The cotton pro duction of both East India and Egypt, bet tore the war, aa, comparatively, but trifling in extent. 1 luring the war, however, through the exertion made I ny both nations, . the animal crop of each greatly - im creased. An idea may be had of the extent of the exertions put lorlh in this direction bv both powers, when we state that, in "1865, the cotton yield ill Kgyt"WM one thousand per cent greater than before the war, and the East Indian yield nearly two thousand per cent greater. This result cannot be a subject ot marvel when we re flect upon the potent Influences brought to bear for uaavrconipliahment. The attentiou .ifjiven to the subject, and the patronage and protection lent by the Hritish Government; the Miwerlul private organization's and im mense capital invested ; the atremiou ef fort of tlie owners ofjthos then silent nulls all over England, upon whose sills the arras lairly grew ; the (illusion of British - skill, means, energy and enterprise into tardy India and undeveloped Egypt, ara. among the many coiubinatioua that were then made to improve to the uttermost the polden opportunity presented to oust the - United Btsteii from her control of the cotton markets of the world.while war compelled her alisence from them. How well they succeeded may be seen from the tact . that all the leading cotton-growing countries have for the last five years lar outstripped the United States, iu the supply of'ibe staple. In 1889 England importeij.rtie and ' quartet billion pounds, and consumed in that year, of this supply, over sine hundred and seveiity-sil million pound. Of this consumption, according' to reliable esti-, mate. fouffifth$ war' American cotton. ' la the following year this oonutry produced nearly five milium bales ; a sufficient qnan titv to have applied all the hvom of the world, wWi'out taonura to other nation. . la 1863 EnglVnd imported nearly two mil lion sle trom all sources, and ot this anp ply America furnished only one hundred and thirty two thousand bales, Brazil alKtnt the same quantity, East India over one and third million bales, and Egypt and other countries about two ; and three-quarter million bales. In 1860 the cotton production 61 tbia country was esti mated to be nearly ninety per cent of that of tbe whole world. In that year there was a large aurplus; with price ranging from tea to twelve cents a pound, in New York, for Middling, and from fourteen to fifteen: centa in Liverpool. ;. The average percentage Increase of eonsurnption ol cotton in Eu rope, for the ten years prior to 1800, was somewhat over six per cent. The increase 'for the single year-485 was eight and three-quarters percent; ftHf; 1859, nine and a half per eent, and for lartoytes and a quar ter per cent. , The average annual increase of consumption In this country from. 1850 to 1880 was about equal to that of Great Britain. ' These figures will serve to show tbe atatos of the cotton interest iust prior to the war, and ars certainly calculated to extend en couragement as to what we can do towards securing our old control of the markets, provided eput forth due exertion. There ieeiy leasuu to-believe that this country possesses insuperable advantages over all the cotton-groping countries. It is estimated that, even though cotton kept at lorty ceirla a pound for the present, Europe would take from us, probably, two million bales; and at twenty five cents, probably three million bales. This meana from three hundred to tio-ee hundred and twenty-millions of treas ure lor the ttooth. and all tbe plenty and prosperity that would follow in ita train. Under sucu a prosperous reign, ru incur ior- : tunes would soon be, Jbuilt, and war ban ished ..com torts would lie brought home again. It is, indeed, fortunate lor tbe Bouth ' t tat ahe holds the power ot so easily and s i rapidly retrieving ber Immense losses. In lea favored regions, repair of such vast disaster a hers could be attained only by long and severe labor and trial. But blessed as she is by munificent Nature, she has but to plant and behold her crops brought to pertectionj with one-totirth of the labor re quired elsewhere. And of those crops, one - constitutes the moat important item of com merce among "nations; tbe general market lor, which she can permanently command if sue but wills it so. That she may will it so, Is the earnest desire of all, and il of great importance to the commerce and manufac ture of this country. We have had account ol exhaustion ot cotton producing land in some parts of.. the !utluv.-lt co,jv,ftrceJy he believed Mist this exist to any serious de gree."
