becomes alarming. A letter .from
Sligo of May 18, says, " We cannot
accoinmodjate the sick for want of
bedding and food. The type of the
fever is- at present more malignant
than in .May 1817; it runs out with-
out remissions, frequently to 27 ,or
even 30 days, and there leaves the
surviwr idiotic for weeks. ,Uur situa-
at ion is truly deplorable our people
unemployed our manuaclures ex
tinguished, and bur trade annihilated.
The result is, incapability in the peo
ple to purchase provisions at any
price. The fields are untilled, and-
even flaxseed, cheap as it has been,
met with few purchasers. The fail
ure of the flax crop last year fias been
an additioual cause of the poor man's
calamities."
