What cptcially distitiguishea this section Irom all other mountain regions that I have aeen, is the general fertility of its aoil. This is true, hot only with refbrene ' to its valleys, hut also of it mountains. Their side and even top are generally covered with a thick Vegetable mould, on which the largest trees and grasses grow luxuri antly. At an elevation of five thousand feet above the ocean, the grasses and weeds are so rank as to remind one of the swampy j lands of the lower regions. On the lops, and for a considerable distance down the side of the higher chains, there are several 'varieties of evergreen or "winter urnss," as they are generally called there. Then are so nutritious that cattle ar kept in good condition on them all tho-whiter. A friend of mine be ore the war kept four nr five hundred horned xattle on one oi these mountains, and with theexception that they were supplied with salt occasionally, they subsisted entirely both in summer and win ter on those grasses. The older cattle, he assured me, soon learned to understand the effect of tho . seasons, and without being driven, they led the herds, ie the spring, down the sides of the mountains to obtain the young grassefl that came np with the warm -weather, and, when these were h trotj by the autumn frrtSts, they returned ' to the tops to get the evergreetregetation, and fouud shelter under .the Spreading branches of the balsam fir trees in stormy weather. I have seen in Haywood County a -fiveyears otd fi.n.Tatnt was naT fieen foiled arid reared entirely on ihe top of Balaam Mountain, ami was then for the first tihio brouzht down to see cultivated land and eat food crown by the hand of man. Those portions of the mountain that are without timber arc, of course, covered by the thickest toata oi grass. The balsam trees which cover for So great an extent the Great Smoky, JJalsam, and Black JJoun tains, eould le easily gotten rid ot at a cost of hoT more than a conplo of dollars per It is m sou as to be easily cut, ami it fulled and suffered to lie a few months, it leave would l.ieconm quite dry, and it might be burned with the greatest lacility When thus destroyed", it would, not ipnug p,again but in fta stend a very thick sward of everureen craw.
