He passed down the road to his home yesterday, the very picture of health ( and, this morning at 7 o'clock, with scarcely a moment's warning, died under aa apo plectic stroke. Major Grice was born in Portsmouth ia l82v His early educa tionwas received at Elisabeth City, ia our state ; one of bia preceptors being Edwin M. Stanton, afterwsrd Lincoln's secretary, of war. He was four years mayor of Portsmouth, and once repre sented Princess Anne and Norfolk coun ties in the Yirginia senate. : He served In the Confederate army through the war, and at its dose was chief quarter master of the department of Georgia Alabama and Florida. Uewss President of the Union Car Works at Portsmouth, and furnished the equipment for what was then known ss the Wilmington, Char lotte k Rutherford railroad now the Carolina Central. In 1CG7, he found ed the National Bank" of Ports mouth, of which he remained president, until the 29th of last September, when he resigned to accept the presidency of the Raleigh A Gaston and Augusta Air line railroads. At the time of his elec tion to this position, he was president of six different corporations. He was in Portsmouth arranging to move his fam ily to Raleigh, when he died. Although he had been among ns so short a time, he bad made many warm and sincere friends ; and bis sudden death has spread a general feeling of sorrow through all our community. The sympathies of our people go out to his bereaved family, his widowed wife and orphaned children. May the God of the afflicted bind op their wounded hearts, and ena ble them to feel that "all is well" with him who has only "gone before. " " MMMMM.
