It is true, friends have urged me to consent to the use of my name in con nection with that post, but I have invariably declined, assigning among other reasons, that "uow is not the occasion for youth and inex perience to control our legislative halls. The tented fUld is larure enough for the ambitious youth of the country, and the young aspirant who seeks honors in the forum note, rather than the field, is unworthy of honors in cither place. The forum needs wisdom, tern pered with age and experience. The tented field needs the vigor of man ly youth. You will please make the correction in our next issue. Yours, rcspectfulfy, C. B. BENNETT AGAINST THE PULPIT AND THE PULPIT AGAINST THE SOUTH The following effusions from the pn of old Bennett will serve better to illustrate the beau, tiful spirit of hurmony and brotherly lore which prevails at the North than anything we have lately seen: lOiOilXG OF THE RIXC, EEXXETT ENTERS AND SAYS : By the intrigues of the Bsilish anti-slavery society and the gold f the English aristocracy by the propagandism of American abolition societies, playing into their hands for the last thirty years, and by the anti-slavery disunion doctrines preached from the pulpit and reiter ated by thii frnatieel press, civil war has bro ken out in the American republic, and two hun dred thousand insurgents on the banks of the Potomac, stimulated and inflamed by the abo lition crusade against Southern domestic in stitutions, stand ready to march against the Union army,to seize the national capital, and to advance as far northward as the success- of their arms will warrant. We know not the moment when tha terrible collission w.ll take place between 400,000 men in arms, all Aiaer caus and brothers. In the midst of this na tional calamity the President, whose wise, pa triotic, and conservative course has won golden opinions lor him throughout the land, if&ues a proclamation for a national fast, in the hope that such of the people as had been led astray by the demagogues of the pulpit and the press would consider the error of their ways and make up their minds to return to the ancient landmarks of the Constitution a departure riUST r.OUNH BENNETT VPOX CHEEVEK. Said we not truly that tlus was the object of the abolition traitors of the pulpit and press, either to abolish shivery by force, or to cut otf tho slave-holding States from the Union? For such a minister of the Gospel as Mr. Sloane, it was but natural to read with approbation to his audience the assault on the Constitution of the United States in the editorial columns of the Independent this week; and equally char acteristic of the fanaticism which animated his discourse, was the denunciation of the wise sentiment of JNapoIeon as mnuei, mat, x iovi dence is always on the side of the strongest battaiionsa nd the heaviest artillery." TU1KD, FOURTH, AND FIFTH UOUXD3 SHORT WORK. The champion, not used to so many at once. becomes fatigued, exciteu auu desperate, mi. Sloane being slain, his friends, break the ropes and rush to the rescue. The champion goes it miscellaneously, thii3 : Of the same rapid type was the sermon of Mr. Thompson, of the Tabernacle, who said it is necessary to wipe out slavery from the Soulh. While slavery exists our dearest rights are im perilled. It is preying upon our vitals, and must be cut out with the sharp edge of the swerd." To similar effect is the language of Rev. Mr. Crawford, Rev. Dr. Vinton, and Rev. Dr. Tying, the most violent ot all, who describes slavery as the most unrelenting, most bloody tyranny that evrr cursed the earth," and insists that " we must press forward, in the name of God and bamanity, to the utter extermination of the causo of war." " It waa no wonder that a portion of the congregation arose and walked out in the middle of this" tirade, shaking off their feet the very dust of the church. . CLOSE OF THE MILL BENNETT AND BIS BOTTLE HOLDER. Having used up half a dgzen preachers in little less than no lime. ' the champion is at length compelled to withdraw. lie does so without deteriment to his prowess, as nobody remains on the field who is at all anxious to engage in the fray. He calls for his bottle holder and pays him a compliment : Amidst the barren and burning desert of fanaticism presented by the reports of these sermons in the Tribune and Times, destitute of the waters of charity and of life, there is one oasis- -one green spot. It is in the discourse of Rev. Mr. Newman, at the Bedford strcc Methodist Episcopal church. In speaking oi English jealousy and hostility, he says: ' First, the noblemen, or lords of the land, are in hot sympathy with the North, but are saying and doing everything they can against us. The Earl of Shaftsbury stated to him very explictiy, that the policy of England was not to allow the existence of any overshadowing government. They are jealous of our rising greatness, and are determined that .England shall be the greatest nation on earth. 'When you are 00,000,000 of people,' said the Earl, 'you will come over here and dictate to us, which contingency we must and will, if possible, avoid.' The second class are the Engh'sh Abolitionists, who oppose us because we will not make the abolition of slavery an issue of this war. The earl of Shaftsbury said to me, 'If you will emancipate all the slaves, we will sympathize with you. Here then, ar the veiews we have so often expressed fully confirmed by this witness. The Aristocracy and Abolitionists of England are in league with the Abolitionists of America to break up the Union ; and hence the anti-slavery presses and pulpits of the North arc giving utterance to the most treasonable sentiments, against the Union and the Constitution, and are denouncing the Chief Magistrate for his patriotic and conservative action in modifying the proclamation of Fremont. The public safety demand that a stop be speedily put to their muti ny and treason. Were the President base enough to lend himself io their foul purposes, he would justify all that the Secessionists ever alleged against him and against the majority of the North, and would sanctify the Southern rebel ion in the eves of all honest men. Rut the cood faith the President has shown has set at rest all doubts as to the nature and j objects of the war, has given the lie to,the as From the Richmond Examiner. THE "ARMY WORMS" OF RICHMOND. The Washington cor respondent of the Tirruf.. under date of y ester- da y, says that highly important advices have been received from Cuba. i ue oiuiuioii v al Mteuiiier l-le'Ie n.ia ,iiihhq at Cadi, for tlie result of the Cabinet confer ence in relation to an European coalition against Mexico, and that the advices of the ultimatum of Spain might be immediately dispatched to the Governor-General of Cuba. In the meantime an exhibition is being fitted out at Havana for Mexico, under the pretext that its destination is San Domingo. The expe dition will consist ofsix batteries, howitzers, and 10,000 men, and they will be ready to stait the latter part of next month. It is given out that Spain is taking these steps against Mexico on her own responsibility, but ad vices state definatoly that England and France sends their quota of men, and will co-operate with fleets in the gulf. jThe whole country will be startled by this movement, and the public will view the regula tion of Mexican affairs as the least important. The object evidently looks further North. Washington, Oct. 7. Public notice was given that the Savannah blockade would be violated by the llr'tish steamer Bermuda, and the information was communicated to Lord Lyons. He was told that a part of the freight of the Bermuda would probably be 70 tons of powder, Enfield rifles, 50 rifled cannon, 00,000 percusion caps, a large quantity of blankets, clothing, quinine, and morphine. Remonstrances against the sailing of the Bermuda, during the time she was completing her cargo, were made by Minister Adams in London, but the Foreign Ofh'ce did not feel at liberty, or did not recognize the obligation to arrest the assumed unlawful voyage.
