This Com pany, which comes to us so highly recommended by the press of both the North and South, will make its first appearance at Tucker Hall to night. The troupe is said to be the best the talented artistes, the Holman Bisters, have ever presented to the public. The Chicago Inter-Ocean, referring to their performances in that city, says: "There was a large and fashionable audience at the Academy of Music last night to witness the representa tion of the Grand Duchess by the Holman Opera Troupe, and we have no hesitation in pronouncing the performance a thorough success. First, for little Miss Bailie. We have seen the great Tostee a number of times as La Grande Duchess ; we have also seen Mrs. Oatesln the same role, and while it would be fulsome flattery to say that Miss allieHo man Is in all respects equal to Tostee, we really think her decidedly supe rior to Mrs. Oates, and throughout the opera, but particularly in the courting scene with Fritz, she was very charming. In regard to Miss Sallie's singing, Mrs. Oates may probably have a slight advantage in the lower register, but in the upper register, Miss Holman far excels her rival, and the sweetness and flexibil ity of her voice is equalled by its power. She made her greatest hits in "Dites Lui," "Le Sabre de mon Pere," and the "Drinking Song," all of which were warmly encored. In fact, the pretty little lady bird was most enthusiastically received, and was called before the curtain at the end. of the first and third sets. In tbe Fritz of Mr. Brandisi, the singing was excellent. He has a clear, sweet tenor voice, and his ren dition of the "Marseillaise" well de served the warm applause with which It was greeted aud encored. Mr. Ryse is a good basso, and sung capitally. Mr. A. D. Holman played Baron Puck exceedingly well. Mr. Barton's Paul was an even and artistic performance, and his basso arcondi voice was much admired." The "Grand Duchess" will be played to-night. Reserved seats can be obtained at Carmer's drug store up to 0 o'clock p. m. Thanksoivino Day. To-morrow, the 2-j.h, will be generally ob served throughout the United States as a day of Thanksgiving, in obe dience to the proclamation to this ef fect from President Grant. The peo ple of different sections of thecountry will observe the day from different causes many as only a holiday, while others will he thankful for the actual blessings attendant even upon the hard times that prevail frooa one end of the land to the other. Never theless, the day will be a common one in its observance, and the whole Ameiican people on this occasion meet at one threshold that of the Giver of all good gifts, laying aside for the time being the bickerings of the Klitical and business lite. The Day will be observed by the Daily News, and in consequence no paper will be issued from this office Friday morning. A Raffle. -A splendid parlor mirror with damask curtains accom panying will be raffled off a Joseph's Saloon Saturday night. The mirror is one of the most handsome things of the kind we have ever seen in the city. R. H. The Farmers' Council ol Virginia aud North Carolina. The fourth annual session of the Farmers' Council of Virginia and North Carolina convened in Peters burg yesterday at 12 o'clock. The Jui4x-Appeal of ye&lerday says of it : "The officers of this Association are: Colonel Ed. Dromgoole, of Brunswick county. President; B. J. Rogers, Secretary; Major J.Arthur Johnston, Treasurer, and Dr. J. M. Pleasants, Clerk. "The objects of the Council have been set forth to be the general pro motion of the agricultural interests of the two States. As was well urged by a recent correspondent of this pa per, the missiou of the Council has not been superceded by the establish ment of the Grange in Virginia ; for the work of the Grange is private, while that of the Council is open, and in the nature of a mutual adjustment of questions that affect both producer and consumer. "The sessions of the Council have been heretofore fruitful of valuable and interesting discussions; and they have been attended by some of the most piSjminent agriculturists of the State. The papers that have been read, aud the addresses that have beeu made, before the Council at its previous annual sessions, have been justly regarded as useful contribu tions to agricultural science, and as well worthy of preservation aud study. "It "is hoped that the session that begins 10-day will be attended by no less numerous a body of delegates, and followed by results no less grati fying and substantial. The Secretary lias received no information of changes in tiie personnel of auy of the delegations, and it is supposed that the delegates remain the same this year as at the last session of the Council." As iMPKKOMABi.a Position. Amonu American remed.es, Hostelter's Stomach Bitters occupies what may not luaptly be termed an impregnable position. The foundations ot its popularity are laid so drep in the public confidence, its excel lenci has been so frequently and conclu sively ietnonstrated under the moat try ng circumstances, and it has been so long known lo the public a a standard artlc e, tt-a neither the slurs occasionally cist up on pro'rlenirv medicines, nor the attempts of car kin inalooholic nostrum venders to ereatea prejudice against a preparation with a solrituoos boa La can affect it. Tbe In dustrialist, published at the Kanzas Agricultural College, and edited by um rmuueui aau .f aculty, gives tne following on this plant : For stolidity, persistence and strict attentiou to business, commend us to the plant called alfalfa. Neither drought, chinch bugs nor grasshop pers seem to disturb its serenity. We have 1 acres upon ;the college farm that was seeded April 8. 1875, to alfalfa. To day, June JTtb, tht ground is completely occupied with a dense, even growth of this valuable foragr. From this mass we have se lected plants that measured sixteen, inches above the grounds. The roots broke off at ten inches, and doubtless extended several Inches beyond this I point, ii auaua Ketqp iiagooauaoie during the couxiug season, many acres will be soeded in this viciuity in 1879. Who knows but What the introduction of alfalfa may mark the turning point in our agriculture, juat as the introduction of clover and tnrnips one hundred and fifty years ago, marked a new era iu the agri culture of Great Britian ? Lime vs. Ashes Place a piece of iron or steel in damp ashes, and it will corrode with rusr.. Place the iron or steel m lime mortar, and it will remain bright and the rust will disappear. Sow small grain where a Jog heap or brush pile has beeu burned, or where a liberal dressing of ashes has been applied, and there will be a rank growth that will probably fall and neyer mature. Sow the grain where lime has been applied to the soil, and the grain will grow stout, stiff straw, and plump. hardy heads that mature well. Ashes cause a rank growth of the herbaceous parts of plants, such as leaves, straw aud grass; lime induces the growth of the woody part of plants, and the grain or fruit. Ashes stimulate heavy muck, aud rich or virgin soils. They secern to act es pecially on vegetaole mould and ma nure from the barnyard.1 ! Apply them to the most offensive" pile of compost, and they will render it in odorous and worth ress as a fertilizer, their effect being that of releasing the ammona from the compost. ' Ashes used with a compost heap of decaying vegetable matter would be wasted worse than wasted as they render the compost inert as a fertilizer. Ap plied to an offensive sink, sewer or cesspool, they serve an excellent purpose as a disinfectant. They pro mote the growth of grass and forage especially, proving very valuable on low lands; will stimulate trees, etc., to a vigorous growth when the soil is strong. They exhaust strong soils and injure poor ones. Lime improves poor soil, especial ly sandy ones by rendering them more compact and capable of retain ing fertility when applied. As a promoter of health and vigor in ap ple trees It is" one bf the best applica tions that can be made to the soil. Under its influeuce trees mature well, the fruit is finer, and trees are freer from disease. Lime may be applied with benefit on most soils and many plants, but is of special value to the apple tree and straw berry plant, while ashes are valuable on heavy or rich soils for the grosser feeding of plants such as our native plums and currant bushes. A. L. Hatch in Hot ticuttura list. A Shocking and Fatal Accident A Man Hon Over and Killed A Wo man Knocked Down. A special dispatch to the Peters burg (Va.) Index-Appeal, from Al exandria, under date of Monday, gives tbe following account of a hor rible accident at that place : A shocking and fatal accident oc curred about half-past 7 o'clock last night on the heavy street track of the V. M. R. R. An engine of that road knocked down and backed over Mr. IcCaleb Athey, who was standing upon the track. Mr. Athey and Miss Walker, of Upperville, and Mr. James Johnson and two Misses Lows of this city, were passing down Duke street on their way to the Baptist church, and when at the junction of Henry street their attention was at tracted by the approach of the Balti more and Potomactrain which makes connection with the 8 o'cloek South ern train of the Virginia Midland Railroad. The engine of the Balti more and Potomac train approaebed the spot on th west track, and Mr. Athey stepped on the switch to the east of the track, along which an en gine and tender of the Midland Road was backing. The ladies attempted to call Mr. Athey's attention to the approaching engine, but he was blinded by the glare of the head ligl t on the Baltimore and Potomacengine and confused by the ringing of the bells, did not see or hear the engine which knocked him down. The ten der and engine passed over bim and broke and maugled his legs; the right one above and the left below the knee.
