!; I JORDAN STONE, Managing Editor. 8AM'L T. WILLIAMS. Political Editor. - THURSDAY.".. JANUARY" 2. 1S73. . IS 'I II E CENTICNNIAT, CEI.KKK A TION TO RKiFROKTITt'TED TO INDIVIDUAL PltOFriV Wlien the proposition -was. lirst miule to have a centennial celebration in Philadelphia, on the touith of Jifly 187G, we were disposed to Iavor t lie project for scvcial re-isons, and cxprcssi-il tbe hope that our State would he le pre sented. North Carolina did. tier full "part in the Revolutionary war, and was as much erflitleil to rejice Aver the 1:0111 ph linn or a century Irop the date ol the decla ration of Independence a any other State. But asitjc front the commemor ative features ol the occasion, it was proposed, that all the Stages have on exhibition at the Centennial,. specimens of. their natural resources and develop 1 mcnt, and also the evidences of '.their progress in the useful art?, in order to show to the world the greatness am wealth of our country, and the advance ment she has made in the arts 'am sciences in the course of one hundre ycart. This is all well enough and highly commendable. But."" the- Centennia -Committee having tlic matter in charge, 4re now soliciting "pecuniary .aid from Congress..- This of itself is a little sus picious, but if we investigate the plans and purposes of the Committee we are inclined io think the whole affair is a money-making project, to make patriot 19m tributary to the schemes of 1 ankee enterprise atd: dinning" and to enrich certain individuals while the world is gaaing in admiration and awe at the wojKlerful exhibition of American pro- gn ss, power and glory ! The Centennial Exhibition is tvn In cirporated joint stock company, and the object of the corporators seems to b to so manage the affair as to make the . Bt(ck pay handsome dividends. The bonds to the amount of ten million9o dollars are to be issued in shares of ten dollars.' This amount is to be used in providing A, suitable buildings and grounds lor the exhibition, and to defray other expenses incident thereto, and the tock-holdersi are to recey, the dividends, if any, to be derived frdro the proceeds of every source of profit connected with the celebration. Of course the principal revenue would be derived from the admission and entrance fee inut- Qumbcrlcss schemes --wiU-fcc invented to jieUtLrnoncy to the managers and to compel the i triotic visitors from all sections of thlhiUnion to contributc.their mite, in sot'tirr or Other, to sell the grand aggregate of cash receipts, so as to not only . to ndemnify the stock -holders against all loss, but.to make the investment a pro fitable one. From the lights before us, we incline to the opinion that the Centennial Ex hibition is somewhat after the stvle of Gilmore's grand musical concert at Bos ton, intended for individual emolument and profit. In this viewt the. patriotic .object is subordinated to mercenary motive, and . the desire for gain sup plants "and over-rides all noble ! fc. . imputes. -, We do not know whether Congress , will make an appropriation or not in behalf of the Centennial, but we think the people who pay theHaxes of the country -will object very seriously" to contributing the public treasure- in" aid of an individual enterprise, where the profits go into the pockets of t he share holders. With greater propriety, Con gress might donate large sums to build Railroads for the benefit of private stockholders, because Railroads are - i. - - - - - beneficial to the sections through which they pass, and are greatconveuiences to the traveling public. ' .t' We are in hopes that the suspicious which have been excited against the managers of the Centennial -Exhibition may prove unfounded, and that after all, the United States may have an exhibi tion at Philadelphia that will be credit able to the nation and to each and every State of the American Union. PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S POSI TION ON EMANCIPATION. Tlic colored men of this city cele brated the tentli annivejisary ot the emancipatiiin proclamation at ' Metro politan 'Hall yesterday. ';. :" . Astounding Mesmeric Power. A curious casa of mesmerism is re corded by a civil surgeon of Hoshunga-. bad; A young womaji named Nunncc aged twenty four, was married some 12 years ago ; she, however ycliu not go 10 1 1, no I n , I a Iv.vii.o fnrtvvo v'.ir sitter- A(ter stllYinff with him for eig t (ayg suddenly became insensible, foiir or live vears she never entered her husband's house witliout ailing imensi- j We and remaining so lie was very kind and attentive to her; she IiUecl him, but Whenever he came into her presence suc at at once sank into this state. This went on till she became emaciated and exhausted, and. at last the parents ipplied to the court lor a separate main tenance for her While she was in court the husband entered.. and she instantlv became insert sible, and was carried to the hospital. where the case Was r.areiully attended to by Dr. Cullen, iin March this year. While in this state her pulse was eAen, breathing soft,' heV body pliant, but she cipuld. cat nothing. Experiments were caieiully made to see if there was no trick about it. While she was in-bed, lcr husband. was muffled up, ami uiade to walk through the ward. She said she felt he was near her, and she was by no nltujs well, but had not 'seen him anyvhere about. Next day this experi ment"Vas' repeated, and she actually became Insensible, as before. When the husband left the place she recovered. The experiment as to the influence of the husband's presence was tried m all sorts of ways. He was made to pass behind her, and to be near her in a separrtte ward? but this' had no effect, but whenever he was brought to look on her face, though muffled up, or dis guised as a policeman, as a sepoy, and so forth, site was at once influenced The experiments continued for about a mCnth, and the conclusion was that the husband unconsciously mesmerized her 'The court came to the conclusion that it was impossible that she could live .. J , scarate allowaoce was ordered. The husband was asked to try if he could not remove the effect, seeing that he had the power to cause it, but he was quite frightened at the idea of having the power, and could not control it in any way.
