J frel safe in sayjng this'Council is one, and the whole liquor business- and all who are intercsttd 'therein, the other; anl a mighty foe they are. Tnm proud I am engaged in this fight, and I f el confi 'fc'nt, if we will ever ke p inscribed on our banner in li tters of gold, 'tin, motto I have so' often , looked upon n hi n a school-boy, u Pel severando Mimi'a vinces," we will came" out more than conquerors. We hear of hard hard times, and wluii we h ok abound ns, is not the cause plain enoug'i ? No doubt a great many of you have read the account of the amount annually ex jended in the United States for that ' which is cursing this bright and beau tiful land. Just think of it ! eight hun lred million ! one third ot the whole nation's indebtedness.. Eight hundred million times '-worse than being squan dered away.' It is also stated that one hundred thousand annually fiH the drunkard's grave, a sad picture indeed. , Wc have not to look over th broad ex panse of this vast Republic to see the lire 1 -Heels of intemperance.' ' Beneath- our feet at this very hour, aud widiin the sound of our voices as we sing the songs of lemperance, the very air is polluted with gin, ruin, brandy and whikev. - . 1 In looking over the records of tlie ."'Revenue Office of this District, Ii find nearly one hundred and .fifty persons who are engaged in this, the devil's le gitimate work. The Government has 400 for the privilege of letting , men distill the poisonous curse. 1 wisli it was a thousand; then 2 per day and 50 cents a gallon or the liquors ; then the dealer pays twenty-five or a hun dred dollars, as the case may be, for dealing it out to the untortunate and deludexi victims of intemperance, and at the bottom of everv glass he drinks n five cent stamp blurred well mixed perhaps, with strychnine jbesides all the per cent, commission, rents,' leak age and free drinks, as has. heretofore been alluded to. Now, my brothers, you mav think this a fancy sketch, , but it is the whole truth, aud the real cause of hard times. Let us now look at these facts in the light of revealed truth. The entering wedge to this or ganization is the belief 14 in the exis tence ot a God," and a " reverence for the teaching of the Holy Scriptures," and we find therein language which cannot be mistaken on this point. ' Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine and men 01 strength '"to mingle strong drink, which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him. Woe unto them that rise early in the .morning, that they may follow strong drink: that continue 'until night, till wine inflame them !"
