force the State's indemnity against loss on account
of her suretyship for the Raleigh and Gaston Rail
Road Company," ratified the 16th day of January,
1847, the first section whereof is as follows, to-wit :
Be it enacted, -e. That it shall be the duty of
' the Public Treasurer, as soon as may be practicable,
4 after the passage of this Act, to give notice by pub-'
4 lie advertisement in two Newspapers, printed in the
4 City of Raleigh, for the space of one mouth, that
4 the Real and Personal Estate of the, ELaleigh and
4 Gaston Rail Road Company, has proved insufficient
4 to discharge the debts of said "Company, in which
the State of North Carolina was surety, by reason I
ot wnicn, large sums nave oeen paia,- ana remain
4 to be paid, ty the Stat, on account of said sarety
4 ship : And to require all persons who are bound for
4 the State's indemnity in the premises, either as
4 Stockholders tinder the 14th section ofthe Act of

THE year will be divided into two Sessions of five
months each ; the first Session beginning on tbe first
of January ,and the second Session, on the first of
July.
It is the design of the Preceptor, that this Institu
tion shall not be surpassed, in the advantages afforded
for acquiring a thorough English, Classical and
Mathematical Education.
Pupils will be prepared to enter the Junior Class of
any College in the United States.
TERMS OF TUITION.
For English and Mathematical Studies,
per Session, $15 00
For Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and
Italian Languages, per Session, 20 00
The advanced Classes may pursue the Studies of
a lower Class, paying only for the Studies of the
Class to which they belong.
Military Tactics taught to the Pupils, free ef extra
charge.
The design of the Military Department being to fit
the Pupils to act, in case of emergency, rs Officers,
the West Point system of instruction will be carefully
pursued, nr will the Army Tactics be dejiarted
from, in order to exhibit the boys for the benefit of
the Institution, or for any other purposes.
By an Act of the last Legislature, the necessary
arms and equipments will be furnished by the State,
hut Parents who wish their children instructed in the
Military Department, will be required to provide them

Parents and Guardians, are reqnested not to allow
their Children or Wards to have accounts in the City,
but to deposit the money, for the purchase of neces
saries, in the hands of the Principal.
N. B. A few Pupils will be taken as Boarders, by

jAj. Orarige:;County, N. C. during last summer, a
Negro Man named Ephraim. Eprhaim is forty
years old, five feet eight or nine inches high, stout
and square built, and very muscular ; bit ancles are
large aud feet thick; his forehead low, with (it: is
believed) a smalf scar ou it ; cheek bones somewhat
high, neck thick and short ; his hands are large, with
perhaps some remains of a sixth finger on each hand,
which he had when young ; he has a dowu look, is
an artful feilow and a pretty good mechanic. Twenty-five
dollars will be paid for his apprehension iu the
State, or Fifty dollars if taken out of it. All expen
ses will be paid for his delivery to either of the sub
