THE SEMINEL JOBIAH TURNER, Editor. MONDAY. DECEMBER 28, 1874. FORCED CONaTMUIION. W rejoice that ererj dtj bring to our knowledge tbe certaiotj tbit lucre wi oo b an end to toil forced CsnbjCon ititutiuo. We call it a forced Conttitu tioo, and it it nothing else. Everything connected w it b reconstruction was foice tad violence. Thtd. Stevens, the father of reconttructioo awiti it wtt outtide of the Constitution. Reconttructton in Itt origin, in itt urotecution end continuance wat force. It produced forced election end forced Constitution. To lb it dee- pot Urn tad tyranny tbe people could ol fer no remittance, because they ltngitiibed for petce after a four year uniucceatful war agtintt blch the; , voted in 1861 Tbe; tubmitted tranquilly but not cor dially to forced Constitution, put upon them by a forced election, in which the balbtt were counted out aud compared in another State before military uiurpir ol tbe State authority, and no man prer ent to represent tbe Mate. Ri fltctiona on the origin and adoption of tbi Conttitu tion can intpire nothing but odium, coot tempt and abhorrence for the men who originated and framed it. The C'JDtlitutlon wtt not intended for tbe people of North Caro'ita, bat Tor tbe tyrtnU, opprettort and military despots whom tbe people abhorred. Nothing could be more palpably absurd and con tradictory than tbe Conttitution put for ward by the military usurpation of the Federal Government. A longer obedi erne to such a forced Conttitution would be ditbonortble, and exhibit ut to poster ity in tbe light of a people who bad lost all manly sentiment. Ttie disease politic is in the Conttitution, and nothing can cure it but a Cjcvention. We are aware that brindla tails, moderation and soften ing policy men will tee iu such sentiments another rebellion. We bad no more agency in making tbe late war, rebellion, or revolution, or whatever you may call it, than we had in forcing reconstruction. ' We have had jutt at little agency in ia- tablisbing tbe moderation, softening po! icy of Holden, Rodman and Retde and those wbo sought office under the bribery and crimes of Littltfield, Dewcese & C. This . moderation and softening policy meant nothing but association with Lit tl9eld tt Co , and an endorsement of their political vicet, briberies, and the wbele tendency of which was to debauch the people to their crimes and principles. The people can remember tbe Conventiou and those wbo forced it on them only with abhorrence. The remembrance of which mutt be obliterated by one vene rable in their eyet tod rlenr to their heartt a FOUND ma HORSE. On the fith day of Ootobor laat m Uu bay mare was stolen from Mr. A. O.Jones, one of tbe county commissioners. Tbe mare was hitched in the yard of Tearby and Rogers of this city. Mr. Jones tracked bis mare to Cameron's red mill on Eno in Orange. Tbe .thief stayed all night at the house of Mr. W. II. Shaw, and stole bia bridle next morning. A week ago Mr. Oreen Bagwell informed Mr. Jones that a rogue in' jail at Ilillt boro' could give him information about his ttolen " hwe. Without delay Mr. Jones sought ohn Smith in llillsboro' jail, who informed him that he had seen bit mare in Danville, and she had been aod to one Thomas a colored ht! keeper at Franklin courthouse in Roanoke coun ty, Virginia. Mr Joues went to Dmville, but learned nothing of the misting horse. From there he weut to Lynchburg, and took the East Tennessee and Kirginia Road to Big Lick, iu Roanoke county, where he hired a horse and rode to Rocky Mount, the county seat of Fratk lin, where be found his mare in tbe pos session of Mr. Mmifee, a merchant n ho had bought him of Thomas Howell. When Mr. Jones described Shaw't bridle on the mare as Shaw had dest n bed it to him, Howell rail "My Oml, abe it gone up; that's t he bridle she hud on when the come here." Howell pave $40 and a gold watch for the man . Mr. Jones gives a good see mat o the country and the penp'e, and mentions especially one N. C Covprr, who wis kind and obliging and bought a tudciie fr liuu to ride home ns lie was abort of I iuJ. The recovery of hit home cost Dim $75. If John Smith in j iilatlHIc boro' was not the man, he knows as much about it as the thief himself. At the close of the revolution, horse alealing was so common as to retard the agricultural prosperity and advancement of the country, and it could not be stop ped nntil a law was pasted mak-ng it a capital felony, and many ineu were hanged. "Billy Terry drove" as tbe (Scotch used to oil William Berry Orove, the member of Congress ', from Cumber land, once tracked bis stolen horse into South Carolina where he captured tbe tbe thief and horse an! brought bim back to Fayetteviile all alone where he was tried and executed. IV' e do not like to bang for horse stealing, 'but something must be done to stop it. ': COMMUNIS If. Tuit term baa a different aignificstion from what belongs to it in Europe. C m monistic Societies in the United States, re inch as Shakers and Mormons wbo have and own everything In common and for the common good. Charles Nordhoff baa recently written a book upon Com munistic Societies in tbe United BtaUs. 1 his book shows tbe Shakers industrious, .frugal and neat, living together in peace and harmony. The name commune and communist in Europe is odienr. Tbit Odium arises from tbe fact that tbej have attempted to control labor by law or got- erntannt, and have produced strikes, mobs, bloodshed and destruction of property. Tbe Moravians of' Salem were a people wbo bad everything or most things in common at one time. Tncy did not make love, curt and mirry at the young people of that industrious town do to day. Tbey would dr w or cast lots for wives, iiu old gentleman of B.ilem onc e tod us of his diawing three times for n wile, he did not drew hit Sweetheart either time, to dipir.i'g of the fatet doing justice he and hit tweet heart walked out of town and got ma ried, which brought great scandle upon the. Society. lie got a good wife, not Withstanding the sesr.dil biought upon tlie Society and the toolish custom of the dsy. There are d- ubt ts good wives to : found in IUIe g tnd llillsboro, but we should say that Salem ceuld produce more good wivet than any six to, ics.pl its tin in tbe whole r-'outbera country We say tbit bicause most of the girls bave some knowledge of tbe little house' bold accomplishments which enables beusekeeper to feel at ease when the cook has kit the kitchen at 11 o'clock without notice, and gone to the next neighbor who has offered her a dollar more in the month. OBITUARY. Die 1 in this city the day after Christ mas, John It. Harrison, in the 00th year of hit age. The deceased was born Wake couutj, June 23d, 1808. Houei'y of purpose, strength of will and strong common sense were the characteristics of tbe deceased. Ho was true as a Iriend generous and forgiviug as an enemy. .Ill he wanted to have made the leading man in the age in which he-lived, w as early educatior. He was emphatically a work ins in in, but took time to read and was well iufonnid in matters of politics, re ligiou and history, lis died in lull hspes of that better worl i to couie. The death of such is man deserves more extended notice than is here giver, and we trust that some friend v bo knew the deceased more intimately than we did, will give the public something of bia life and character. ALL OVER Another Christmas has come ami gone, and we doubt It the readers of tbe en- tinel got all we wished them. Well, it was no fault of ours. We wished roast rurkey, peace on earth and good wili to men, and we nieint it.
