Notwithstaudins the above fact, it is charired by honizry office seekers aeainst the present State government, that it is grind ing the people down by ntreecessary taxa tion. Mo government can be supported more cheaply. We bare repeatedly denied the statement, made by certain tratort in the Qenersl Assembly, that there will be a large surplus of money in the Treasury. The $300,000, raised in the Fall of 1807, is to support the State government, nntil the 1st. of Oct. 1868 The orators aforesaid blundered by adding $300,000 more to be collected in the Fall of lb89, being unable to understand that this latter sum must be applied to the expense of the year ending 1st. of January 1849. It is fortunate those orators did not fill Mr. Battle's place, aa, according to their schemes, for one-half of the year the Treasury would hsve been as dry as the Desert ol Sahara. PUBLIC TAXES. Qtir attention is called to a typographical Wfof lis otif editorial of jesterdxy, headed "Poblie Taxes." Ia tbe last sentence but one, "1st.
