I adopted tirii marry in the belief that
the services I had rendered the Government,
scertitted by Judge Holt, the Hon. Mr.
Diddle, and Mr. Asuley, would, in your
view and judgment, render ma deserving
' Executive clemency, and became I desired
that it should appear on the record, and on
the fat ot my pardon, that clemency had
' been extended to me solely In Consideration
ol my services to the Government, and ex
clusivplf on the recommendation of proml
Bent Radicals, to the end that when I should
come to eipoa tbe atrocious plot ol Ash
ley St. Co., the Radicals would not be in a
position or able to charge ma with doing ao
; in consideration of a pardon, or that the
President had pardoned me on condition of
my implicating his enemies in au infamous
conspiracy. . . t..
From the moment I was forced into as
sociation with tlieae traitors and conspira-
' tors, I determined, as soon as I should lie
released, to place iu the hands of your Eg-
' cellency, or lay before; the public, a com
plcte exposure of their diabolical designs
and most astounding proceedings. This, I
believed, would be my sacred duty, for al
though accused of crime, I am not so des
titute ot honor and patriotism aa not to feel
some interest in and obligations to my coun

In order that thaw ntifrht us iyim mm an in.

- My wile ha, I believe, explained lo you
how Ashley, flrat through his man Friday

to make known tojiie bis wishes, aima and

shall, therefore, only advert tiers to some
things which have bees (aid and done by
the conspirators, which are susceptible of
being proved against tbemjyr tbe most ir
refragable evideoce. "
After dbtaining my promise to render all
the assistance in my power, Mr. Ashley ex
pluined to me thai kind of evidence he
t lougbt it most adrieable to present against
vou.' (I must be veiy brief.)' He thought
it would be very plausible to prove ;
, 1st. That Booth had on several occasions
paid you familiar visits at the Kirkwood.
This, it was hoped, I might be thle to .in
duce some of the old female servants to tes
tify to. If this could not be done, then it
should be proved by some ot my friends
who happened to be fit the bouse at the
time, who knew Booth, etc,, and saw the
visits.
2d. That you forrusponded with booth,
which sft'tu'ld beahowa by one or more per
sons who bad taken notes from Booth to
you, and your replies (contents unknown)
t lereta to Booth.Tha- wit neaaea should Jj
p -raona who profess, to have been Intimate
with Booth, and to have been enliated by
, bitn to take part in tbe assassination.
Bd. That the placing of Atierodt with
weapons at the Kirkwood was only a abam
although Atzerodt was not aware ot. it
to make it appear that you were intended
i a victim, and thus distract all suspicion
f ora yon of conniving at Lincoln's murder.
This also, it was suggested, could be proved
b periions who could testify that tbiy had
, b a induced to enter into the conspiracy
w.th Booth, and bad performed a part : in
organizing it, Ac. ; which persdnsit was to
be understood, were induced to testily under
an assurance from the Government that they
'inuld not be prosecuted for any part' they
bad taken. ' j - ' ;
Tha resolution under which Butler'a com
mittee was appointed, It will be observed,
provides for the protection of such persona
wnoare furnished with a giod excuse for
not coming fiwward Wore by offering im
m unity to all who were connected with -the
conspiracy, who will bow come forward
a id disclose their knowledge on the subject.
4th. That Booth, jtut after tha 4th of
March, stated to intimate mend in New
..York,-whom be endeavored to enlut, in the
couspiracyy that brwaa acting with the
knowledge ol the Viue President ; that it
bad been arranged to kill Lincoln on the

I have learned h'th fniiu Ashley and tha
Carties uiemseives wnat w as said and done
f and between them in tbe matter. The
atatcments they were desired to make Were
revised and corrected by Mr. Ashley, and
thry were assured by him that in - case it
should be determined to examine tbem be
fore tha committee they aliould be "splen
didly rewarded."
Ashley also discoursed to fhem on the
propriety and justness of the course it was
proposed to pursue to make certain of the
impeachment of the Pieeident. He de-
clared that you wrre traitor to your party
and country, vc., xc, ; that there, was no
doubt of your complicity in the assassina
tion conspiracy, butrtlilt the evidence was
in the banda of your friends, and could not
all be got at j that enough, however, had
been secured to satisfy most reasonable men
of his guilt, but that, in order to satisfy tbe
most exacting, the statements of these per
sons before the committee would tie requi
site : that the end fully Justified the meana,'
and that every man wiio contributed in this
way to the iuipeacbment of the President
would deserve well ol the country, and that
be (Ashley) would see tbem rewarded ten
fold when your successor aliould come, into
power.
Subsequently, the. parties were presented
to Duller, anil, alter ln-ng inspected and
passed by hiiu, were Introduced by him and
J,'ley toseverel Kadieal members of the
House, who, it was understood, bad hitherto
doubled the existence of evidence linplleat-

who iulormally interrogated tliem aa lo the
matters upon which they had been instruc

Butler desired id have taken the U iiod-
tiHii of these men at .tlie time, but I would
not content to its being done until I should
be released, aa at first agreed.
These tacts cau lie proved lv tliine three
persons, and also my wife, whose character
r truth and veracity ia not lmerior to Mr.
Ashley's ; aud I btdl take pleasure, if at
liberty, io producing them before any com
