Our noon dispatches in yesterday's paper informed ' us that Hon. J anies Brooks was dead. Thereupon we wrote some editorial comments accordingly. Our midnight dispatches of the same date contradicted the rumor, and stated that Mr. Brooks would make a trip South by way ot Norfolk, lor the bene fit ot his health. THE FRENCH ASSEMBLY. The disorder in the French Assembly has not yet been allayed. .On yesterday, the Assembly proceeded to the consideration of the Lyon's mu mcipality bill which gave rise to the recent disturbance in that body. MTGrevy has resigned the Presiden cy, and Louis Martel, the leader of the Right Centre, is jfprominent candidate for the position, y i Vallada, Dennjy fiom Lisbon, tie dared that the crown was beset with danger from latent revolutionary ele ments, but thi3 was denied by the Pres ident ot the Ministry, who replied that the Assembly could trust the loyalty ol the country. THE DAILY GRAPHIC ON COR PORATE CONSCIENCE. The New York Daily Graphic is the niir iiliiatr,.tp.l dn.ilv newsnaner in the world. It was started about one month ago, and is already an established success. Its circulation is rapidly increasing and the demand for it has been unpre- ceilented. Besides all the current news of. the dav its columns contain daily three and I T . , . . t-' ntntll P1.Q 41 illustrating a nan pa-ca o, p.uu, all important events wneievci u.c, u,a) occur." With the, mottoes of "Private Enterprise" and "Might is Right" flaunting lrom the flags waving above the engines, the locomotives; with their Lideous and Irightlul miens, still press on trampling down all opposition, scattering ruin and desolation in their track, and insatiate, heartless, inexor able, devouring everything in their reach. I In an editorial on "Corporate Con science," the Graphic refers to this car toon as follows : "The powerful cartoon on another pftge tells its own tale. Words would n t heighten its elTecl. How is it that a corporation takes all the integrity and conscience out of hu mari nature, and squeezes every drop of 1 humanity from the heart ? The secrecy Ol the corporation makes it a curse. It is formed dnjhe principle of avarice. - It appeals to private greed. It works in the dark. March, 1872, to the present time, has uttered notes ot warning to . the people against the encroachments ot Railroad monopolies, whether State or foreign. Recognizing the great Democratic doctrine of opposition to all monopo- ies. we have steadily kept in view the importance ot saving North Carolina from the clutches of soulless corpora tions. There is danger ahead. .The conflict between popular rights and the tyranny of monopolies is destined to become one of great importance and magni tude, It will require the utmost firmness andviglance on the part of a free, un- trammeled, incorruptible public press to defeat the schemes of the combined wealth and influence of the monopo lists. The notes of warning cannot be sounded too srfon. The hour of battle is not far off. When it comes, let it not be said that the press has faltered in the discharge of , its duties, that it has been false to its lofty and noble mission, that it has fallen from its high estate.
