A good story is told by the Baltimore' Re publican, about a stout athletic, lump of a cha, who during the last war, enlisted on board one of our men of Avar, as an able bodied seaman. The fellow was duly enter ed on the ship's book and was soon at sea. the' first rough weather that came, he was ordered alolt, with the usual accompaniment of'4 hurry ,"but he didn't happen to be in a particular hurry at that particular time. He looked aft, shrugged his shoulders, and coollv answered the order of the officer by saying " Mister, I shan't go up, thar l" Not go up, you rascal?" "No, sir; I'm d d if I'm going up thar to have my head broke with them conflutemcnls that's knock in and-svvingin' about, at least until every thins: i qtfiet." " Why you lubberly 8Couudr4 didn't you ship for an able bodied seamawrf" I did, and 1 am an uble-hodied seaman !' "You are, arc you; tell me what youfneau by saying you are an nble-bodieK seaman," said the'officer in a rage. "VVliy, I mean," says Bob,'" I can whip any man on board !' . t IP f . This was too much lor t ne omccr, ami too good' to keen, lie related it to the captain, and the way th recruiting officer was quiz zed during the cruise, was fun all round. Cob however became an able-bodied seaman, in fact ; and proved it by whipping the whole ship's crew at Martinique. THE MOTHER OF NAPOLEON. The family of Napoleon, says Alison, though noble, had not been distinguished,! had suffered severely from misfortune. The mother of the great captain,, who was marked by "real beaut v, and no common firmness and intrepidity of mind, shared in the fatigues and dangers of her husband, at a period of great trial, and was engaged with him in some ex peditiojps on horseback. His father died at the age of 38 but the want of parental care was more than supplied by the mother to i - i . 1 ... The modern fashion, adopted by our belle, of wearing bustles, is not so new as many persons imagine. Ia the reign of James I, the fashion-of ladies wearing verd inhales, in ordtr td make themselves appear lo have en ormously large hips, appears to have reached its height; and about tfj sn:rm period the men adopted the plan of stuffing their ttttnk hose for the "same purpose, - A writer of that day describes these stuffed trunk huso as a sort of verdingale breeches.' This ridiculous cus tom occasionally led the wearers into awk ward predicaments. On one occasion it is related that a young man, so dressed and dis tended withhran while in conversation with some ladies unfortunately tore his hqac with a nail and alt Hie bran escaped, leaving iiiin so much reduced in size as fo be scarcely recog nisable. At onetime a law '"was passed, pro hibiting the men from wearing their breeches stuffed with bran; rtnda man having been ta ken before justice on suspicion of infring ing; this law, established hjs innocence by drawing fori h the stuffing, which consisted of a pair of sheet, two Uhlej cloths, ten nap kin?, four shuts, a brush, a comb, night-caps, and some other minor articles. The' ladies. who wcrg the first to set the fashion 'm this way, were "not ft ivhit behind the gentlemen in thesize to which thcydisleiubd themselves; but vvhttbcT the gentlemen of the present day will have the gallantry to follow the fashion of the ladies, and adopt bustle breeches, yet re mains to be seen.
