THE CHOLERA IX TENNESSEE WARNING TO OUR CITY AU- TIIORIT1ES. f , i ;n thP of the cholera in the iue appearauee u. me uuoiei m uv Clues vi xiasuriiic nun iiicuiju i caused considerable alarm throughout x j lL f iia I me counuv auu tue pruuau extending toother points is causing i . . : . much discussion in the papers, doiu i North and South. . -..It For two weeks the new xor. . . r x i ii,' ,Hf. i has been exposing the dangers which nnciacniinarau80uu uuUB Utandard which duty had erected, as irt ;n ti,p Vlisoased atmosDhere of that near Kingston, which ihustrates the cie- . f anvotuer and that the officers . .oni,u,0 unnrnnfttPd with . u . -f:ift poisonous sases general u v ive sewerage system, and with deadly vapors arising from filthy streets. The disclosures made by the World are hav- mg a most salutary eff,c in arousing the authorities to the importance of taking sanitary measures to guard the city a-aiost pestilence and the local diseases incident to the Summer season, FrTm the accounts in the Nashvi.le papers it is certain that the cholera originated there because of the defect of eamtary regulations. The disease is confined to the most unhealthy portion of the citv a uoint where foul and pestilential odors are emitted. The physicians say that with the proper san itary renovation ot the city the cholera M lio ciinnrflcawl in a VfifV short w k...,. .u;fft hv I1C liaVC Utom gicai wmji.u.w J I several oi' our citizens of the filthy con dition ol the streets of Raleigh. At tention has frequently beeu called to this matter in our local columns. Those whose : official duty it is to see that sanitary measures are enforced have a grave responsibility on their hands. The sickly season is approaching. The health ol Raleigh will depend to a very great extent upon the manner in which the city authorities shall pre serve cleanliness throughout the limits of their jurisdiction. Let them take warning by the late ot Nashville and J Memnhis-whose citizens are rushin- r " in great alarm and excitement from their infected homes, to escape the dan gers of a fatal contagion. If the chol era should visit Raleigh this season it will be attributed to the causes given by the physicians of Nashville and Mem phisdefective sanitary regulations. VIRGINIA POLITICS. We are gratified to see the unanimity with which our Virginia Conservative exchanges have sunk all uiiuur issues, and are now battling together in a com mon cause. Local squabbles have been subordinated to the public good. Rail road quarrels have been suspended d -.roCuelmmade to yield to the grand resolve to keep Virginia in the hands of honest officials, and thus save the State from the disgrace and shame of a Radical triumph. The letter of Gov. Wise has scarcely rippled the bosom of the political deep. It has pleased neither party, and is so impracticable and neuijpl as between Conservatives and Radicate that its author has received no encouragement lrom either side. Upon the whole, it may be set down as a splendid failure and a most untime ly production. Gov. Wise's position has caused many of his personal friends the most poig 'nant regret, who, while they utterly re pudiatc many of the sentiments in his letter, Btill treat the eccentric old gentle man with the respect due to his former services to the State. The vigor, the good feeling, the unan imity, and the resolute tone of our Vir ginia cotemporaries, afford the highest evidence that when the crisis cbrnes they will fall into line with promptness and zeal and concentrate their united fire upon the strongholds ot the enemy. We have the strongest hopes hat the nominee, of the Conservative party, whoever he may be, will win the fight and preserve our sister State from the clutches of Radical cormorants and po . litical iconiclasts. THE REWARD OF THE RENE GADES THE MILITARY COM MISSION. The Modocs who deserted Jack and tracked him to his strong-hold, arc, as it appears from to-day's dispatches, to be treated with lenieDcy, while Jack himself and those'who stood faithfully by his fortunes, will be tritd by a Mili tary Commission, which is but another name for- a Court Martial. The Commission has already been organized mJ will soon enter upon its work. The trjal will be short, sharp and decisive Jack and his com rades will be found uuilty of course, and then his late will depend uporrthe Pres ident. Military Commissions are always or gan 5 zud to convict, and as Jack's case presents some stronger points than poor Mrs. Sur attV, we all know what the verdict will be in advance. , Many ot the ablest papers in the land have taken issue Viith Attorney General Williams, and deny the authority of the Government to organize a Military Com mission to try the Modocs. Therefore, if Jack is convicted and sentenced we trust he will sue out a writ of Uaheas Corpus and try the le-aliiy of the mil itary Court. " And if the neighbors of these men uphold their detestable deed, the extermination of white frontiersmen will become a far more necessary and desirable end than the extermination of Indian murderers." ADVANCE SHEET OF "OUR LIV ING AND OUR DEAD." 'We acknowledge the receipt of a copy of the advance sheet of "Our Living and Our Dead-" lrom which we learn that the first regular issue ot the publication will appear July the first. The first issue will contain some me morial verses, a sketch of John W. Ellis North Carolina's first war Governor,In troductory Sketches of the Causes which brought on the War, Chronological JRe cord of Events from January 1st, 1861, to May 20th, 1871, Anecdotes of Officers and Men, and Editorial Summary. We make the following extract from the "Editorial Explanation and Appeal" in the advance sheet before us: "Before a nobler auditory than listened to iEneas, the editor ot Our Living and Our Dead appears this day, impelled by filial duty to his mother, North Caro lina, to commence the recital of the heroic deeds of her sons in a struggle second to none in tha annals of history or on the glowing pages of the poet. He, too, might exclaim, 4A sense of ob ligation to thee, O North Carolina, and to thy brave sons, forces me to revive great sorrow to tell oi immense sacri fices,' of heroic struggles and brilliant victories, won in vain, against over whelming odds, of thousands slam, or niaimed in useless attempts to secure rights of individuals and of. States, ol bravery -unparalleled, and of 'suf ferings uutqualed all to. end in disaster and defeat, and in the loss of everything for which they bled and died." As the memory of Eneas recalled the great achievements of his com pttrots, national pride thrilled -everv fibre of his soul, and thoughhe knew that the heroic deeds be (ecounted, culminated only in ruin and death, yet exultingly he proclaimed those defds while the listening Queen and noble Carthaginians applauded the actions of those.whom he extolled. As, from time to time, the editor, in nlain. nnvamish. ed pfose, shall recall the virtues ano' th" htrism of ti e gallant men who dl d for North Caroli-iaon a hundred battle Conscjentious!y, he knows, and iaith- fully, he trusts, the work shall be done. Intentionally, no scene shall be over- arawu, no picture too uigniy cuioieu, no skirmish or battle untruthfully des cribed. Justice to North Carolina sol" tilers demands only a plain statement oi actual occurrences. Embellishments am nnrcsrv. and falsehoods are not required to bolster up doubtful reputa- - ti0ns.
