of progress. ' There are asso ciations connected with that journal of no little interest. It was in the Morning Chronicle that Sir Philip Francis or somebody else under a well-preserved incognito, gave to the world the Junius Letters, the tame of which has not been confined to those countries where the English language is spoken. These letters appeared in the Chronicle during the term of office of its first editor, Woodfall, who introduced into his paper the custom of regularly reporting the debates iu Parliament, a new feature in English journalism at the time. Woodfall was considered " a reck lessly brave person " for having given publicity to the ideas of Junius Burke, Fox and Sheridan Tom Moore, Campbell, Goldsmith, Byron and Dickens may also be numbered in the brilliant array of writers for " the good old whig of the Strand.
