The Rescue Fire and the Hook and Ladder Companies of lhs city re turned home yesterday morning from Charlotte. The members without exceptiou express themsel ves as having had a spleudid time. Hornets nests were a conspicuous feature everywhere at the Char lotte celebration, and they were the biggest of the kind. The warlike insects seem to have been preparing for the show, judging frini the alze of their habitations. We were shown by Mr. Theo. Snow a basket of flue strawberries of theJucunda variety. They are far the finest in size we have i.n this year. Mr. Snow's crop was much shortened by the frost, but he seems to make up in quality what la lost in quantity. The Junior Ora tors will speak Tuesday night instead of Wednesday night. We gladly comply with the request of our correspondent to correct these errors which are not our own. There is much feeliug here on the subject of the painful and calamitous accidents to two of the members of the Raleigh Artillery at Charlotte. It is charged that the guns furnished by the War Department were con demned pieces, and were turned over to a Southern Company because no other use could be made of them. If so.the Head of the Department deser ves himself to be blown from the mouth of the gun for so wantonly en dangering the lives of others. Reports after such occurrences are very easly circulated and find ready credence. Perhaps injustice is done. but the Company will sift the matter 1 to the bottom. Person Street Ciiiucii. Much comment has been occasioned by the order ot the Board of Aldermen declining to receive city scrip in payment for taxes, as such has hitherto been done. We have inquired into the reasons actuating the new Board In taking this step. The city finances are by no means in a healthy condition indeed, it is thought there is enough floating scrip oat to absorb all the taxes that maybe levied the present year, which If taken up will leave the Board without the means to commence the work ; of reform, and this step is taken , in' order to give them a breathing spell and to give the Finance Committee an opportunity to ascertain the fuH in debtedness of the city, .to, arrange for Its adjustment by being funded or otherwise, and thus to place tbe credit of the city once again at par. It is the Intention of the Committee to go to work at once in the matter of arranging the floating debt of our city, and we know the people of Raleigh will sustain them in this ef fort. GOV. BROODKN IN CH ARLOfTE. Gov. Brogden was a participant in the Mecklenburg Centennial cele bration, and on Wednesday, at the hoisting of the centennial flag, he responded to a call upon him. We make the following extract from the closing remarks of his speech: In contemplating the object of the occasion for which we are assembled, we may appropriately allude to the growth and progress of our country under the benign Influence of the great principles of civil and religious liberty then proclaimed. Our country has increased in population, wealth and power beyond all precedent or example. One hundred years ago there were but four or five postofflces in the whole State of North Carolina, now there are neirly nine hundred, Oue hundrHl years ago there was no application of steam to the useful and Industrial arts and sciences, now steam is used to run nearly all kinds of Machinery. One hundred years ago there were no railroads in this State or in the whole country, now there are nearly twelve hundred miles of railroads in successful epera tion iu our State alone. One hun dred years ago the profound and use ful bsnetits we now derive from the magic use of the magnetic telegraph slept securely in the bosom of nature, antl it was reserved to human inge nuity in the century in which we live to discover antl utilize the electricity which, until car time, had no 'applied use. The prin ciple proclaimed from the steps of the little log corthonse on this spot one hundred years ago." still live in all their original strength and power, while the illus trious patriots who proclaimed them have long since passed away, and of her generations have succeeded them, thus testifying that while principles are eternal the flight of time is increasing. Alas! how swift the moments fly! How flash th9 years along, Ac. It is my pleasure as the highest executive officer iu the State of North Carolina to extend a -Ulcere and cordial invitation to all citizens of other States who have come here to join with us in com memorating the memory of the pat riots of Mecklenburg, who proclaim ed the liberty antl independence which we now enjoy. The flag of our couutry which floats proudly over us is the emblem of our appre ciation of those principles which se cure protection to eery American citizen at home and abroad, on land and at sea, and in every country throughout the world. If wo are true to the principles proclaimed by our forefathers and which we have met here to celebrate, which guaran tees the rights of people and rights of the individual States, they will stand as some Tall cliff that reared Its awful form. The Correspondent of the New York tlterald, la his account of the Char lotte celebration, pays the following tribute to the character of a Southern irowd. It confirms fully what we liave already asserted on the subject : .'."The complete good order and so briety maintained by this immense assemblage strikes me as something remarkable in a country which is uppo9ed to require the presence of aroops to keep the eace. I saw but ifew policemen, constables or similar 'officers, and no arrests. This volun tary good behavior on the part of so great body of people, of ail sorts and conditions nod of both races, is a significant exhibitiou of that peculi arly American, trait of self-government which may be said to consti tute the noblest feature of our democratic-republican autonomy. Such 41 people need no rulers but them selves. They'realize the greatness which, we are told, is superior to him that "taketh a city." No dis turbance or affray or other untoward Incident has marred the pacific cur rent of the observance." From the Wilson Plalndeater. Thefetate Medical Convention. The N. C. These gentlemen have re cently received diplomas from Medi cal Colleges, but we are informed that in consideration of the thor oughness of their more receAt exam ination they regard their certificate from the Examiners of the N, C. Medical Society as of more value, that is affording better evidence of their being qualified to practice med icine, than their Diplomas received from the learned Professors of Medi cal Colleges. Interesting papers concerning cases treated were read by Drs. Woed Duffy, Ennett and others. Fayetteville was selected as the next plce for the meeting of tbe Society on the first Wednesday in May, 1876, and Society adjourned. Moral Principle and Integri ty in Business Required and En forced by Judicial Decision. The practice of manufacturing and palming off upon the public by means of false labels and trademarks a spurious imitation of some deserv edly popular article of general con sumption, successfully practiced by many persons who claim to be repu table business men, has been judi cially held by the Supreme Court of this State to be a fraud, and coming within the category of "false and fraudulent representations." This class of frauds is very common in this country, and should not go un punished. We are pleased to know that the courts of this State have, by a decision in the case of Lea A Perrins vs. Julius Wolf and another, put a restraint upon that class of frauds. The plaintiffs are the man ufacturers of the well-known "Wor cestershire Sauce ;" the defendants were the makers of a spurious imi tation of the same, aud to which they also gave the name "Worces tershire Sauce" as a trade mark. The Subreme Court have decided that the adoption uf that name is a fraud upon the public, and have restrained the defendants, by in junction from its use. The firm of John Duncan's Son's of this city, who are the agents of Messrs Lea A Perrins in the United States, cer tainly deserve public commendation for their persistent and finally suc cessful ettort in procuring from our court a decision which will, if vigor ously enforced, protect the public from this as also from a variety of similar fraudulent impositions. In some of the States this rule of moral ity is enforced by ex press statute, and punished as such. The principal jso enunciated, however.is sustained by the "common law," which prevails in all the States of the Union, with one or two exceptions. Netv York Times. What toe Nkrvous Rfquirk.
