t JORDAN 8TONE, ManagirujTfedltor. BAM'L T. WILLI A MSPol i 1 1 cal Editor. THURSDAY... JANUARY 9 1873. -WI1 T KCL, nF A partisan. WILL NOT BE A PARTISAN. Caldwell the Governor, tells us he means not to be a partisan". in.-his. ad- ministration. Can Caldwell keep cool, and conduct himself cleverjy for four years ? Oh, the shade of the peniten- tiary and asylum quarrel-ghost of , Banquo! Wilmington Star. It is unkind in the Star to seek to bring up the pas after the Governor's pro.nise.of .moods lor the lu.ure I Has not the Governor promised to a bestow appointments upon Conserva- tives, provided he cannot, find suitable . m . 1 a '. I I men in. ma own party lortne-Graces ue of may have to fill ? v, True, the Governor says he hopes to u YTtl men of education, honesty and com pe- tency in the Radical party to get all the crumbs, that may fall from the Execu livetable, but that canfind men of these qualifications among the Kadicals, then he will look to his poht- ical opponents for appointees. na nftf tiiA tfzTi-Rpp in this lano-uae. ifVtonl0u a confeiision that the Governor ts not ture that the Radicals nave a .wuiweui number of suitable persons in their ranks, to fill the half dozen or less ap- .u:lv rna pointmeniB wu:u.. u.. called upon to maKe f , I It may be, however, that the Govern- I - -rAftiwi mntioA in mftkincr 1 r 7k V 7ZZ Wn7 i3 use. of the unfortunate language m his inaugural, to which we have refer- red. He is a 6hrewd politician and may have intended liis remarks for those weak-kneed Conservatives, who, be imagines, can be bought up with offices, and upon whom he would be willing to confer his petty appoint, ments, provided they will promise to support his Administration. . We are sorry for that party whose Governor cannot name a half clozen competent men worthy ot the Executive favor. Such seems to be the condition of the Radical party in North Carolina to-day. Else why did the .Governor Ln-AiT .n,.?nHn' . J J rr Conservatives to omce TIIE DOORS TO BE TIIOWN OPEN. t P v .-el congress oy :ting the Credit A resolution has passed a large majority, instruct Mobilier Committee of investigation to open doors, and to examine , . .. . i ;he witnesses that may be sum- sit with v J . I moned before rt. V This might as well have been done at first, lnasmucii aa tiio suininuvo ? tha testimony thus far taken by the Commit tee has, somehow or other, found its way' into the public prints; and we believe the truthfulness of the state ments published has not been question ed in any quarter. Enough is known of the developments of this gigantic swindle to prove con clusively that the members of Congress, with two or three exceptions, whose names were on the list in the Ames McComb correspondence, received some advantage or profit, either directly or indirectly, from the Credit Mobilier stock. , ' We are glad, however, that all 6ecrecy is to be removed from the proceedings of the investigating Committee, as the public would prefer to receive the offi cial evidence rather than to get it second hand through newspaper corres pondents. We believe the Credit Mobilier affair is the most stupendous fraud on record, and that when all the dark transactions connected with the whole scheme are ful!y brought to light, the American people will stand aghast at the corrupt conduct of leading politicians who have heretofore stood high in the confidence and respect of the public. . When promineut members of Con gress are convicted of bribery and ve nality, the honest men ot the country will cease to wonder at the poitica" demoralization and degeneracy of the age.. - ' .-. . -;-,:- TIIE MORNING STAR. We take pleasure in calling attention to the prospectus of the Wilmington Star, in to-day's paper. The Star asks for support and recog ni'.ion of its claims "on the sole ground of merit." It has now been in existence more than five years, and has been steadily growing in popular favor until it has built up a large and rapidly in creasing patronage and circulation Vkhich is the very highest evidence that it deserves the prosperity it has achiev ed. , The, Proprietor and Senior Editor, William il. Bernard, Esq , has that practical journalistic'' judgment, tate and experience which ' constitute mo Micsi. guaranieg oi success in his profession, and is alao a retdy and forcible writeY. ' The Junior Editor, Cicero W. Harris, Eq., wields a vigor ous, fluent and scholarly pen, andwith an active intellect unites invincible energy and a lofty ambition. Hig edi torials have added -greatly to' the popu larity of the Star, . . After the above remarks, it is barely necessary for us to add that we wisli this bright twinklcr in North Carolinia journalism a career , ol undiminished splendor and brilliant success. Let us har monize : let the experiences of the past be turned to lessons of good, that the res; Its of the future may redound to our benefit aa a party, a people, and a State. The following g'itn statistics are copied from the New York World, which tells us that in 1870 112 persons com mittedcZo de se ; in 1871 the number had fallen to 108; while in 1872 it had risen to 140. As there was no great financial disarrange ment we must attri bute the increase to the. severity of the weather, which has been so destructive of life and property, and consequently a producer' of despair 'in many hearts. The deith from accidental cause have beeu steadily growing for the past three years In 1870 they numbeied 781 ; in 1871, ,8.)1; while in 1872 they had5 grown to 944, exclusive in each case of death by drowning, which follow the same ratio, that is 1G7, 179, aud 206 iu these years respectively.
