The Daily Constitu tion, of this city, which is being thrown broadcast over the State in the Radical endeavor to overcome the eltbrt of the people to have an honest government, is Under the immediate control of a carpet-bagger, the Chair man of the Central, Executive Com mittee, and is locally uuder the man agement of a negro. ,, White meu of North Carolina, those who love its once time-honored in stitutions, think of this thing, aud rebuke this party ou the 5th of Au gust. A celebrated French sporting gen tleman is in the hubit of entering two of his horses in the same race and of winning always with the horse less favored in the betting. The gentleman was at last irritated by his impunity, and said: " IFhy do you wish, my eyesight to be preserved ? Nothing ails my eye sight, nor Is likely to do." "No, your honor." said the beggar, "but It will be a sad thing if it does, for you will have no Jilng to rest your spectacles upon." JULY 30, 1875. ; A Brilliant Specimen of Radi cal Eloquence A Verbatim Re port op a Speech of a Wake County Radical Candidate. We publish for the informaUou of the genernl public, and particularly for the benefit of the people of Wake, the following verbatim report of the speech of Madiwn Hodge, one of the Radical Convention candidates from tliis'county, made at Rolesvllle on Wednesday, aud which is about the same speech made by him every day when he is sufficiently sober to make any at all : FelUr Citizens I am agin a Qot vention, I am agin a Convention' what in the h 1 do'you want with a Convention? You own .a .Conven tion and a Legislator too, and you have changed your Constitution 8 times already, aud I'll be d--d If you knoWed it. Now by God, you want to change it again and ail go to h 1. Old Hodge won't go there he's got plenty of money and it ca'ti't hurt him. (Here he was interrupted by Archie Cawthorn, a fellow Repub licau, wi,tht ?'Yev you have got plenty of it ami you are as mean us h 1 with it.") Now. feller-citizens, all these feller talk about civil rights what in the h 1 is civil rights, did you over pay taxes ou civil rights; now take that home and think about it.'" I have traveled all the way from r Maine to Texas and never seed a niygeriun lirst class car. Now, I hain't got time to tell any more about this foolishness. Now these Democ rat men talk to me about adjourning. Now I ain't gwine to tell you what I'eni gwine to do. " Did you ever hear tell of a man building up all of his fence case his gap was down, and now yon want to make a con stitution and go to It 1 if you do it. I have told you all I knuwed about this foolishness. I want you to. take what I have said home with you. I could uro on and talk for two hours just the same way I have been telling you. I have been giving you tho soundest doctrine has been preached here to-day, ami' thank you for your :tt enliou. And this Is the kind of men Rad icalism would foist upon the people of North Carolina to niakea constitu tion for honest and decent men to live under ! An A ppenl fom an O'd Farmer, The following appeal "to his Dem ocratic friends," from an old farmer of this county, we give place to with pleasure : "Will you permit an old farmer, forty 3'ears a voter, and who has al ways observed closely and felt a deep interest -in the acts of the political parties or' the country, (but never a candidate for office,) to address my fellow citizens, to advise them by all thev hold dear on earth, their liberty, their mothers their sisters, wives, children and property, to arouse from their lethargy and come forward like true patriots in theouegreataudper haps last struggle for liberty and free government, and cast their vote on tlie."thof August for Democratic del egates to the ton vention. If the so called Republican get the power in tiie Convention by your indifference you will then be entirely at the mercy of the ntguww. -One fact wil prove it. You reuu-niber the vote for Superintendent of Public Schools the past year, which was conceded to be the strength of the Democrat and Republican parties iu the State. Pool received the vote of 98,000 white niu, Puruell the vote of 80,000 ne groes and only 4.200 white votes. Now is it possible that any Democrat can be so blind as not to see that 80.0 K) negro voters will not be governed by 4.000 white voters. The negroes will till all the offices in the Stale and uutkfe their white allies take suci etiy offices as they are pleused to give them. .If the negro parly gets Ihe power again they will make a Constitution that we shall never he aMe to overthrow. Our .property will then be sold for taxes to raise money for the greedy and corrupt office holders, and to educate the blacks at l he exiwnse of the white nieu of the Stal. These and ten thousand untold evils will come upon the white people, of the State it you refuse or neglect to vote the Democratic ticket on the 5th of August. This, my friends, is no faucy pic ture. You will find it a reality if you neglect your duty to your coun try. K. A strange affair, happened a few days ago at the Hotel Kong Carl, in Chrlstiania, Norway. Two Ger mans, brothers, arrived by the steam er at Chrisliania, and took apait nien sin the Hotel Kong Carl. In the middle of the night a terrible noise was heard in the room occupi ed by .the two brothers ; . chairs, ta bles, aiid other furniture were thrown about, and some even out of the win dows. The. other lodgers rushed to the room, yv hen the door was sud denly opeued, and one of. the Ger mans, armed with a polguard, struck the nearest gentleman a fearful blow in the abdomen, after which he closed the door again. The noise lasted u few minutes longer and then all be came quiet. When the ik1 ice enter ed shortly afterwards both brothers were found 'dead, 'with their throats cut, t lie elder having first murdered the y.mngrr' one and then cut his own throat. About 90 in Prussian money was found in their possesion, and according to the information re cieved from Germany, this money is a part of the' proceeds of a robbery ef fected shortly before their departure from Lubeefc. The Mercantile Agency , of rDun, Barlow A Co., Which possesses excel lent facilities for learning the condi tion of the business interests, reports the total number of failures through out the United States during the first half of the current year to have been, 3.377, with liabilities amounting to $74,940,000. This is not a large num ber, out of over 350,000 business houses, when we consider the pro- ' longed period of depression in trade and general industry. Indeed the , liabilities are less in amount than for six months in 1874 $2,675,000 and less than for the six months of 1873, $3?,308,000 though thenumbi r of the suspensions is greater than in either of. the two preceding- years. The amount of liabiities Is only $1,4, 412,000 larger than in same period in 1872, in the antepanic times. While this is a matter . or congratulation, there is still cause for apprehension that all these months are passing, not only with very little money . be- ; ibg made in business but with profits insufficient to meet! expenses' Incu:- red iu a great majority of instances. There is need of still further re trenchment in the1 expenses of busi ness. It may he "some consolation, howevec, to have the assurance that though trade is in a bad state, here It 1 is really no worse than it is in some of the leading countries of Europe, On this point the Agency affords tes-: timony which fully corroborates that which we. have frequently, given from the best publications oh' the other sidepf the Atlantic. Thus wo are told that the liabilities of parties who have failed in London, Leeds and Manchester, England, alone during the last ninety days reach the enormons aggregate of over $100, 000,00025 per cent more than the liabilities involved in the failures in this country in double the- time. In Canada the failures amount to over 800 with liabilities of over $12,000,000. These figures serve a purpose not only in teaching us that we are not singled out for adversity, but in prov ing that the real explanation of the existing nfTairs must be. looked for outside of local and limited causes. The outlook for the'future however, the Agency regards as being, on the whole, encouraging. The reports from all the chief centres Of trade, de rived from most reliable sources in each locality, indicate much that is encouraging. Whatever an abun dant agricultural product will accom plish toward a restoration of prosper ity will certainly this year be con tributed. The purchasing and the debt-paying power of the people in vast sections of the country will be improved, while considerable activi ty must be provoked during the au tumu iu replenishing the small stocks of merchandise held in all hands. N. Y. Grocery and Provis ion Review of 2fith July. Kissing the Royal Babies' Toes. In London, a long time ago, I used to know the nurse of the Queen's babies an excellert, good person, clean and fat and rosy and loving. It might occur to the unini tiated that this person perhaps was a gentle woman, and that the Queen's babies had real ladies as nurses. But it was not so. This royal nurse was but another Peggotty, as humble in station as the good woman who was selected to care for the sacred welfare of the heir of Dombey. ' One day we congratulated her on the excellence e 4er ' place. "That it is. indeed ma'am, a good place," replied , the- woman, warmly; "too good for, the likes of me; and yet," said she, her motherly bosom swelling and warm tears gushing to her honest eyes, 'it has one great trial I am not hal lowed to kiss the children. Being royal 'ighnesses and mean 'reling, I am not hallowed; and w'en you love a baby, not to be liable to kiss 'im is ard; but" and here she brightened up considerably "I don't mind tel liug you, ma'm, for I don't think it will go any further, though borders Is horders, they can't prevent me from a-kissin' of his little toes." Olice Lagan in Graphic. Grant Did Request Delano to Resign. A 'Washington special, un der date of the 27th, says: Notwithstanding statements to the contrary from any quarters it is reit erated here to-night, and not speci fically denied by" Mr. Delano him self, that President Grant did recent ly request; in writing, Secretary Delano's resignation, and- to which for reasons know only to the parties involved, he has not yet replied. It may further be said that ' Mr. Delano is urged hy personal friends to retire from the Cabinet, snd thus prevent the possibility, of an unpleas antness with his Cabinet colleagues, which is likely to arise at the next meeting of its members, thereby creating a scandal which cannot but redound to the injury of the political party with which he is affiliated. A traveller, wjio has just returned from the Atlas Mountains, in Al geria, thinks, thinks that region has the most multitudinous wild flowers, the most wonderful ruins, and the most beautiful women in the world. He sai's: "I never saw beautiful Wo men with perfectly classic features showing unmistakably their Roman descent. Is ;jt not curious that they have nearly the same names for the months as we have?
