Gentlemen, you can only un derstand the character of this man when we shall h a v presented to you these Jet- ters. Iu them you shall find motive and cause ! enough for the act of this- i young man in . taking off: the lite not of the father. though; lather he was, but ot the oppressor and tyrant. I cannot des cribe this father in better shape ' than that he was a falsiner of all manhood and truth, a cruel parent and a false husband, who violated all the sanctities of domestic life, who torgot or. ignored all the proprieties of home and family, who disregarded every obligation to those who should have looked to him for kind'and paternal care. You can imagine the natural result of such! treat ment of a - parent towards his family. I verily, believe that if he had himself carried into execution any of the mur derous threats with' which his letters were fillechand were put upon trial for homicide theTe is not a court or jury in the land that would not have pronounc ed him'mad. You could only say that he was a very devil in himself and sent by the arch fiend to persecute his wile and children. ' From" the time of his father's death he rarely lived with his family. In 1870 Mrs. Walworth- came to New York, and lor a brief period resided with him in a house? in which her mother and his stepmother had . a life interest.' -What- she suffered during that time no tongue can tell. The wile of tbr Bon of the 'great Chancellor Walworth, herself sprung from a race of which she might well be proud cultivated and accomplished, nurtured in comfort and comparative luxury that wile and mother, neglected and forsaken, was exposed to want; night after night competed to sit in her lone and desolate home without natural support0! present this picture to you, gentlemen,' to show you the sort of life this lady' was kTrced to lead and to enable you to judge of the natural effect which such family associations -would have uptfh the mind of a young and impressive boy. During these events he was a mere child, but as. his grew Up he too clearly estimated a father's neglect' and a husband's ill treatment ; and as'he became-older and as he stands before you to-day, he constituted him,. self the protector of his mother and the avenger of her Wrongs. During all these 'years letters were continually addressed to the family by the de ceased, fraught with ;the most malig nant; threats and breathing the foulest language and profanity.' This eon and this mother lived in continual fear and terrorof those threats and in daily ap prehension of their fulfilment. Gen Hp. men 61 'the jury, look hponthe prisoner and you will see in him one whose young me nas peen oppressed, and whose youthful hopes have ' been blighted in the very bud. Instead of a youth ani mated witn tne aspirations natural to nis age, looKing torward to a career of honorable distinction.worthy of the two races iromwmcn he springs, he presents before you a moody, silent and abstrac ted look, bearing and demeanor, which not all the love and fond devotion of a mother has' ever changed. There was no malice in his heart against his father no revengeful feelings to 'satisfy be yond such as were aroused by the wrongs inflicted on his mother. It was charged that he came to this city pre meditating the act which he perpetrated. Gentlemen, this is not so. He came here with some sort ot a hope that he could have induced his father to cease his per secution ot his mother, while he with his uncle would have made a trip to Europe.
