Its faculty cannot be surpassed any where for eruditioir and their adapta tion to their calling, and owing to the Christianizing influences brought to bear the good order and, decorum, which prevails among so large a col lection of young men. (readily ap parent) is really remarkable. The event of to day has been the regular declamation exercises of tbe Junior and Senior cla-ses. I say event. These regularly re curring events are looked lorward 10 with as much interest by lads and lassies, by the old ami young out here as that manifested by the boys in Raleigh, doubtless to night over the coming in your city of Cole's circus on the morrow. On these occasions the Collegians, speakers and all don their "biled shirts," roach their hair, and look wise, while the young ladies of the village put up their hair in papers ti e uight before, don their beat jew elry and look pretty. It was the good fortune of your cor respoudent to be present at these ex erCises to-day and ninht. aud he gives you below a synopsis of the proceed ings. His speech abounded in beautiful metaphors, and the appli cation of his theme was apropos. Mr. Powers prescribed as remedies for the evils of the day, viz: Pagan ism, irreligion and corruption gener ally, education and the spread of. evangelical Christianity. Mr. P. is a forcible speaker, and his 8iH.'ecb evinced both research and the jsower to grasp its results. Mr. Rritt delivered a dignified ad dress, and in addition to the high merit of the address itself, excelled in appropriate gesticulation. Mr. Bland drew a comparison be tween the past and present of our Re public.not very complimentary U the present, but predicting a triumph of virtueover vice, aud a brilliant future for thecountry. The gesticulation of this gentleman was also good.
