The days gr w longer; the returning sun
Shines down n warmer rays upon the earth
Still mantle , in her robes of fleecy white,
Which dons - gairish hue as melting winds
In lingering illiance with the locks
Of graybeart vinter, sinking to his rest, ' : e
Tone down * $ sternness with a softening sight
To-day the ur is soft and filled with balm
That tells of spring time in the sunny South;
To-morrow aR the sky is blanched with clouds,
And rent wit! furious winds and biting blasts—
Fit emblems f a reigning power who sees
His empire suvely pasting fiom his grasp,
So warlike Mf> regretful, yields his sway
To April, ligJ capricious, welcome still.

JUDGE GR> EN—THE CRIMINAL COURY.
Messrs. Editors :—The Criminal Court for
Craven county met in the new Court room to-;
day; and the ( and Jury having been duly em-
pannelled, wa - ddressed by Judge Green in a
learned and a^e charge. He impressed in forc
ible language ipon the Grand Jury, the necessi
ty of a fearless, searching and faithful discharge
of the duties committed to their hands. He urged
upon them the great importance of so acting as
to win the plar*iits of the virtuous and the wise,
and to despise he scoffs and jeers oi the vicious
and the vi e.
The charge throughout was characterized by
a spirit of bold bnservatism really refreshing, in
these degeneral. times. We bespeak for the new
Judge, a kind ■ eption at the hands of a just
public, assured that, if properly sustained, he
will make a useful, faithful and efficient officer,
and will render she Court over which he presides
what it was des cried to be, a great conservator of
peace and public order. We have no doubt that
“the Criminal Ccartof Craven County" will prove
ofgreat benefit to this community, in that, it
will not only m^e out impartial justice
but that in an economical point of view
save a vast amount in dollars and cents
county because the law will be speedily
to all,

CbaVen County Criminal Court.—This tribu
nal assembled in the Court-house yesterday, and
after the empanneling of the Jury, Judge Green
proceeded to deliver a most forcible, fearless,
and complete charge; which so far as we could
learn, gave entire satisfaction to the audience
and Bar. The Court then adjourned until this
morning. We invite special attention to the
communication on this subject signed “H.”
Stenography.—Prof. Maguire, of Virginia, is
now in our city, and will open a school for in
structing in the art of short hand writing, this
morning, in the Stevenson office, (lately occu-
pied^by Manly &Haughton); where he proposes
to give entire satisfaction to all who may desire
to learn the branch.
We have taken one lesson, and Lave no hesita
tion in saying Prof. Maguire, is qualified to
teach the art he professes. He comes well re
commended irom prominent gentlemen in Vir
ginia, and many well known public men of onr
State.
M. J. McNamara.—“The City Exchange” is a
quiet, orderly place where you can get Wines,
Ales, Liquors, and Oysters, &c., &c. Go and see
or yourself. McNamara will show yen about.
Sale of Land.—The auction sale of Dover
Swamp land (905 acres) by our neighbors Walk
er, Farrar & Co., yesterday, resulted in the dis
posal of the lot at an average of three dollars per
acre.
The Races.—We are informed that the back
ers of the Onslow Pony agreed to pay forfeit; and
in consequence the race between “I. 0,” and
“Deciever” did not come off yesterday.
The running race between “Wild Kentucky”
and “Flora Temple” for $1,000 was decided in
favor oi the former, Fastest time made—2.45.
Gen. Sickles Order.—See noon dispatches.
Arrived.—The schooner Mail, to Whitford,
Dill & Co.
Felicitations.—We take this occasion to con
gratulate our readers upon the evidence of fail-
weather once more. We think the forty days
and n ghts are now about up, and the waters will
probably begin to subside. Persons engaged in
the construction of arks would do well to examine
the clouds before working further.
To Copy Manuscripts.
The following method for obtaining copies of
manuscript papers will be of great service to
those who wish to preserve copies of what they
write: Put a little sugar in common writing ink,
and with this write on common paper, sized as
usual. When a copy is required, take some un
sized paper and moisten it lightly with a sponge
and apply the wet paper to the writing, and
pass lightly over the unsized paper a moderately
heated iron, and the copy is immediately repro
duced.

Mr. B., we understand, went in pursuit of the
rascal, though we have not learned with what
success.
As he may endeavor to continue his operations
in other section, we give below an exact descrip
tion of the swindler, and trust it may be the
means of detecting him, should he make his ap
pearance, elsewhere, under any of the numerous
aliases he has at command :
Six feet one inch in height, tall, slim and un
gainly, beardless face, very talkative, disposed to
stoop slightly in the shoulders, slow and delib
erate in his movements, very thick lips, scar on
the left side of his forehead, sanctimonious in
his professions, apparently about 22 or 23 years
of age, and especially fond of ladies society.
Watch out for him.-— Tarboro' Southerner.
Continued.
Owing to the absence of a material witness on
the part of the defence, the case of Jno. Taylor
and Jim Knight, charged with murder, was con
tinued until the 3d Monday in May next, when
a Term of Oyer and Terminer will be called for
its disposal.
It is a matter of regret that they could not be
tried during the present term. The blood of the
innocent victim cries aloud for speedy vengeance
upon the authors of this atrocious murder, and
if the parties so charged, are found guilty, the
sooner the majesty of the law is vindicated in
their persons, the better it will be for the safety
and security of the whole community.—Tarboro 2
Southerner.
Interesting Trial.
Wo had quite an interesting trial in our town
on Friday last. It appeared that an extreme
loyalist of Davie county had failed to pay his U.
S. license for the privilege of distilling, and had
also failed to pay the revenue on the quantity
distilled, and after due notification by the U. S.
Collector, his property was distrained and ad
vertised for sale. On the day appointed for sale,
the Deputy Collector was informed by the crowd
who had collected that the property should not
be sold or removed from the premises. As most
of the crowd were armed and drinking, the offi
cer thought it prudent to desist. Some of the
crowd were arrested and brought here for trial,
and were bound over to appear at the next term
of the Federal Court. It is a great pity that all
the defendants were “Heroes of America,” as it
spoils a nice sensation story of outrage, that
would have been duly chronicled by the Standard
and other papers of that ilk, as evidence of the
rebellious spirit of District No. 2. — Winston Sen
tinel.

We have understood that there was a meeting
of the “Heroes of America” at the Court House
on last Friday night. We understood from a
freedman on Thursday that the meeting was to
be held, and that he was going to join the order.
We had some curiosity to see if this “man and
brother” was as well posted as he pretended to
be. When the night came round we strolled up
in the vicinity of the Court House, and sure
enough it was lighted up and other evidences of
a conclave ot some kind going on. This is the
first meeting of the kind we have heard of in our
town— Winston Sentinel.

changes of weather should have them, as they
can be carried in the pocket and taken as occa
