CUBIOU.H DESCRrPTlON' OfrX RUS
SIAN RELIGIOUS SECT.
; German travelers Dr. lUuJa and
Seiven, have publisliod nn account of
their Jortrney in the Caucasus last Jear,
in which, there is a curious description
of a Russian sect called tbe Dnchobory,
or Champions of the Spirit This sect
was on m led in the middle of ithe last
century by a dwhargod aoldier iu the
government of Kharkolf. In 1768 the
Dnchobory openly announced to the
authorities at Tamboff that they would
not iu future -make ns of any churches,
sacred pietaroa, or religious forms or
symbols of any kind whatever, but only
pray to the in visible God. As this sent
B3t only aimed at the deetmetioi of the
htite church, but threatened to cause
serious disturbances among the people,
its members had to suffer much prosecu
tion nnder- the government of tha Em
press Catherine ; and they were so badly
treated by the members of ths orthodox
faith that they emigrated in a body to
the government of Tsnria, where they
were permitted by the Emperor Alexan
der 1, to settle iu a district of Malotch
naja. Here the Daolioboty became
very prosperous ; and nnder a ukase of
the year 1816, which publicly recognised
their blameless life, tbey were allowed
to remain unmolested till 1840, when tbe
Luiprror Nicholas ordered them to be
sAiit into Transcaucasia. t Tbey are bow
living in eight settlements on the Turk
ish frontier. They have no clinrcues,
preachers, Or forms of prayer, , Tbey do
uut make the sign of the cross, and their
onl v hymns are a series of . proverbs,
which are transmitted Terbally.frpm
generation to generation. , Their prayer-
'tinn take place in a private house.
