We hop that the President of our State Society will at once follow suit. ' Noth ing more commend itself to our people at pres ent than efforts to revive and re-establish the great cause of agriculture. The Becent New England Election. In view of the ridiculous hullabaloo which has been made by the Radicals over the result of the recent local contest in Maine and Ver mont, we submit to our readers the following very sensible comment on those elections from the St Loots Republican .' ' "The elections in Vermont and Maine have resulted in favor of the Radical. The Radicals ' throughout the country are jubilant and hope ful," accepting the result in these State a IridT-' cation of the "way the cat will jump" in all the State in October and November. These parties accept as indications and omen of triumph, that which is no prophetic sign at all. Nothing in the world, one way or the other,' can be inferred from an election in Vermont or Maine, so tar as the general result is concerned. Students of political staOsifca know" this very well. In 1856, in the memor&hle contest be tween Buchanan and Fremont, Maine and Ver mont both gave increased Republican majori ties in September, and the Fremont party jelled itself boars with shout of triumph over the re sult, just at the Radical or doing now. But the elections in October and November in 1836 npaet all their calculations, and disappointed their hopes based oa the" Vermont ana Maine vote, the great Central State rolling up their votes for Buchanan, and overwhelming Fremont with defeat i s ; s . In 186S, we saw a similar spectacle. It was generally believed that a revolution in public sentiment had changed the relation of parties, and that the : fall election would bring the Democrat into the ascendant Th elec tion came off la Vermont, and the result ex hibited the tide of sentiment still running in tbo old channel, s . i : 1 ' The Radical carried the State, and their par ty, from Boston to San Francisco, was crazy with delight But in October and November the Democracy achieved an overwhelming vic tory from New York to Missouri. It will be so again in this Jear, 1868. The Radicals have really do foundation for hope, and the Conser vative none for discouragement, in the election in the two New England States named, since they are no indication whatever of popular sen timent elsewhere. No on is surprised' by the result It' waa fully expected, just as it i fully expected and conceded that Massachusetts will be carried by a large Radical majority, t There has always been in the two State, Vermont and Maine, a singular isolation from the influences producing revolutions in opinion In other States, They steadily adhere to old creeds, uninfluenced by the strong tides (weeping away the foundation of parties elsewhere.. Every Radical politician know this, and when we see th Radicals ela ted to the skies by the victories in those State, reading in them a promise ol general triumph, it is a proof of their willingness to catch at straw liW a drowning man." rv One of the coolest ami most infamous in stances of the sacrifice of the Interests of a peo pie to those of a political clique may be read in the "report of the proceedings of the City Council of Baltimore. An ordinance appropri ating very nearly one hundred thousand dollars to the building of a hall over the Lexington market wa adopted, with the following pro viso : "No bids shall be received or entertained from any party or parties who are not known to be thoroughly and unconditionally loyal men.? . . i v .' ' Botts has been writing up "The Great Rebel lion : Iu Secret History, Bias, Progreas," and from the tact that the title also incluUe "It Disastrous failure,' we opine that the work, which is in piW refer to the recent attempt to get up a Radical revolution in Louisiana, and to J tbe late ana leeuier nzai in -nuaqeipuia.
