THE SENTINEL. JOSIAH TURNER, Jr, Editor. , T. B. EIN08BUBT. Associate Editor Wdkiui Mokhino, Auoist, v:7, 1ST.:. THKMSCKLBSBURO Z.-C(70.V. W publitb fourth article t" Jay from the pen o( Mr. Ooodloc. Id a day at two aaiMtxc one will follow which com pic tea tb discussion on his sile. The t)e W baJ bd to fire to the ditrftts li.m U jitttti than we were led to ex pect in tu beginning. But we do not regret ttia time and space devoted tci tbe investicjstioD, and are willing trial others tbould be beard if they have anything new to tell. We know tbat mauy ot the mutt highly educated inJ iutclligi nt ol our rder arc taking a ixculiar interest in tbe discussion which ha bem con ducted with dignity, courtesy and ulmity. A distiDgolabetl gentleman wrote to il the other day requesting u to pmc. rve ail tbe paper lor him containing matter bearing upon tbe Mecklenburg Declara tion, aUting he waa greatly intrctcd, and might possibly bare aomelhing to aaf iabca the iutollcctual combatanU now engaged had completed tbeir arguments. Tbe Aieoclete editor of tbe tENTiNki. it alone retpoDsible for tbe introduction of the diacusaion into tbia paper, the Editor having nothing whatever to do with it. Mr. Ooodloe be bad kuonu frjm bit eai ly boyhood, and is glad to number hint among thoee friends who ''by adoption tried," he haa ever lound high-toned, hon orable, and independent in hi thinking. Mr. Goodloe asked to lio heard through the SknTINRX that he might discus the merit! ol the 20th May Declaration. , f!.i .JfcA i! tious discussion never yet injurud urfoufr- Jy the fmA,we tpld Mr. Goodloe that t'je columns were open to him for a brief article or two, with the understanding that the ether aide should have a hearing rT have hitherto published three articles on cither tide. Maj. Dowd will be heard in reply if be to desires and other gentle men who may with to review the discus lion. Hence we wrote an editorial in the beginning, headed "Avdi alteram jntrten, '' Of course e could not anticipate all the bearingi of the investigation. At fint, wc are candid enough to state, when we had only read Mr. Ooodloe's three arti cle, we were satisfied that he had made oat bis case. We arc equally candid to confess now.that Maj Dowd's articles have so shaken our fir9t conviction that we are compelled to auspend our judgment. We ahall await the issue, and tii-'n re-ieading tba whole controversy, including all that haa been laid by Dr. Uawkt and other writer, or that niay be said bereaUr, we shall then form an opinion. As before stated, we only desire to Mine the truth, and no conscientious man can desire to believe any thing else. Nothing so hurU as falsehood. One of tbe greatest :ind asoat original thiukers of this century, Thomas Carlyle, aays: u A li should ba trampled on and ex tinguiahed wherever fiund. J am for fumigating the atmosphere when I sus pect that falsehood, like pestilence, breaths around me." Desiring then sincerely to hold the troth in every thiug, we mean to investi gate this matter for our own satisfaction. Born in Raleigh, receiving whatever of edncatioa we may have at our leading schools and at our, now alas, defunct University, and residing all our days with tbe exception of soum few months, within the Btate.we are as thoroughly North Caro Imiaa as it is healthful to be. We have on a dosea occasions, and in six or seven papers, defended and upheld the good and glorious name of North Carolina. But in this discussion we do not consider oar patriotism or State pride in tbe least Involved. Our State has a grand record that it above all research and all slander. We were in advance of all other States whether the final virdict of history be for or against the 20th May, for the resolu tions of lit May, 1773, remain, undispu tuted and indisputable. But even, though our State pride was appealed to, it we be such as the great poet Laureate, of Eng land, Alfred Tennjson, describes tbe Duke of Wellington, then truth will be dearer to us than even love of State can bo. " Who Kteer sold (As tnttA to tret tin kaurr "Trnth-teller was our England's Alfred named : Trulk low was our English Duke." We make tbeae remarks, because we have noted a disposition to attack Mr. Uoorl lot's motives (and pouibly our eim,) for publishing his elaborate and able ar ticle. He too is a native North Caro linian, and we doubt not holds the honor of the State a dearly as any who may aeaail bia motives or qu stion Lia State pride.
