LCTTERS FROM THE PEOPLE. Raleioh, N. C. Messrs. Editor : I notice that a primer in yesterday' Nws told of Mr. Turner charging 35 cents out of '8) cents for disburoing the State money allowed for type-wetting. That is not all, he takes tbe binding of the State work aud sublets it to I wo other offloes and charges Jhese parties who do the work 25 ver cent. profit which goes Into his (Mr. Tur ner's) pocket. Such a thin ha never been done beore iu Raleigh. When Stone & Uzz.-II (whom Mr. Turner abuses so much) were State Printer?, not having a bindery of their own they let the binding out to be done at the same price the State paid them. This was fair and allow ed the bindery to pay its employes living wages. But Mr. Turner who is noisy in words about his love of the working-men ts avaricious enough to squeeze 25 per cent, profit f aiiripiv letting somebody else d tnewoik. This logs of coure fal 0.1 the employes and the profit goes into Mr. Turner's pocket. The work ing men of Raleigh are not for him. One of Them. "Sadie la Boss.' The Jackson (Tenn.) Sun relates the following Sunday-School inci dent : In a Sunday-school in this city re cently a friend of the cause from Ba denahurg was introduced, who after losing his way in the exordium of his remarks, rose ou his toes, closed eves ami proceeded to address the children as follows : "Once upon a time, my little iambs, there were two little girls, one named Sadie and one named Mollie, and Mollie was a good liule girl who used to save up all her pennies for the Sunday-School, and learned plenty of verses, and never mes-ed her drese, and was such a comfort to her mother you can't think. And Sad.e was a car el t-ss lit tle girl; she never wept for the hea lieu, and sae yawned in church and usedu't to care where she was going to when she died. Dear chil dren, you ought always to remem ber that. 80 one day their great uncle Peter, after whom they were both named, came to see them, and gave them each a uew filty ceut sninpUster. So Mollie took her fiftv cents to the Sundy-school and pot it in the box to buy tracts for the heathen children that couldn't reau: And so it happened that the wicked heathen chief caught and kille I a misiouary and was about to roasr him, aud wheu tbe heathen chief went to light the fire in the cooking stove, he took one of these very tracts to do it with, aud read the contents, and be and all the tribes were con verted. So you see how much good you can sometimes do with a very little money. But Sadie went ous by hers-lf, and took her fifty cents and bought with it whak do you think she bought with it? Well. I will tell you. She bought some oranges and some fica, and some mo lasses candy -With some great, big split almonds in it here an unregen erated fat boy In Miss vVafren's class hugged himself 1 1 rapture aud pass ed bis tongue arouud his ears, arid a doll whose eyes would opeu and shut, and a transparent slate, and a picture book, and a prize package; aud she went home aud locked up in a parlor, and ate them all up. As the testimony had been kept secret the " announcement'" fell upon the House and spectators 'With re doubled force and during therreadirrg of the damning tacts every ear was strained to catch every word, and atritconcIasion a settled clond rested tipori" '-the count nances of the Radicals who appeared to think that the dayof judgmeWtfiad Terily o v v i mr rwY Rlaina'a S war of Kr w fln taJ.n nrr" looked even more diabolical" than when flaunting hisbloodv shirt doctrines before1 the House. He leaned over on bis" desk with his head bowed on his hands and nervously chewed - away at Something' with a vieor and earnestness remarkable even for him, but otherwise be opened not his mouth. " The evidence was so overwhelming that no one dared attempt any defence except that Hoar, of Mass.. and Kas- son, of Iowa, contended that Belknap' V 1 1 , - .. A naving tenaerea nis resignation auring the dav and before the case could be b oueht before the Houe he was no longer a . officer and could not be impeached. After speeches from Aessrs. Clymer, Bobbins, of N. C, Blackburn and the other members of the committee the reso lution was passed unanimously and the committee directed to present articles of imp achment to the benate. " 1 The action of the rVeiidem1? ' accept ing the resignatiort: of the Heeretar'y is severely condemned as it may have the effect if it was not so intended to give some color to the tecHnieal objection that has already been raised by Hoar that Belknap cannot be impeached as he i no longer an officer, but this idea any one can see would have the effect of making the impeachment of any officer practical ly impossible. But- a the sickening de tails of this outgrowth of a. corrupt ad-, ministration will doubtless reach you by telegraph before you receive this . hasty note I shall not go into it further, than? to say that even still more startling de velopments may be expected sopn in this and other departments. ... . The oommittee investigating the affairs in the Postoffice Department have had before theni your late fellow-citizen the pious Capt. J. G. Hester of the Y- M. C. Association, who was appointed by the Post Master General as a sort of roving special agent at a salary of $l,60u) per; annum and $5.00 per daj-j and who claimed payment of $15.00 per day for 87 days, this modest bill . being according to his sworn testimony, for 'IrLskL pf bfe, crea; nerve, nower and ejcDenseiof .brain. power." The committee expect io show. that the extra allowances .xaade to aim over and above the. , regular pay of a special agent were made in, violation of law and tor the purpose, of securing jthe election of Representative Hayes, of Ala bama. , ,. ,., , , . Babcock is still oa hand, but will, doubt-; less, according to custom,. soon receive his little certificate of cbaraoter from the President, and seek a situation ia siime vast contiguity ot shade where be can. re flect upon the -pleasures of a well-spent life, and a somewhat narrow escape from sharing the fate of his friends, McDonald' and Joyce, in the penitentiary. . , The Pinchbeck case is -again up in the Senate and Senator Edmunds was. ex pected to address the Senate to-day io op- E os i lion to his admission, but the Senator aving heard the news concerning Belk nap, he expressed himself. -as, too unwell to speak to-day and the case went oyer. , We had a slight show last night which disappeared very rapidly, and afforded no sort of amusement in the way of sleigh-, ing, and indeed the winter has been so remarkably warm here that the merry, music of the sleigh bells has not been, heard but for ne short day during the season. , : , .- . Messrs. Hammond and Bendy, tbe evangebsts,. . are still preaching every night to an. audience numbering about 2,500, and the interest manifest i some thing quite remakable for Washington, as this ten, miles. square i becoming more celebrated for, corruption. and atealings thHn for any special developments of piety.
